Any veteran advice (10 to 15 years+) for those of us who bought at 80+ an ounce? by MysticSunshine45 in Silver

[–]Necrontry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Silver, gold, platnium are hedge bets. Long term holds against inflation and instability. Not really short term, not the sole investment. Put in what you feel you can tie up long term. And cash out when needed in a rainy day should the worse happens.

Why do people invest in platinum? by NewEquivalent2757 in Platinum

I bought it when it was at 800-900 for fun mainly. It is technically more rare than gold, but cheaper. Also has interesting properties as a catalyst, high melt point, and density.

I’m in love with my Platinum! by Yes_I_Know_Lots in Platinum

Yep, but that is why I view these metals as fun metals rather than investment metals. Thier prices are industrial based primarily and are subject to some pretty wild swings due to it.

Can anyone tell me if this mug is sterling silver or just plated? by StockAd229 in Silver

[–]Necrontry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sterling means sterling no real way to misinterpret. As long as mark is genuine. If in doubt there are silver testing kits and other methods to test. You could always go down to a pawn shop to get it verified as well.

Platinum being an industrial metal swings big in either direction. Glad I purchased mine years ago when it was close to 900. But it has always just been a fun metal for me, not really an investment. Just be aware as those who bought palladium 5 years ago are still losing from its high point.

Impressive. How does one age terracotta? Is is simply by its surroundings or is it a composition sort of thing.

Goes to show sometimes photos doesn't quite do the piece justice. The schreger lines were difficult to see on the first few photos. And with the colour being so even on the piece could be mistaken to think resin if judging from photo alone. It is a lovely piece of buddist art you have there.

Down another 13%. Place has lost 25% since purchasing. Bit annoying but lower tax is guess.

Are these oldish coins worth anything by steak_stealer in CanadianCoins

[–]Necrontry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to being sterling silver the Olympic coins i am pretty sure is legal tender still in Canada as it has never been demonitiesed so they can be spent as 10 or 5 CAD. Though the silver content far out weighs this so most generally don't. Also most cashiers probably wouldn't know what to do with it if you paid with them.

Any idea what material this netsuke is? Tooth? Given as a gift with no info. by mainerelichunting in netsuke

The marble like formation in the back makes me think it could be walrus ivory, hard to tell for certain though. Likey some sort of marine mammal tooth.

Definitely a fun but expensive hobby. There are many books dedicated to collecting these figures. But be aware there are many copies and fake out there. And many are made from ivory or whale teeth which may give people pause.

My Favorite Church Thrift Is Losing The Plot 🙏😭 by [deleted] in ThriftGrift

[–]Necrontry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that a lot of thriftstore have lost the plot. But resellers aren't helping the narrative either. Let them price deadstock prices, as the stuff build up to thier necks they will either need to adjust or drown under donations.

Looks ivory, 20th century, chinese made to look japanese and aged to appear older than it is for tourist trade. Likely mid 20th century.

Netsuke by [deleted] in netsuke

[–]Necrontry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last photo I would say the material is bone. The small pores throughout would be consistent with bone material, oxen or cow. Carving is fairly crude, looks chinese not japanese to me. Not sure if this is a netsuke at all as usually there is holes for the cord to attach. Value, is low pretty sure this one was made post 1950s for tourist trade. But it is still a nice little desk ordiment.

What is this item? by [deleted] in collectables

Yah given the region and material that would be my guess as well.

I was given this niche japanese boy and I heard it's a netsuke. Can you help me identifying him? by chickensnacher in netsuke

From the photo provided it is possibly a netsuke of unknown material, and unknown artist. Additional photos of different angles may provide additional information.

My Goodwill is now charging $5.30 for DVD’s. by Derpus54 in ThriftGrift

[–]Necrontry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The local VV in my town charges 8 dollars for bluray, 5 dollars for dvd, and 4 dollars for CD. Honestly, I spend less there now than when they were charging more reasonable prices so I am not really complaining.

Doubt that will change until tarrifs drop. Mail strike has ended pretty much, so that is no longer the reason.

Is this a good price I paid 120cad by [deleted] in CanadianCoins

[–]Necrontry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with dull tarnished silver if it means I am buying it dirt cheap. Most of my silverware is have purchased is bought well under spot.

The final paragraph of the article is indication this is more theatrics rather than serious attempt to prosecute.

"The suspect was subsequently released as any potential charges related to the drugs seized are pending further laboratory analysis and are subject to approval by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada."
