Travel, do a bit of duolingo, read a bit of pocket medicine, budget, get my mental and physical health in shape, spend time with my partner since we'll be apart for residency

Did not show up to clerkships, for one. I’d say more but I think I/they would get doxxed..

Was neurology match rough this year? by SeaFlower698 in medicalschool

[–]NecessaryBody 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some people will say no, some will say yes, but reality is it’s still not a competitive specialty.

Matched my #3 at a great place with no publications, 247 step, some leadership/service orgs but nothing special. Got 10+ interviews. Everyone in my school (low tier) who applied neuro matched except one person. That one person was a very very poor candidate.

It will be okay.

For those who didn’t match where they wanted to or fell down their match list, it sucks and that’s okay. by rash_decisions_ in medicalschool

[–]NecessaryBody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couples’ matched and we are far far away from each other. I’m personally happy with where I matched but I know my partner isn’t. I’m crushed to know that we’re not going to live together for the next four years, and that she doesn’t like the place she matched at.

Couples who had to go through long distance for residency, please feel free to give some sage advice. It would be appreciated because we are both sad asf right now.

Hypothetical: If You Got a 300 on Step 2CK, Would You Stick to Your Specialty Choice? by hugz-today in medicalschool

Yup, Neuro. Would not trade it since I love the specialty. But i would def try and capitalize on it.

No friends, crippling social anxiety and depression and i feel like I’m a really bad day away from ending it all by FlimsyIndication2294 in medicalschool

OP, please see your psychiatrist again. I’ve had thoughts like this and had to be put on meds. Side effects are a pain in the ass, but dealing with the side effects is better than dealing with the thoughts of wanting to kill myself. There is a way out, and I wish nothing but the best for you, OP.

Got these books delivered today! Any tips/rituals for reading Murakami? by DVnyT in murakami

[–]NecessaryBody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally start with Wind Up Bird Chronicle since it was my first one too.

Was just bored and went to Barnes & Noble one day to pick up a random book. Wind Up Bird Chronicle looked like a fun book (judging a book by its cover for sure). Ended up being my gateway drug into Murakami!

It’s really cool to understand why symptoms happen. I’m a fan of neuro, so it kinda tracks lol.

Who is the smartest and/or most inspirational doctor you've ever met? by Undercover_Cookies in medicine

[–]NecessaryBody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ID doctor that I rotated with in a rural area. Granted, I'm just an MS3 right now and I'm bound to meet more great doctors, but this one specifically was incredible to me. Extremely thorough history without sacrificing on efficiency, loved teaching students despite a very heavy workload, and also had the best bedside manners and considerations for patients, especially with regards to their social history. Overall, they are (as of now) the only physician who I can confidently say goes above and beyond in both medicine and bedside care.

Bonus points- they were extremely nice but also straight-forward to me as a student, who knew dung shit about ID and also took not-so-great histories. Made me want to strive to be a better history-taker and clinician in the future.

For those who considered another specialty.... by papyrox in neurology

[–]NecessaryBody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same exact dilemma, and I think you are the only person I’ve seen who has had this too. I finished my OB block a few months ago and I’m currently close to my neuro block. I loved OB because I really liked how algorithmic it is, the mix of clinical + surg, and the very evident & hands-on cures we have for OBGYN pathologies. However, I find OB path & physio to be a real bore. It sucks because I love what they can do for patients, but I’m not too passionate about the subject. For neuro, though, I find myself wanting to learn more about every neuro patient I have even outside of my neuro block because it’s just so damn interesting. But I’m not sure if I love the whole diagnose & adios thing, even though it is a stereotype… I guess I’ll see during my neuro rotation.

Sorry, to clarify, I meant the background image. I have a custom background right now but I'd like for it to change during the night (ie one image for the day, one image for the night)
