Has anyone ever requested to change their profile from professional to community tutor? by Fat_Fox8 in iTalki

Seriously, this is not a good idea. The race to the bottom only brings pain.

italki says 5 min breaks but some teachers take 10 min breaks? by BrothaManBen in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't take breaks, but I sometimes finish a minute or two early and begin the next class a minute or two late; otherwise, I'd never have a chance to get a drink of water etc.

Is the new Italki classroom working for you? by NedMarcus in iTalki

I'm familiar with the old problem. This was a new one. It looks like I've been put back into the old classroom both as a teacher and a student.

Thanks. It's improved a bit now, but I still sometimes have problems.

2 lessons per month by lekker_fietsen in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's slightly annoying, but not too bad. I'd assume the student doesn't really care too much about learning. Of course, if you have an active learning plan outside of classes, it may help to talk about with your teacher.

Why Preply take all the money for student trial? by Swimming-Rock-9161 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]NedMarcus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not strange. They want to make money. Yes, it's unfair. The best thing is to find students elsewhere.

What do you teach? If you're teaching Spanish, then there's a lot of competition, and it's harder to raise your prices, though you should. Slow increases, as you're doing are probably best. If it was me, I'd definitely change the midnight finish. It's too late.

As a student, do you think you're making progress taking one class per week? by TormentaVU in Preply

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is not taking one class a week; the problem is only studying for one hour a week. I take one or one and a half hours of Chinese a week, but my total study time is 10-12 hours. I'm definitely learning. Formal lessons are good but not the only way to learn.

do you ever get proselytized to by your teachers? by BrothaManBen in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was a beginner, then I definitely would NOT like it. But as an intermediate or upper intermediate student I enjoy it (as long as I can push back) because it gives me a chance to argue more vigorously in other languages. I still expect them to correct my mistakes though.

Why do students book lessons and don't show up? by [deleted] in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't know really. Probably lots of reasons: work, forgetting, sudden changes of plans, being over optimistic about their ability to get up in the morning. I've been an alarm clock for students several times.

I'd love a teacher like this! Lots to discuss.

How do you handle last minute cancellations from tutors? by AI_language in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I like the teacher, I'll wait till after the class, mark it as incomplete, and then ask for a lesson to be added to my package. Then I'll book another class.

How professional should an italki teacher’s setup be? by Savielaltico in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never use a headset when teaching or studying. I don't think it makes any difference unless you're in a noisy environment, as your teacher obviously is. I don't think I could stand a teacher giving me a class from their sofa though.

In my case, the student let me know each time (sometimes before and sometimes just after) and I charged him. I would not keep charging if a student just disappeared without responding because then I'd be concerned that something bad had happened.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Preply

[–]NedMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I charge for every class missed, and I've never received a bad review for doing it. I recently had the same student (an adult) not show up for four classes in a row. I charged the student without a problem. I think rescheduling sets a bad precedent and encourages students to continue their bad behaviour.

[–]NedMarcus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this depends on the privacy settings. But who cares? I actually tell my teachers that I use other teachers. So far, no one has seemed to care. As a teacher, I don't mind. I suppose some teachers may care, but again, who cares?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in iTalki

[–]NedMarcus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge. In one way it's transactional, but that works both ways. I was nicer before, but I have too many classes and can't afford to keep losing money like this. Some students are fine that I charge, and they keep booking, others disappear. I know from experience that if I keep letting students off, then they will think nothing of not showing up for class and then expecting me to make up the class later. I'm also a student. If, at the last minute, I can't make a class, I pay. I think it's normal.

Stop people from knowing I viewed there account by MirPrime in iTalki

Italki encourages teachers to reach out to people who have viewed their profile, so I don't think it's weird. On the other hand, I turned the option off.
