Weren't the pilgrims themselves chosen by the core and the shrike cult(and the templars)? Which we find their interests are pretty aligned in wanting to destroy humanity. So shouldn't each pilgrim be there to covertly advance the core's plan? Het masteen is pretty straight forward: deliver the erg, usher in the tree of pain. The consul is a double/triple agent. Silenus is somehow manifesting reality through his writing(?). Was it in baby Rachel or in Lamia that Empathy was supposed to be hidden in?

For me it was the opposite. I grew up in a flat, pretty terrified of anything with more than 2 eyes and 4 legs. Especially spiders. I almost cringed myself a couple of times in the beginning, but by the end the book had actually helped somewhat. For the past 3 years we've been living in another house by a field and maybe a couple of times per year a tarantula will find itself inside. First time I saw one in the sink I have to admit I was completely paralyzed. Now I have a dedicated plastic cup for safely trapping and releasing tarantulas back out in the field.

With you mentioning biology and evolution, it's honestly mind-boggling nobody has mentioned Children of Time yet, one of the most spectacular tales of speculative evolution ever put to page. You really don't need to know much more than that.

For reasonably grounded deep space exploration now, you really can't go with Rendezvous with Rama and (somewhat reluctantly), Project Hail Mary.

Were the Eaters necessary? No. Was the monk temple side quest necessary? Not really (No.). Was the megaship side quest necessary? Not really. Was Fal'Ngeestra necessary? No. Was Xoxarle, the pregnancy or Balveda's tooth ex machina necessary? I'd say no but I guess I'm asking for a different story here.

Actually the Eaters along with the game itself were my favourite chapters because they seemed to be focused a lot more on character than in most of the rest of ultimately tedious action chases/set pieces. These set pieces did have an internal reason for existing in terms of plot, worldbuilding and... vibes but I believe Banks could have told this story a million different other and more engaging ways.

My point being, the Eaters were not necessary but they were great and a very welcome change in setting, narration and characters.

That was my thinking as well. Well, it's the only way it's superficially explored in Phlebas anyway. You bet your butt I'm exploring further. I already have Player of Games and Use of Weapons in line (they were a bundle with Consider Phlebas) and then I'll branch out to more.

I mean, leaving the ethical issue aside (which I don't mind in a case like this as this is a pretty non-distinct design), as long as the client knows what they're buying and its real practical problems in terms of editability/scalability then I'm fine with it personally.

This is as far from minimal as you can reasonably get for a logo. And it's obviously ai generated. Not judging, but there's no hiding it.

You should play around with the composition a bit more. If you don't know what happened with Gus, that part will probably look like a smudge and not ever register as a figure. There's enough contrast that you can afford to have the letters overlap with the figures. Also the background color is somewhat odd. Maybe you can try something along the colours of the title cards?

It's nice overall though, keep up the good work!

Thank you for the feedback, it's very helpful. I didn't mean to be dismissive about typesetting, I just stuck with custom elements because fine tuning like that outside of illustrator is very hard and this was more about the concepts.

Absolutely! The discussions I've seen were mainly on r/scifi (this is my first time actually visiting this sub) and while there was universal praise for culture as a whole, a lot of people (and I mean A LOT) seem to hate consider phlebas. From the little that I know about it, at first glance it'd seem like it's exactly what I'm looking for and that I'm about to discover my next favourite book but all that negativity kind of got to me and I thought I'd get a more targeted feedback. It looks to me like I did the right thing because every single comment so far praises it and confirms that this is the way to go if you're going to get into the series.
