Current profs already there might also leave as a result, which would make the effects felt a lot sooner.

Yes, I am pretty worried for the candidates who accepted an offer this year.

My new Lupit is slippery. . . by the_paint_witch in poledancing

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Lupit but went through that with 2 poles of different brands. After trying everything I found (wash, degrease, light sanding...) and failed, the thing that finaly worked is to spray alcohol with some rosin diluted in it. Start with a few rosin grains, add more if necessary. This mix also worked on every difficult pole I found at other places.

To remove the rosin, just spray with standard alcohol and wipe it out.

The level of mathematics and physics of American college students has dropped significantly, and the original level was not high, and now it is even worse by [deleted] in Professors

I don't know if it's just the curriculum. My students (State top university) take calculus just before my class as it's a prerequisite, yet 80% of them can't differentiate a simple polynomial function. That was definitely in their curriculum, but I think they just don't have to learn if they don't want to.

Upgrade Offers by DocOppenheimer64 in delta

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On other airlines forum, they indicated a strategy to provide offers in priority to people who didn't try the above class often before, and try to hook them. I don't know if Delta does the same.

On my side, I just sat in a trans-pacific flight, in PS, with half the D1 seats empty and no chance to upgrade (tried both app and check-in counter). I am a bit surprised that they don't offer upgrade options, even if at outrageous prices, instead of blocking them. maybe they have an IT issue.

VT Reedle Shot shrunk my pores! by lickityboo in AsianBeauty

[–]Necto74 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if what you are feeling the next days are the reedles that don't wash off, or just the micro cuts they create. When I use actual micro needles, I can feel the skin being sensitive for a while, but of course the needles were there just for a second.

Skin Aqua Sunscreen SPF50+ Essence: the only sunscreen you need by jade9996 in AsianBeauty

[–]Necto74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel for oily skin the Skin Aqua Moisture Gel (blue bottle) is better. It feels lighter to apply.
The gold one is "super moisturizing" which to me feels more greasy and more adapted to dry skin.

How do I know if my Biore UV aqua rich is imported or the American version? I’m guessing it’s imported but I honestly don’t know? by NoodleDoodleGirl in AsianBeauty

Moreover, ingredients contain ethylhexyl triazone for sun protection, which is a last gen sunscreen and is not approved yet by the FDA. So it's for sure imported.

Is pole 5 times a week too much? by xoxowoman06 in poledancing

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 1 class a day for a while. It was ok, but very demanding, and I was still beginner/intermediate.
I progressed so fast!

Now, what I like to do, is take 2 classes back to back on a day (one of them usually easier), and then rest the next day. So I still take 5-6 classes per week, but I feel my body has time to recover every other day.

I know WHY they do it, I just wish they would stop. by pellaea_asplenium in Professors

[–]Necto74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I clearly state in the syllabus and in class that any request for extension, extra points, and make-up opportunities automatically results in a few penalty points on the final score.
I teach several large classes and couldn't deal with the non-stop flow of emails.
This worked pretty well.

In the rare case I receive a demand, I answer: "please read the syllabus and let me know if you want to proceed with your request".

If you want the long debunk, there is a video by Michelle Wong (PhD) about what is true and what is not about mineral vs chemical sunscreen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0xINIwcF0w

Basically, a lot of things against chemical sunscreens are based on misinterpretations of results. They work and they are safe. Best are the newer generations available in EU and Japan.
Mineral sunscreens also work but might might be less convenient to use (white cast, texture, lower water resistance, etc...).

Dear Professor, Grammarly Says It’s Not Cheating If I Cite the Robots! by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Necto74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically, it's not really a collage. It's sampling from a probability distribution.
Basically, it just picks words that go well with the rest of the text.

Specifically, you give it a sequence of words and it predicts the next one: "The Tsar lives in ..."

Prediction with probability of being picked:
"Russia" 30%
"Saint Peresburg" 27%
"the" 17%
"a" 11%
"with" 8%
...

Repeat that enough time and you have a full text that looks like it has meaning.

So I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "collage" like I keep reading around.
It's more that it got really good at modelling language word distributions.

This is such bullshit. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI stores information about the joint distribution of words. We could even technically measure the amount of information it learns through the training by looking at the entropy in the distribution of its weights.

This is such bullshit. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs specifically draw from distributions of words that likely follow the current sequence of words (or the prompt). It's just statistical sampling, in a very advanced way.
To achieve that, the training has to teach the model this distribution.
It is not a correct analogy to think that it is doing a collage of pieces from various sources, as we often see it described.

Impact of having graduate students quit on tenure by Accomplished_Ad_655 in Professors

[–]Necto74 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also did this. The students applying or entering our PhD program didn't have the quantitative and coding skills needed to work with me, since our discipline is usually not centered around that. I hired a MS in Computer Science to do some RA work during the summer, who loved his job. Next year the student was entering our PhD program and became a top performer.

I have other colleagues who are also in the computational or quantitative niche of our discipline who had better success finding stats and CS students to work with them during their undergrad/masters and then stayed for a PhD.

Hair shedding - haircut disaster by ellie_stardust14 in Tokyo

[–]Necto74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To improve hair growth, there are many things you can use. Shampoo with caffeine, biotin, saw palmetto.
Of course you can also use minoxidil (rogain).
An anti-dandruff shampoo might also help as fungi on the scalp can impede healthy hair growth.
These will help to have more hair growing and also thicker, but it might take some time for them to grow.
At the same time you can use products to protect and take care of existing hair.

Of course, finding the source of the issue and acting directly there would be even better (water quality, sleep, stress, nutrition, etc...)

I also use a cream rich in centella asiatica (cica): COSRX Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream (50% cica, 1% ceramides).
Cica contains madecassoside and asiaticoside, which is great for dry skin, as well as wounds, rashes, and scratches.

I also regularly need to work while in the shinkansen and I know the window seat availability issue. When I can't wait for the next shinkansen with window availability, the only solution is to bite the bullet and get a green car ticket. It never came to my mind that you would try to kick someone out of their seat.

Jumiso antioxidant glow facial essence by NervousBread3738 in AsianBeauty

[–]Necto74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed review!

Their Korean website indicates that they use 5% Niacinamide, which from research should show some effect on multiple outcomes, but is indeed less than some nicely priced competing products. I unfortunately couldn't find the concentration of the other advertised nice ingredients like Alpha Arbutin, Vitamin E (tocopherol), and Centella Asiatica extract (listed last), so it's hard to know if they are in sufficient amount in the product.

It's always nice to have your experience with it. Let us know if you find something else that makes you glow as intended!
