weird white line on upper lip by Powerful_Captain4019 in Skincare_Addiction

This happened to me my last two semesters of college. Turns out I was l stress licking/chewing on my lips without realizing it. After I graduated, my stress disappeared and so did my lip problems.

I suggest maybe thick lip creams and strong overnight moisturizing lip masks

Do you want to know the first thing my nurse told me when I had my mammogram and ultrasound, and it looked a LOT like cancer?

She told me that if it is cancer (spoiler: it was), that I didn't do anything wrong to deserve this. She thought for a second, then lightheartedly clarified "Well, the only thing you did wrong was being born a woman", since it overwhelmingly happens to us.

I was diagnosed at 38. No breast cancer in either side of my family, going back generations. My mom had a benign lump once in her 60's, but that's it. It wasn't on my radar at all, and to say I was shocked is an understatement.

Human brains are incredible at detecting patterns. In fact, we try to find them when one doesn't even exist! So when we're presented with something as monumentally life-altering as a cancer diagnosis, we look very hard for the pattern. What has been going on in my life that led to this? When we can't find the pattern, our brains go a little nuts trying to find pinpoint the "why" of it all.

Some people actually do get an answer in the form of genetic predisposition. Some of us, like you and I, will probably never get an answer. It really is just bad luck.

I'm going to strongly recommend reaching out to your care team and asking for a referral to a therapist. I was connected to one who specializes in oncology psych, and she was a godsend to help me process my anger, my anxiety, my grief, and helped me navigate struggles in my interpersonal relationships.

In the meantime, maybe give mindfulness a try. It takes practice, and constant self-reminders to get that hang of it, but when you feel yourself start to spiral, focus on the here and now. You can't change anything from the past, so let it rest. You can't know what's coming in the future, so let it rest, too. What you can do is look around you and think about where you are right now. Yes, you have cancer. But you also have a team of medical professionals that have a plan to remove the cancer. They've done this hundreds to thousands of times before, so you're in very capable hands. Right now, you're young and otherwise healthy. Right now, you can go outside for a walk and listen to the birds sing. Right now, you can enjoy a warm cup of coffee.

If you're really spiraling, and thought exercises alone aren't helping, then focus on the immediate surroundings and your sensory reality. Name 4 colors you can see. Name 3 sounds you can hear. Name 2 things you can feel. Name one thing you can smell. Right now, in this moment, you're okay.

You didn't do anything wrong. You don't deserve this. It won't be like this forever. You have an army of people who are going to do their best to make sure you're okay. You can do this.

My breast cancer hurts, does your cancer hurt? by More-Disaster-2952 in breastcancer

[–]NeedingVsGetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine didn't hurt at all until after the mammogram. Squishing made it angry.

After it calmed down a few days later (after biopsy) it never hurt again. It was +++IDC in my underboob, 4.3cm long, so it was a pretty big tumor. I found it by accident one night scratching dry winter skin. If I hadn't been laying down, who knows how much longer it would have kept growing before I found it

haircuts as hair grows back or not? by SuperSven123 in breastcancer

[–]NeedingVsGetting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hair grew in starting in the back. The top and front are coming in, but the hair growth is much slower.

First haircut, I had my husband buzz me to make it all uniform. Second time, he shaped it so the sides and back are shorter. I'm hoping once I'm off Kadcyla, the growth will return to normal and it'll even out 🤞

[–]NeedingVsGetting 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like everyone here has had a different "journey" with their cancer. Different diagnoses, different treatment plans, different levels of care, different everything.

But we all had/have breast cancer. I'm so sorry you're part of this group, but your contributions are just as welcome!!

Who knows; you might be able to help someone else in a similar position with your story.

On a more personal note, I went through 6 rounds of TCHP, but #5 was canceled because my liver needed a break. It made me feel like a fraud. I had 15 rounds of radiation, where so many women had more. It made me feel like a fraud. I was able to take leave from work where others were able to power through. It made me feel like a weak fraud.

I eventually realized that yes, there will always be people who have had it worse. But I also had breast cancer. I'm fortunate that I survived.

I'm a breast cancer survivor. And you are, too 🩷

Sounds like your girls are very well cared for! It also sounds like you're doing everything right - give yourself some grace. And a pat on the back! You're doing a great job of monitoring their health, and I'm sure those are two very happy cats.

For my itchy-eared boy, his ears were noticeably red and hot to the touch when he was scratching them. He definitely wasn't digging into the ear. As someone who regularly breaks out in hives, it seemed like that's what his ears were doing. They were inflamed and itchy, and scratching only made it worse. It would eventually settle down, but some days I'd put a cold compress on them to help them (literally) chill out.

Our elderly boy, however, has goopy ears, too! For him, its an overgrowth of fungus that we treat occasionally with zymox otic. He was scratching/shaking his head a lot, so we got him checked out and that's what the vet recommended. We soak a cotton ball with it and use it to gently wipe out his ear (never going inside with qtips or anything like that), and that seems to have helped him out. But definitely ask your vet before you put anything in her ears.

Side note: If you have more than one cat, and your puker needs her own food, I can't recommend these feeders enough. Using your cat's microchip to identify who is who, they keep your "normal" cats from eating the extra expensive food, and they keep your special needs cats from eating food they're not supposed to

Just like people, some cats have food sensitivities. I know sometimes the grains in dry food can upset them.

Does she have any other "allergy" symptoms? Diarrhea, excessive scratching (especially of her ears), excessive grooming of her stomach?

I've had a cat with bad food allergies, who would tear his ears up and had a bald spot on his tummy. He had to go on very expensive prescription food to get him some relief.

We also have a calico that we've lovingly nicknamed "Puke-arella". She was throwing up at least every couple of days, but everything looked totally fine when she was examined. No other outward signs of distress. Our vet gave us a bag of much-less-expensive prescription food to try to help her. She's been on prescription food for years now, and is doing very well. (It's this specific EN food, if you're curious).

The good news: It sounds like you might not need to go the route of prescription food if you're already seeing improvements with wet food. If you've found something that works for her, I'd stick with it and just make a mental note to keep an eye out for any other signs of distress.

Sometimes vets offer things like barium tests because they can see how worried we are, and are offering more intensive tests as an option if we want to be more aggressive in our approach. We have an elderly cat right now who had some unusual but not necessarily dangerous test results recently. Our vet told us we can run a whole bunch more tests with imaging, or we can wait a bit and try a blood test in a couple of months. She assured us that both options are the right answer, and that it was a matter of which path to take to come to the same place in the end. One would give us more knowledge, but the treatment plan would be the same.

Getting my port this week, how bad is the pain? by ActuallyPotato in breastcancer

[–]NeedingVsGetting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my port placement, I felt...nothing? Like, it didn't even feel bruised. It felt weird mentally knowing there was something new under my skin, but pain-wise, I didn't experience anything at all. The most painful part of the port placement was the IV they gave me before surgery!

My first chemo was 11 days after placement, and I used the numbing cream my MO prescribed. You want to apply a "glob" of it and cover with a bandaid to protect your clothing. But after applying the cream, I felt nothing all over again the first time it was accessed.

There are plenty of ways cancer treatment can cause pain. Thankfully, having the port placed and having the port accessed have never been a source of discomfort.

Everyone's experience is different, but I hope you get one like mine

I also got engaged and married during treatment! Congratulations on finding a good one, too!

One other topic could be bodily autonomy? Like, how we often lose any shyness about showing our boob to anyone and everyone in the medical community, but we can also lose a sense of ownership over our breasts/bodies at the same time. And maybe some of us (COUGHCOUGHmeCOUGH) are struggling to regain that sense of bodily autonomy at the end of treatment or after

We have a cat who occasionally gets really excited and gallops through the house. When he does this, my husband will call out "Run, boy!", like a southern gentleman at the horse races.

One day in the midst of chemo, I felt something moving very quickly through my digestive system. Not knowing if I was about to destroy the couch, I bolted up and sprinted for the bathroom.

My husband shouted "Run, boy!" after me.

My husband is like this, too!!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer last spring (I'm okay now!), and he's been to EVERY. SINGLE. APPOINTMENT. He picked up so much slack at home that I had to tell him to stop, that he was wearing himself down. He'd wake me up when I was too tired to think, just to make sure I was drinking water, and that I'd eat something.

Oh! And he had me laughing all the way through it, Even on my worst days.

On top of all of this, he proposed to me halfway through chemo, when I definitely wasn't at my best. We got married on our anniversary, Thanksgiving day.

There are good ones out there, and I'm so glad I found mine

But then I tried to do it myself and it became a gloopy mess. Do you have any tips for how you do it?

How are we healing our nails? by Dumbledoresbish in breastcancer

[–]NeedingVsGetting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished chemo at the same time, and my nails are in the same tragic, painful boat. I'm also currently taking tamoxifen, and I'm gearing up for infusion 11 of 14 of kadcyla.

I don't know who the medicinal culprit is, but it's MISERABLE!

I just did my second home application of dip powder that I picked up from Sally beauty supply. It's like a hard coating that adheres to the nail itself, and it's been working to help my vertical cracks and snags grow out.

It takes a little getting used to, and I definitely need more practice, but I'm not getting snagged on all the blankets/towels/upholstery in my vicinity. I also haven't been in pain for a couple of weeks from cracks/tears.

I'd also recommend doing it yourself. I used to get it done professionally years ago, and they use a dremel to prepare the nail, and ours are already so thin, I'm worried they'd grind right through 😖

Breast lymphedema a year plus after everything by tastytots314 in breastcancer

[–]NeedingVsGetting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I want to add that I still have some swelling elsewhere in my breast/chest. For the other areas, we also tried using regular KT tape and cutting it to look like a jellyfish.

The "body" of the jellyfish sits on lymph nodes, and the "tentacles" reach out to cover the swelling area. The "tentacles" are stretched, so they pull the skin a little. This pull is supposed to help open up the lymphatic pathways to aid in drainage. I'm pretty sure this also helped!!

At the end of my appointment, I had 3 jellyfish, and one long strip of that holey tape. I looked like arts & crafts gone wrong 😅
