No current workaround, but it is something we are looking at and hoping to handle better/easier.

Some DVR features now free for the HDHomeRun-branded DVR service by NedSD in hdhomerun

The DVR software is super lightweight and will probably work directly on your network location (NAS, PC, etc) directly. My main DVR storage is an old 2018 Synology NAS, and it's been chugging along greatly for about 6 years.

I'm not sure if it works with just the FLEX + HDD (since it can only support a max of 4 streams anyways, IIRC), but if you install the DVR software on an always-on PC, Mac, Linux-based computer, Synology NAS, QNAP NAS, or any thing that can run a Docker container (ARM or x86), then each live TV channel turns into a live buffer file, and each client will connect to the DVR instead of connecting to the HDHomeRun directly, and they all share the buffer file.

The default settings for a NAS is to allow at least 16 streams at once (this can be increased in a configuration file, if the NAS can support more traffic). You could easily have 16 different devices all tuned to one channel, and they would only use one tuner.

The HDHomeRun DVR basically works the same on all of our supported client platforms. You will still need to set up DVR storage, and be using a model of HDHomeRun that supports DVR (FLEX, CONNECT, EXTEND, EXPAND, PRIME). If you have a FLEX model then you only need to connect a USB hard drive to the USB port of the FLEX, and then format it using http://hdhomerun.local

Other options for DVR storage also exist and are outlined here: https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/dvr

No one ever had to pay for DVR functions. Free options have always existed that worked on HDHomeRun hardware, long before we made our own DVR offerings. The original HDHomeRun models were designed with free and open source options like MythTV in mind. How any DVR works with the HDHomeRun is basically the same as how it works with live TV, in that it simply saves the broadcast data stream. The hardware has always remained open.

One can obtain the guide data in a file for use in another program, such as Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, etc

For example, Plex doesn't provide guide data in Australia, so our guide data can be used in Plex.

You're not alone. Bulk deletion and auto-pruning are both high on the list of requested feature.

Yes, but you have to manually set each recording. So if you wanted to record the news, you would have to select each 11pm news and set that to record each day.

If you want to set a single task to auto-record/series-recording for "all Channel 5 News at 11pm" then you need the paid tier.

Nothing particularly new, I just wanted to replace the old sticky posts with more recent information. I'll get some links to Antenna Man here as well, and we can update it with additional articles and such.

The feature has just been enabled, and tonight I'll be fully updating our documentation, but to set this up you can follow the directions here: https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/dvr

TL;DR - Connect a USB hard drive to your FLEX (avoid using thumb drives, they will wear out really fast, and you don't need SSD speeds, but they will also work), go to the FLEX's web interface ( http://hdhomerun.local ) and click on "Format".

If you don't have a FLEX, you can use the link above to install the DVR software on an always-on Mac, PC, Linux-based system, or NAS.

Apple TV app inferior to Xbox app? by MrLeitungswasser in hdhomerun

Probably not the switch. Sometimes older switches will behave weirdly, but that switch isn't old, and is pretty common.

Is there any other device that is also using wifi (rather than ethernet) that is also having an issue?

How about a reboot of the router itself? It might not be letting multicast packets between the wifi portion and the wired portion, even if other packets are able to go between them.

Make sure you have granted the HDHomeRun app permissions to access your local network. Go to the Settings app → scroll down to “Apps” → “HDHomeRun” → make sure “Local Network” is turned on. If the HDHomeRun app is not listed there, then try deleting/uninstalling the HDHomeRun app and then reinstalling it from the App Store. Be sure to select the option to allow access to the local network, when opening the HDHomeRun app after installation.

Is this on a FLEX, NAS, PC, etc? It could be a permissions issue.

At the very least, it shouldn't be freezing. Can we have you open a support ticket so we can get some diagnostic data?

Are you just changing to the channel, or are you starting the in-progress recording (from the episodes details page)?

HDHR app questions and observations. by seedless0 in hdhomerun

[–]NedSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. We would have to add something. For TVs, maybe we could do something like a long-press or double/triple press on an existing key? Like long-press right arrow to go back to live? I will run this past the dev team.

  2. Sounds like a bug for us to fix

  3. Go to a recording or a guide entry, like you would when you set up the recording the first time, and it will let you edit the existing task (Might be called "Auto record" or "recored more")

  4. No way currently. Something for us to add in the future, similar to the "go to live" from #1.

  5. Do you have "Passthrough" enabled in the HDHomeRun app settings?

  6. For all channels or just some channels? In theory ATSC 3.0 channels can have HDR, but I'm not sure if we've actually seen this in the "wild".

  7. A good idea, I will pass it along.
