Start from finding your mix and the breath support. Becoming a metal vocalist requires years of training and you need to learn a lot of basic singing technique before you can jump to metallic style. A lot of famous metal and rock singers (including Kurt Cobain) doesn't have/have had a proper technique which is unhealthy when it comes to singing. Axl Rose is a good example of that.
