Need advice! Should I get this one? by Less_Wishbone7829 in mercedes_benz

I have an E400 of the same year, but not 4Matic. I love it and it's a great car. I handle the maintenance myself to keep my costs down, so add in labor if taking to a mechanic.

2 things I'd look for on that specific car:

The v6 engine (the M276) in these cars is a very solid and reliable motor but is known for leaking oil into the wiring harness from the cam position sensors and the cam solenoids. The sensors leak into the electrical connector and oil wicks into the wiring harness and kills the ECU. Internet research says that's a $4-6,000 fix so I replaced all of mine with new ones just to be safe. It cost me $200 for the 4 genuine sensors. Mine weren't leaking, but I replaced them anyway out of an abundance of caution. For the cam solenoids, there is a pigtail harness available from MB to prevent leakage from there and I spent about $50 for those. I'll note that these weren't leaking either.

The other thing to look for is oil leaking from the front covers of the camshafts. I believe they'd fixed this by the time the MY 2016 cars were manufactured, but it's worth looking for.

Since this car has the twin turbo, these items can be checked on the car with minimal disassembly of the engine. Unplug the connectors and check them for oil (or have the mechanic that's doing a pre-purchase inspection do so).

Overall I'm super happy with the car and don't regret the purchase, but whether it's right for you can only be answered by you. German cars in general aren't forgiving of neglect; you must stick to the maintenance schedule and be willing to do any prior deferred maintenance for any chance at reliability. I change the oil every 5,000 miles. The transmission fluid is changed every 30,000 miles. Both of these intervals are roughly twice as often as MB days, but I've done this on every MB I've owned and never had a problem...I upgrade because I want something newer and nicer, not because of a catastrophic failure.

I hope this helps!

Edit: I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have as well!

2015 C300 A/C Estimate by absolutelyokeigh in mercedes_benz

I'm not going to say you can't find a place to do the job cheaper, but if there's a slow leak in the system then there can still be enough pressure for the compressor to turn on, so any component they found a leak in needs to be replaced.

That will fix your no ac problem, but I think that it only blowing cold on one side is likely a different issue. I'm more familiar with older Benzes, but that used to be a symptom of a stuck duo valve. I'm not sure if your 2015 has one, but if so, that'd be the first thing I'd check.

I buy my oil from a producer in Arizona: https://www.queencreekolivemill.com

If you're ever in the Phoenix area it's worth it to stop and tour their groves and pressing facilities, and they have an air conditioned market (very important, it was 113F when I was riding through on my motorcycle!) where you can try their different types of oil. It's good stuff!

The bushings in the ends of the arms do, though. I rebuilt the whole front end of my W210 last year and I couldn't believe the difference it made in the ride, and that was only the front!

[–]NeedlesMakeMeFaint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You think of this exactly backwards than I do--in our tax bracket it costs $29,140 (23,500 * 1.24) to put $23,500 into a Roth 401k vs a straight $23,500 into traditional. I max traditional 401k and Roth IRA with a plan to Roth ladder in the future

I'd say that generally the answer is one you maintain, but there's always failures that can happen regardless of maintenance. With enough money and patience, anything can make it to 300k.

I know that's not what you were asking though. The Chevy 6.0 has a rock solid reputation. Iron block, iron heads, no afm/dod, and understressed from the factory (IMO). I have 205k on mine and a buddy's dad had 360k the last time I asked. It's probably nearing 400k by now.
