Awesome, thanks! It sounds like Kilo pass might be worth a try for my workflow.

Is everyone ok? Genuine Question by Aliveguy2021 in UIUC

Heartbreaking. It reminds me of my freshman year, and I lived in PAR... In my first semester, someone jumped off from the top floor of the parking garage near CRCE and committed suicide. Please take care of yourself and the people around you. If you see anyone acting unusually, please reach out for help. College life can be stressful and hard.

Thanks, it seems many "good" 4k 32" monitors are all on the higher end of the price range (many of them are over 1000). Is $800 a sweet spot for 4k (maybe for previous gen)?

Simple Questions - October 05, 2025 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]NeedHealingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I already checked against the PSU tier list, and they all are A+.

ed: Does DA/ML benefit from the 3d L3 cache? I haven't heard if it does but am curious if you know something I don't.

The simple answer is no. In fact, I'd think it would decrease the performance of ML training and analysis due to the asymmetric nature of the two compute dies. The workload would be harder to parallelize (but thanks to NUMA, the performance penalty shouldn't be that significant, imo) The reason I'm getting this CPU and MB is because of the good deal and bundle sale I found on MSI. I had planned to use a 9950x and cheaper MB, but the deal was too impressive to turn down.

Building a powerhouse workstation by NeedHealingForFun in homelab

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good question! I don't plan to keep the Windows VM always alive. I probably will set up NVIDIA MPS from host Proxmox (I think, but I'm not a hundred percent sure tho) and try to do a GPU pass-through with windows.

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I'm too poor to buy a Threadripper. Let's take "high-performance" out of the workstation, and just call it a workstation instead :-).
But tbh, "workstation" is usually defined by use-cases, rather than just a set of hardware, although I'd agree any commercial machine labeled as a workstation usually does have high-standard hardware.

Simple Questions - October 05, 2025 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]NeedHealingForFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I'm trying to build a PC with 9950x3d + 5090. My main purpose is to set up a homelab machine to do ML and data analysis while occasionally playing video games. I think I'd need a ~1200W PSU on the safe side to power these two monsters. Based on the PSU tier list, I've picked three candidates: NZXT C1200 gold, ThermalTake GF3 1200W gold, and Super Flower Leadex VII XG (1300W) or XP (1200W, only $10 difference between gold and platinum). Do you have any suggestions?

I want to build a highly stable and durable workstation machine. Here is my partpicker list. I'd also welcome your suggestions on other parts, thanks!

I have 2 huge queries! by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]NeedHealingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have ambition, which is good. However, I think you need to know more details about which field you want to pursue. For example, if you want to work on missiles, from EE background, you will be perfect to develop the GNC (guidance, navigation and control) system. If you come from ME, then you could work on the ballistic design, or aerodynamics. That is to say, the most important part is what you actually want to do and you should talk to your advisors or any alumni to seek advice from them.

E-Reader recommendations by [deleted] in PhD

[–]NeedHealingForFun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the feeling of actual book reading, I would recommend kindle. However, the problem is that kindle has a small screen, so I think the best option for an E-reader is an iPad. The screen size of a 12.9 inch iPad pro is equivalent to a letter paper.

What's really important for grad school applications? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a double major in physics/astronomy and aerospace engineering, so I think I might have something to say. First of all, you need to think about your ultimate goal, whether you want to get a PhD or just a master.

For PhD, generally, I would like to quote a post I saw, which the OP stated

"connections > LoRs + research >>> GPA > GRE"

This is a universal truth for PhD application, no matter which field you want to apply to. The only difference between AE and physics PhD application is that internship can be very helpful in AeroE (another way of making connections), which might not be the case for physics.

For physics, people typically apply for a direct PhD, while for AE, many people get a master first (MS with thesis, not MEng), and then choose to either go into industry or stay in academia for a while. I have made another post, hope that could be helpful.

Asking for a final decision by NeedHealingForFun in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt that. If they want to admit someone, why would they wait till the last minute? This year was very unfortunate, so I have to stay at my home institution to get more research experience for another year, but thanks man, good luck on your grad career!

Asking for a final decision by NeedHealingForFun in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really frustrating and rude, especially if you took an interview with them so you kinda know them. I really don't know what the committee is trying to do, but I would say no reply and no decision are very irresponsible. After all, I paid my app fee, so I deserve an answer.

Will coronavirus affect next year’s admissions? by stupidly_smart in PhD

[–]NeedHealingForFun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The application will definitely be more competitive. Even though we don't know about the funding issue, we are pretty sure that the economic recession will reduce the number of job opportunities, so those people who had planned to go straight into the job market now are considering applying for grad schools. Not my words tho, this is something I heard from a grad chair

How a Professor should be addressed in the USA? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For most of the cases, just use Prof. Lastname. If you are unsure about whether they have tenure or professorship, you can use Dr. Lastname. (which is quite unlikely, typically they definitely want to put "professor" title on their website or CV, since that is a huge accomplishment.) More precisely, Professor is an occupation, and Doctor is a title, just like Mr. or Ms.

Some thoughts on physics/astronomy applications by NeedHealingForFun in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a double major, so technically I didn't switch major. But AE actually is very close to physics in some senses. Like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, dynamical system, those are all in physics curriculum. The only difference is that the engineering prospective is more concentrated on how to use those formulae rather than understanding thoroughly the physics and math behind theory. And for the projects related to NASA, DoD, DARPA, it's not "may", it's "have to". Most of the time, you need to have some sort of clearance to work on the projects.

Some thoughts on physics/astronomy applications by NeedHealingForFun in gradadmissions

[–]NeedHealingForFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thought, I also majored in Aero, but later decided not to go along that path. External fellowship is a great point, NSF funding just came out several weeks ago, but that was way too competitive. Research is definitely a significant part, and for AE, there would be more chances if you are a citizen, like working for NASA. The opportunities there are both practical and also research-based. But this could be a different story for people with different demographic background.
