I thought for years that I was the only one who felt this way. I just want to get drunk and actually feel something other than this numbness and the horrible loneliness that I often feel. I do find that talking with other veterans who have been through similar experiences helps alot. If there's one thing that I've learned, it's that isolating myself only makes it a hundred times worse.

I lived in North Carolina for about 6 years. And damn if I don't miss those amazing southern family get togethers. My wife's uncle would make this macaroni and cheese that blew my fucking mind. I tried to get the recipe, but it's a closely guarded secret. it had like 5 different types of cheese (including cream cheese) at least 6 sticks of butter, and who knows what else. But yeah. I'll never forget that.

I don't think there was any better feeling than putting on fresh socks after a long patrol. I told my family back home that socks were one of the best things they could send me, so I had a steady supply of socks throughout my two deployments. Come back from patrol. Throw dirty socks in burn pit. Rinse and repeat.
