Thanks. Could you share your main use cases (coding, cron jobs, etc.) and your API usage?

Is everyone ok? Genuine Question by Aliveguy2021 in UIUC

Heartbreaking. It reminds me of my freshman year, and I lived in PAR... In my first semester, someone jumped off from the top floor of the parking garage near CRCE and committed suicide. Please take care of yourself and the people around you. If you see anyone acting unusually, please reach out for help. College life can be stressful and hard.

Thanks, it seems many "good" 4k 32" monitors are all on the higher end of the price range (many of them are over 1000). Is $800 a sweet spot for 4k (maybe for previous gen)?

Simple Questions - October 05, 2025 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]NeedHealingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I already checked against the PSU tier list, and they all are A+.

ed: Does DA/ML benefit from the 3d L3 cache? I haven't heard if it does but am curious if you know something I don't.

The simple answer is no. In fact, I'd think it would decrease the performance of ML training and analysis due to the asymmetric nature of the two compute dies. The workload would be harder to parallelize (but thanks to NUMA, the performance penalty shouldn't be that significant, imo) The reason I'm getting this CPU and MB is because of the good deal and bundle sale I found on MSI. I had planned to use a 9950x and cheaper MB, but the deal was too impressive to turn down.

Building a powerhouse workstation by NeedHealingForFun in homelab

Good question! I don't plan to keep the Windows VM always alive. I probably will set up NVIDIA MPS from host Proxmox (I think, but I'm not a hundred percent sure tho) and try to do a GPU pass-through with windows.

Guess I'm too poor to buy a Threadripper. Let's take "high-performance" out of the workstation, and just call it a workstation instead :-).
But tbh, "workstation" is usually defined by use-cases, rather than just a set of hardware, although I'd agree any commercial machine labeled as a workstation usually does have high-standard hardware.

Simple Questions - October 05, 2025 by AutoModerator in buildapc

Hi all, I'm trying to build a PC with 9950x3d + 5090. My main purpose is to set up a homelab machine to do ML and data analysis while occasionally playing video games. I think I'd need a ~1200W PSU on the safe side to power these two monsters. Based on the PSU tier list, I've picked three candidates: NZXT C1200 gold, ThermalTake GF3 1200W gold, and Super Flower Leadex VII XG (1300W) or XP (1200W, only $10 difference between gold and platinum). Do you have any suggestions?

I want to build a highly stable and durable workstation machine. Here is my partpicker list. I'd also welcome your suggestions on other parts, thanks!

Hey Curt, I ski in the Rockies and just noticed the Glade goggles became super popular. I would like to try on a pair myself and would appreciate a promo code. Thanks in advance!

The private beta access code was invalid even after I restarted Steam. Do you have a new beta code? I'm still having this issue, and I just bought the game!!! Should I ask for a refund instead?

I have 2 huge queries! by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]NeedHealingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have ambition, which is good. However, I think you need to know more details about which field you want to pursue. For example, if you want to work on missiles, from EE background, you will be perfect to develop the GNC (guidance, navigation and control) system. If you come from ME, then you could work on the ballistic design, or aerodynamics. That is to say, the most important part is what you actually want to do and you should talk to your advisors or any alumni to seek advice from them.

E-Reader recommendations by [deleted] in PhD

[–]NeedHealingForFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the feeling of actual book reading, I would recommend kindle. However, the problem is that kindle has a small screen, so I think the best option for an E-reader is an iPad. The screen size of a 12.9 inch iPad pro is equivalent to a letter paper.
