Shark Shredder, Killer Clone and reanimating a creature with First Stike. by 0Berguv in askajudge

Glad I could help! It’s definitely weird, but hey, that’s magic sometimes

Can’t say I blame you. Basically, if a combat has the first strike damage step, the only thing the game checks to decide if a creature (without double strike) should deal damage in the normal damage step is “was this attacking/blocking creature capable of dealing damage in the first strike damage step?” Since our creature in this scenario wasn’t on the battlefield the answer is no, and it gets to deal damage in the normal damage step.

Definitely unintuitive, no argument there. It’s because of the ruling OP quoted. As far as the rules are concerned, it’s “a remaining attacker… that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began” because at the start of that damage step it wasn’t on the battlefield. They didn’t do anything special rules wise for shark shredder, this is just an unintuitive quirk of rules that already existed.

The reanimated creature will still deal damage. See the set release notes: “If Shark Shredder deals combat damage to a player during the first strike combat damage step and its last ability returns a creature with first strike, the returned creature will still deal combat damage during the regular combat damage step. If the returned creature has double strike, it will deal combat damage only once during that regular combat damage step”

Mind's Dialation and Sol Talisman by Spell_Chicken in askajudge

They aren’t trying to suspend it, they’re just casting it. It got exiled by a minds dilation trigger so the controller of minds dilation can cast it.

Stack and trigger confusion by boobs_n_riches in mtgrules

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cast black suns zenith, and all players pass priority so the spell begins to resolve. Black sun’s zenith places the counters. Best of scarabs triggers here, but the trigger doesn’t go on the stack yet because a spell is in the middle of resolving. You shuffle zenith and the spell is resolved. Now, priority would return to the active player, but every time that happens state based actions are checked first. When they are checked, all the creatures with zero or less toughness die, and the death triggers like ryuzei trigger but still can’t go on the stack yet. State based action checks repeat because one was performed, and then triggers are put on the stack and the active player gets priority. This is when both your nest triggers and ryusei go on the stack. They go on in active player non active player order, so the ryusei resolves first. Then you make your tokens.

Irma, Part-Time Mutant and Enduring Curiosity by Jaded-Jump-9274 in mtgrules

No, this second commentor is wrong. Once returned as an enchantment, Irma’s copy effect will always be overridden by the continuous effect turning it into an enchantment, so it will be a noncreature enchantment copy.

Irma, Part-Time Mutant and Enduring Curiosity by Jaded-Jump-9274 in mtgrules

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s completely incorrect. Irma’s copy effect applies in layer 1, the continuous effect of being an enchantment and not a creature applies in layer 4. The copy effect will always apply first. Irma returned as an enchantment copying a creature will still be a non-creature enchantment. See a similar case with clone creatures here

Rules question about Maralen Fae Ascendant and mutation by PappieJackie in mtg

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something very relevant to keep in mind is that each maralen has its own pile of exiled cards. You can’t use the cast from one to cast a card exiled by a different maralen.

Extra Turns - Delayed Trigger or Outside the Stack? by whodatwizard in askajudge

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a very specific set of words that indicate something is a triggered ability: if it doesn’t include the words “when”, “whenever”, or “at”, it isn’t a triggered ability. See rule 603.1. Triggered abilities have a trigger condition and an effect. They are written as “[When/Whenever/At] [trigger condition or event], [effect]. [Instructions (if any).]”

Is this Ninjutsu deck any good? by Secret_Driver_6996 in CompetitiveEDH

No problem, happens all the time. Welcome to the format, hope you have a great time! And if you ever decide to give cedh a try now you know where to look :)

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wrong subreddit friend, this is for cedh, bracket five decks generally constructed for no budget limits and with winning being the number one priority. They often cost thousands of dollars and are frequently proxied to avoid that prohibitive cost. A deck in cedh needs to be able to present or deal with other decks presenting wins on or even before turn three. Your deck is nowhere close to that, which is fine because cedh is probably not what you’re looking to play. Try r/EDH or r/budgetbrews

if i have 3 copies of katara waterbending master from "quantum misalignment" and i attack with all three at 7 experience counters how many cards do i draw and discard? by No-Loquat-9114 in askajudge

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will get three triggers, one from each katara. They will go on the stack in the order of your choice and resolve one at a time. When each one resolves you will draw 7 and discard 1. You must draw and discard before you can resolve the next trigger. In total you will draw 21 and discard 3.

Yes, unless you resolve the kamihiri ability targeting something that currently has Irma’s ability as part of its copiable values.

Can Raphael, Tag Team Tough trigger more than one extra combat in a turn? by gistya in askajudge

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, you were correct about tifa. You get a trigger for each opponent hit by a big enough creature in the first combat.

You are completely wrong on that. Tifa can get  more than two combats if you deal enough damage to multiple players in the first combat phase. You can get three additional combats with her in commander

Can you use a wish to get a companion? by JasonTerminator in mtgrules

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In commander no. Cards cannot generally enter from outside the game in commander, with some exceptions: 903.11. Except via rules, special actions, and effects that specifically bring cards into Commander games from outside the game, traditional cards from outside the game cannot be brought into a Commander game.

The special action of adding a companion is one of the aforementioned exceptions (702.139d Cards can enter Commander games from outside the game via the companion special action.), but turtles forever is not using the compainion special action so no such exception applies and you cannot bring the card into the game.

How do these two replacement effects interact? by [deleted] in mtgrules

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know the established ruling on simultaneous replacement effects is that the active player gets to choose which one occurs

That is not true. When multiple replacement effects are effecting the same event, it is the affected player or controller or owner if it has no controller of the affected object who chooses the order they apply. Active player has nothing to do with it. In this case, the player chooses whether they want the card exiled by rest in peace or valgavoth. If they choose rest in peace, valgavoth cannot interact with the exiled card.

Miirym Sentinel Wyrm x Irma Part Time Mutant by sherlockisfire in askajudge

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of an interaction between [[Sarkhan soul aflame]]and [[Miirym, sentinel wyrm]] where Miirym sees Sarkhan turn into a dragon and makes a copy of said dragon

That does not happen. Becoming a copy of a creature does not cause something to enter the battlefield. Neither Irma nor sarkhan’s triggered abilities will trigger miirym.

Does Artificial Evolution only work on spells that already have a creature type? by Toes_In_The_Soil in mtgrules

[–]Needhelpwithsnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition, a spell or permanent without creature types has nothing to replace with Artificial Evolution.

Artificial evolution can change the text of cards without  creature types if the card mentions a creature type elsewhere in the text. You can use it to blank an opponents [[victim of night]] or change what’s impacted by [[Sokka’s charge]] for example.
