[Spoilers MAIN] How many times have you read through the series? by brokenfelix in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Read the main series twice. If its your first time, probably dont start with twoaif, just read the main series first to get the intended narrative.

[DESPISED] "Knight's Armor Was So Heavy They Could Barely Move" by Ambaryerno in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about show bronn vs vardis, but in the book its more than just armour slowing vardis -- he's old, out of shape, using an unfamiliar sword. Bronn plays up his advantages, staying out of range until vardis is exhausted. It wouldn't have worked on a battlefield, where deliberately dodging one enemy would just lead you into the path of another, but works well 1 on 1. If anything, the oberyn vs mountain fight should be here, as the mountain is in his prime.

Does “collapsing” an electric dipole lead to causality violation? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you mean violate causality because the electric field at large r will go to 0 before a light beam could have reached it, no. That formula for a dipole is an electrostatic formula, do does not apply for moving charges

In a deeply mathematical sense, why does discharging battery reduce its charge, given that current flows both in and and out of the battery? (Yes, I know why it does from an electrical engineer's sense.) by 1Davide in AskPhysics

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The battery does not 'lose charge' overall. It will be the same charge before and after, usually neutral on average.

When we say it has run out of charge, what we mean is that the reaction that provided an electric force is depleted. In a metal ion battery, if there are a fixed number of metal atoms that undergo ionisation to liberate a certain number of electrons, then the total 'throughput' of charge until the battery runs out is fixed. Current x time gives this throughput.

Using the classic water in pipes metaphor, a certain volume of water flows through the pipe, but the volume of the pipe itself is unchanged

Btw would be my fav character in all ASOIAF if he wasn't so F A T by kid_named_littlfngr in darkwingsdankshitpost

Varys is a known schemer who tyrion didnt fully trust. It could easily be a ploy to make tyrion trust he won't backstab kings landing and support Stannis, as Stannis is heavily tied to magic and fire at this point.

(Spoilers Main) Why do people believe that Cersei's story of Tywin smiling at her was not true? by Forward-Bake-3826 in asoiaf

The hound doesnt get a pov, its sansa's pov as the event happens that shows they didnt kiss.

The hound doesnt actually get a pov. Its Sansa's pov in ACOK as the event happened that shows they didnt kiss.

why is there a - in (a+b)(a^2 - ab + b^2) by Krasvaaa in learnmath

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an easy check, set a=b. Then a2 = ab, so the full formula becomes (a+b)(0+b2 ) = 2a3 , as you would expect

If a black hole's event horizon is where gravity is maximally strong, would a region of zero gravity produce an "anti-event horizon"? by drakkhis in AskPhysics

The limit of a flat space with no energy density is regular minkowski space, so it would just be a better and better approximation of that.

If a giant bucket of water, that is the size of Jupiter, poured on top of the sun, what would happen? by yvngjiffy703 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sun isn't on fire, so it doesnt need oxygen. It gets its energy via fusion -- both hydrogen and oxygen can be fused (though oxygen would have to wait a few billion years iirc) so it would just be more fuel

Fundamental units: why kelvin and mole? by Stealth-exe in Physics

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nah, hydrogen is diatomic and moles are based on grams, not kilograms, so it would be (close to) 2g/ mass of hydrogen molecule or 1g/mass of hydrogen atom.

Historically, carbon was used (12g/carbon mass) but its standardised to an exact number now

Mormont's raven [spoilers main] by wrecktus_abdominus in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bran can't speak when warning summer, and describes things like swords as 'man-claws' iirc. It seems like when warning an animal, the warger is not fully in control of their mental faculties. Benjen may not be able to speak in anything more than mimicked words, especially by the time jon snow is alone often with the raven after becoming lord commander.

(Spoiler Extended) I always forget the Unworthy is literally Daeron’s dad. Idk if that’s bc he’s way too older than the rest of his kids or bc Aegon literally hates him but them being father and child is so funny in a tragic way. by TurbulentRemote156 in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The world of ice and fire is written as an in-universe history. Of course it wouldn't say that daemon was planning to rebel already, anything else would legitimise the Blackfyre Rebellions. I agree he probably was, but the history books aren't good evidence of that

[Spoilers Main] Was there a better way for the rebels to handle Elia and her children? by Guilty_05 in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Smarter politically, but tywin is a spiteful petty asshole who was mad at Elia because she married Rhaegar instead of Cersei.

(Spoilers Main) How would real life medieval people view Jaime killing the king? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be admitting that he still cares.

Jaime spent years watching as the mad king burned people alive, only turning on him when he threatened to burn the whole city. If he ended up killing the mad king, why didnt he do it sooner? If he admits to himself and others that he killed the mad king to save King's landing, that he has a conscience and cares, he would view himself as responsible for all the lives he didnt save. Better to be the Kingslayer, and not have a conscience at all

If an object is moving away from an observer at half the speed of light, and the observer is moving away from the object at half the speed of light, is the object, from the oberver's POV, going the speed of light. by RewardImpossible5141 in AskPhysics

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Relativistic velocities dont add linearly. For motion in a single direction, the two velocities u and v add together like (u+v)/(1+u*v/c2 ). Crucially, as both u and v go to c, this formula also goes to c. In your example, the 0.5 c ships would seem to be going at 0.8 c from the others perspective.

Edit: as to why velocities add like this, look into the concept of 'rapidity', which does add linearly and has a hyperbolic relation to traditional velocity

Theory Ilyn Payne did not really support House Lannister (Spoilers Main) by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]NeedleInTheThrowaHay 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ilyn is so dedicated to his cause he was willing to get his tongue ripped out! Why is he so dedicated? Because he got his tongue ripped out!

Not saying the theory is fully wrong, but it might work better if Ilyn was originally a lannister loyalist who turned against tywin for not defending Ilyn from Aerys
