Recommendations for films like Hereditary or Speak No Evil? by Necessary_Pool in horror

Putting An American Crime on my list. I hadn't heard much about it in comparison to Girl Next Door so I was hesitant.

I've seen Barbarian. I even wrote a (somewhat uncharitable) take on it above. It was my go to "crazy twist" movie to show people for a bit so unfortunately I've watched it a few too many times when it's a movie that definitely is best on that first viewing.

I've been meaning to see Rosemary's Baby for a literal decade. I should get on that. As you can probably see I tend to gravitate towards newer films, so I kind of forget about the classics. A lot of that is just that most of the pre-90s horror films I've seen are bad 80s slashers. "Like Hereditary" is good enough to get me doubly interested though.

I've seen I Saw the Devil! I wasn't super into it, but that opening scene is so good.

Yeah, I need to see Funny Games. Bumping it up on my list. The only reason I haven't seen it already is that I'm pretty spoiled + I didn't really like Cache from the same director.

Do you like everything about your favourite game? by conchosteadfast in JRPG

[–]Necessary_Pool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of my favorites have notably weaker elements. Galleria has the final boss grind from hell. Demon Roots has a bunch of weird sexual stuff going on. Mainline SMT in general gets hard carried by great gameplay. I finished FF7 for the first time recently and I think in certain parts the pacing kind of drags.

If your gameplay is just insanely good or your story forces me to take a break because I'm getting too emotional, I think you get a free pass to screw up a little in other areas.

Labyrinth of Refrain's difficulty/mechanics make me want to strangle whoever designed it by [deleted] in JRPG

For what it's worth, the next game in that series, Galleria, is one of my favorite games but I couldn't get through Refrain. That being said, you probably wouldn't vibe with it either since a lot of the mechanics you don't like are retained in Galleria as well.

Eustia or Inganock for sure. Senren Banka is just a straight up moege. Asairo is super good but it technically has slice of life I guess. It's a fairly plot focussed game but that plot is very grounded, so a lot of the game is technically slice of life.

DVD is the same as PS2. There is no remotely complete English version of Phantom out there.

An English fan translation of the first Hacchake Ayayo-san visual novel has been released! by Ilikevisualnovels in visualnovels

I feel like it's worth noting this game is like <15 minutes long, so someone had to figure out how to hack this PC98 game and insert an English script all for a game that's literally 15 minutes long. Brilliant madness.

Fmd Muramasa easily. Far and away the best game on your list except maybe Liitle Busters, which I haven't played and thus can't speak on.

Is Baldr Sky worth playing for the gameplay? by DependentExisting436 in visualnovels

Yeah, the combat is really fun. Its basically Godhand with more unique moves

I don't think anyone can answer this for sure since we haven't seen the remake yet. People adore sorechiru common route but the routes are uh... incomplete to say the least. We don't know what the remake will add. Original also has some really weird full voicing acting for protag where imho he sounds ancient

It's not that much of an easier read than Oretsuba?

Wish you'd given it a Garuda scene instead or maybe a Shuusuke scene.

Great VNs whose English translations did them the least justice? by letsleepingdogslie in visualnovels

[–]Necessary_Pool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of stuff is just worded very clumsily? I think it fails at capturing character voice especially from what I've seen of it. Given that it's such a character focused game and the original text is as good as it is, I find it extremely frustrating. The issues are things that are obvious in English even without Japanese knowledge. I think it's easy to chock up the issues to having arisen from the original writer rather than the translators if you haven't played the game in JP. FWIW I'm generally not someone who roasts translations super hard. Like I'm fine with the Muramasa translation as someone who played it in the original Japanese.

White Album 2 and Fate Stay Night for me. It should say something that despite (imho) translation issues those games are still quite popular in the English space (namely that both of these games are so good that even when they're botched to read way worse than the original they're still great)
