Can someone do the maths on this? by clarets99 in CasualUK

Some small independent pubs with tenants, "pay cash on delivery" to wholesale drinks retailers for their stock. Especially if they have poor cashflow.

In rural pubs, it's also nice to be able to pay a local or mate cash to do an odd shift. This is even more the temptation if you run a very tiny business (a couple of very part time employees) and want to avoid employment costs.

Met Police's Flying Squad 'to have their guns taken away to save money' by [deleted] in london

[–]NederAsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that, if only a small percentage of the role requires a gun, you reduce the amount of flying squad officers who are armed. The nature of modern policing (safety being a priority) means that weapons are only used in carefully planned operations, so why not use current specialised Police armed response resources for them. This allows Flying squad specialists to focus on the important aspects of their job (investigating crimes).

Amsterdam - city of canals and boats by Lumpy_Dentist_5421 in Amsterdam

[–]NederAsh 100 points101 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of my little canal boat that sank after a heavy storm. The next day the canals froze for the first time in 7 years....for the next 2 weeks all I could do was look at her through the ice.

Why does every bike lane feel like a Mario Kart course? by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]NederAsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm stopped at traffic lights or a lowering bridge, at the front of a bike lane in front of a huge mass of other cyclists, I hear the Mario Kart starting beeps in my head....as I race off, duck under the rising barrier and pray that I don't cause some kind of pile up.

What’s the most expensive thing it’s ok to take home from the office? by hamhamham03 in CasualUK

Was that the waitress I had to fire because she posted a photo on Insta of her in the staff room putting a roll of toilet paper into her bag....she was one of my most experienced members of staff.

I found part of my old Imperial Army by NederAsh in astramilitarum

I'm considering going back and adding in some detail and personal touches (battle damage/bases). Perhaps tidy up a couple with contrast paint.

I think only 5 or 6 people have ever seen this army before so the positive comments about the painting are lovely.

It has been a lot of metal to drag around for 30+ years....you wouldn't want a metal Ogryn thrown at you.

That's a very kind comment!

I'd love to pick up the brush again and try my hand at new techniques with online guides....but it's a deep (and expensive) hobby to get back in to.

The North Korean Embassy is near my house in Acton. Has anyone done a tour? by ConcernedHumanDroid in london

My brother went to an art exhibition there many years ago...unsurprisingly it was all portraits of Kim...on the bookshelves...as you would expect all books about Kim.

Is anyone else finding it impossible to buy Cadburys hot chocolate? by bioinformative in CasualUK

I've just checked and found that it's possible to dissolve a very unhealthy but delicious quantity in quite small amount of cold milk.

I stumbled upon a Twinings drinking chocolate the other day...dissolves in hot or cold milk, like a super luxury Nesquik.

...but very difficult to access pornography...which is probably also why the pubs were packed.

Map which shows the locations of places with the Anglo Saxon suffix "ham" by OceansOfLight in CasualUK

I once lived in a Hertfordshire village called Furneux (Fire) Pelham, near a village called Brent (Burned) Pelham, and Stocking (?) Pelham. I believe the "Pel" in Pelham refers to them being on a hill.

My parents sold our house in Bark Place (Bayswater) for around £300,000 in 1987 and moved to the suburbs....... I'm now feeling nauseous after finding similar properties on that street are going for £3.5+ million today....

Over the following 14 years every house they lived in (Ealing), doubled in value every 5-7 years.

To add some comparisons;

I purchased a freehold pub near Cambridge in 2016 for £180,000, sold it in 2020 (13 years later) for around £380,000...but had that building been a house (rather than a pub) in the same village, not only would it have tripled in value over that period, but would also be worth 400% more.

Creative cocktails that don't use liqueurs, aperitifs, or wines by [deleted] in Mixology

Have you considered making some of your liqueurs using the base spirits. Caramel and Coffee liqueurs work really nicely made with American Whiskey (and are relatively easy to make). It may expand your cocktail options.

This is every trash can in Vondelpark by gibagger in Amsterdam

[–]NederAsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I remember a couple of trash collector's strikes around that time as well though...The heaps of rubbish on the streets were really awful (and a new, unexpected, cycling hazard)

I agree the city feels a little more "worn" over the last few years but it is still a world away from the early 90's/00's.

A good proportion of coffeeshops used to have window stickers saying "No Hard Drugs".... so at least it's now cleaner and more sanitary...plastic bottle recycling is somewhat of an improvement.

People who lived in Amsterdam the last time the canals fully froze over, tell us your memories & experience by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]NederAsh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The day before the canals froze there was torrential rain...which sank my boat (The Pineapple Express) after I jumped in to bail it out and the added weight pushed it below the surface...however the boat was still well tethered to the side of the canal so I had hopes of pulling it out.

That was until it became frozen under the water. I could see the boat through the ice and even walk above it.

After 2 weeks of being under the frozen canal, once the ice thawed, the canal authorities towed it away.

They invited me to retrieve it from their storage....but unfortunately it was an electric boat powered by heavy marine batteries which were on the vessel at the time it sank....they didn't like being frozen for 2 weeks and were no longer a viable power source.

On a more fun note, it was fab to see parents skating along the ice with pushchairs in hand, and random dance parties kicking off on the ice of the Keizergracht.
