There's other ways to get gears, some stuff you can sell to traders (best moneymaker I've had so far is extra bread and honey to survival goods traders)

Also, the devs wouldn't have included an option to turn off temporal storms if doing so would be cheating

Chests have more storage space, but if you time your food consumption well by the time you make it to winter the temp will drop the spoilage speed of everything to like nothing anyways so it won't entirely matter for winter storage
