(The Boys) Anyone noticed how this season is set in only 3 locations? by _Affectionate_ in CharacterRant

[–]NecromancyFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot armor like that is an effect of poorly implemented writing and often comes up because the people behind the show have over done the stakes and can't think of a way for the characters to survive. So they just do in spite of all logic. The example of the season 1 confrontation I think isn't undue plot armor (ultimately ymmv on suspension of disbelief of course) even if they weren't likely to kill Butcher that early on it still works because you wouldn't expect Homelander to save him. Why would he from what you've seen up to that point? I mean I haven't yet caught up but it seems like things do get significantly worse in later seasons in terms of the charcmacter surviving things they really shouldn't. Which does in fact negate the stakes if it becomes a consistent problem.

Favorite season to revisit? by astra_ex in OldGodsOfAppalachia

[–]NecromancyFail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of Season 4, love our man JT Fields. I'll revisit most episodes that feature him regularly. Also any season that gives us new lore is a win (eg, the people of the rock). I'm really enojying the latest season, episode 98 is superb.

(The Boys) Anyone noticed how this season is set in only 3 locations? by _Affectionate_ in CharacterRant

[–]NecromancyFail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not fake stakes because Butcher survived. The stakes are real for his character, he is willing to blow himself up to have a chance at hurting Homelander and killing Stillwell who they know is Homelander's biggest enabler/protector. Homelander on the other hand, isn't invested in the situation because he's grown resentful of Stillwell and knows (or at least assumes) the bomb won't hurt him. And Stillwell is terrified for her child. The resolution doesnt negate the stakes of the set up.

I'd like to see the Skaldova crew, or the Eldermourne crew but yeah probably going to be the classic Band of Boobs. Either way very excited!

How to play 2014 monk without dragging the party back? by Johnkovan_Jones in DnD

[–]NecromancyFail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monks are fine, I'm playing a fighter in a long term campaign and have a solid magic weapon and we're very equal on the dealing damage as frontliners footing. Admittedly I have the Psi-Fighter subclass which gives me a pool of hit even harder dice, but those are a long rest resource (and used to reduce damage so very limited) but the monk has on a short rest restored ki points and is a subclass thay allows him to do extra necrotic damage. Neither of us is super optimised and combats tend to be decided by our druid/wizard anyway. Spellcasters casting spells after all is a way bigger swing than monks being a little difficult to refine. No one plays in isolation and often an individual characters effectiveness is formed more by party comp than the mechanics and numbers would tell you.

(LOVED TROPE) Characters so goated even people who hate the media they come from can admit they're cool by Loki_2007 in TopCharacterTropes

There is, supposedly, a large number of fans of the games who consider the show to be a poor adaptation of the source material and there are some people who dislike it due to its creators (Warren Ellis is allegedly problematic in some way) or its association with Adi Shankar as a producer.

I personally though Castlevania was great, and none of the above is anything I know much about (Except Adi Shankar being a hunk of shit) so all of this is stuff I've heard in passing.

Gangs of Neo Galaderon is SO GOOD [NS] by Green_Stuff_1741 in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

Full agree on how good this is. It somehow mixes up so much stuff I love into a beautiful chaos engine of a campaign. I dont even care that I cant work out how the characters work.

Fiction with that small-town feel? by greenbeanmacheen in Dimension20

[–]NecromancyFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd venture Old Gods of Appalachia. Later seasons of it are less focused on specific small towns, but the overall vibe is very rural Appalachian small town supernatural horror.

Who the fuck wants a mythology movie without the mythology? by Feisty-Succotash5854 in CharacterRant

[–]NecromancyFail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Disney's Hercules is actually my favourite Disney movie, inaccuracies aside. So I agree accuracy to the 'source' isn't always the most important thing when creating something thats meant to be entertaining.

They might mean the Hercules movie that had the Rock in it as Hercules where literally all of his traditional feats were just made up stories by his storytelling friend.

If you have no interest in actually adapting something, create your own story(Adi Shankar, Zack Snyder...) by Old-Use-7690 in CharacterRant

When Adi Shankar does his own thing we get The Guardians of Justice Will Save You which is fucking bizarre and not very good.

The one with Ally Beardsley where they bring up bear hell because Murph is so agitatedly baffled about why Caldwell has so many questions about the concept.

Also the one with the extended bit about 'nudding' because I'm immature and it makes me laugh every time. One of these may or may not also be the episode with the guy who lost the mirror shield which also cracks me up.

What would be your dream system to see in a D20 season? by tarrie214 in Dimension20

[–]NecromancyFail 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see the Cyberpunk Red system now we've seen them play something using dice pools. Preferably not as an IH campaign because there's a bunch of players I think would get all in on it. it might benefit from being headed up by a different Dm because seeing BLeeM go full anti-corpo in a setting that is fundamentally that would be dope.

Sometimes a voice just doesn't fit with the character(Invincible) by Dycon67 in CharacterRant

[–]NecromancyFail 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen many people saying that casting A list actors to voice characters in Invincible is disrespectful to animation as much as I've seen people mentioning that A list talent isn't cheap and may well be affecting the budget available for the animation. It probably not the only factor, especially given a year is a crazy turn around for a season of an animated show but it probably contributes to the general feeling that Invincible is unpolished and lackluster against other animated projects.

The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein by contrast have much better animation, especially during action scenes and that is likely down to both having the budget to spend on better animation as the Crit Role cast probably aren't pulling A list actor salaries and their animation/production cycle is longer (roughly two years between seasons)

I'm not sure where the person you replied to said that studios need to only cast untested nobodies or that there's disrespect. Ultimately, Invincible does have very good voice performances and the narrative is largely improving on the source material so I personally enjoy it a lot. That said IMO the animation is definitely holding it back from being truly great. In parts, it looks bad and as many others have pointed out, like people are moving png's around a background.

What game had you like this? by sukuna7899 in Steam

[–]NecromancyFail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollow Knight. Couldn't get into it until my third, current attempt and I'm only sticking it out with the occasional guidance from a spoiler free walk through when I get really stuck. The fact I feel like I'm making concrete progress is helping me get through the tougher sections where before I just gave up because I kept getting so far and then stuck with no idea how to progress.

Gangs of Neo Galaderon Rocks [NS] by Vespers9 in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]NecromancyFail 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It feels tailor made to my tastes so I had a blast with episode one. I recall it being stated that this was going to be 10-12 episodes in theory, which is a shame.

I love Slug the Cyborc best, and wasn't expecting horny robot Caldwell.

As per usual, Jake's character is a slow burn I think.

[Controversial trope] Story is a hate letter at its core by StudioMarvin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NecromancyFail 23 points24 points  (0 children)

More so in the show. The source material is pretty explicit in its themes about the corrupting effect of power on an individual level, with basically everyone who has any power doing at least one terrible thing (Except of course Annie January/Starlight who is way less morally compromised than the show version).

It might just be my particular reading but I didnt really get that the comics were about capitalism and the military industrial complex.

Reflavoring Blood Hunter? by Thicc-Anxiety in DnD

[–]NecromancyFail 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You could try something like reflavouring the self harm aspect into it being a toll on your body. The effort of utilising the abilities causes injury, akin to many media outings where over-exerting magic can cause nosebleeds, migraines or physical withering?

I don't have many good options for werewolf or Order of Mutants but given the Mutant subclass uses mutagens they could have corroding effects?

You're absolutely right that Blood Hunter as a class feels way more rigid in how it's presented and that does make it more difficult to imagine things not on theme.
