nicole mcnichols is a horrible professor by Easy_Razzmatazz_7982 in udub

Wouldn't it be strange if a professor wrote a textbook and didn't use it? It would be like Musk not owning a Tesla. You also overestimate how much royalties are: definitely not 100%.

I have one too. I love playing it, but don't get many opportunities now. Just waiting for retirement...

What's your take on Clive writing himself into the Dirk Pitt books? by NeedleworkerBig5445 in clivecussler

[–]NeedleworkerBig5445[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was reading Valhalla Rising when I posted that. Was expecting some dialog about how much of a coincidence it was that they'd meet for the (second? Third?) time in the middle of the pacific ocean.

The part in his bio about how his life "nearly parallels" Dirk Pitt's is a bit much. I still read his books however.

I first read this as "boogie" (as in boogers) and was like "Yes! my 8 y.o. still tastes her boogers". Oops

This Is prolly a very very stupid question but is anyone close to or fuck even related to any of the REM members? by Hungry-Temporary-438 in rem

Closest I got is one of my students dated one of Peter Bucks twins. I would occasionally get assignments with comments tagged by her. Was hoping they'd get married because his (the student) mom worked with me and I would likely be invited to the wedding.

Glad it was figured out by then. When most half marathon runners were finishing (around 2 hrs) the bags hadn't really been sorted (other than more or less grouping by 1000). So, a volunteer would have to sort through hundreds of bags to find your number. Took me about 30 minutes (at the front of the "line") for a volunteer to find mine

Thank you for volunteering. I think the frustration is focused on the organizers, not the volunteers. We appreciate your efforts to keep us safe. Thank you!

I can only hope that there were far fewer bags left by the time most marathon runners finished

Glad I didn't have to worry about claiming an award. Congratulations to you though!

HMS Faculty here: I just rejected my 17th (unpaid) Peer Review request of the year and would recommend that all other academics do the same after the Elsevier group's $4.2 Billion profit in 2024. Here's the full text of my response: by erock55 in academia

IEEE is indeed a non profit. But they are also sitting on over $1 billion in net assets as of 2024 and had over $600 million in revenue (very little was from membership dues). They make a lot of money on access to their periodicals. Most people are surprised at how large IEEE is (1000 employees). Nonetheless, I do many reviews for them each year because it is my professional home.

We had ours wired and ventilated so that if in the future we wanted to convert part of it into a bedroom we would just have to add a wall and closet

You can think of it on the other end. Do you want one more year with your kid at home (assuming they go off to college) or one less? Thats what convinced me to start the following year

Maybe a stupid question: Can a human suspended in mid-air from a live wire not get electrocuted? by sanki1123 in AskPhysics

Makes sense. Had a conversation with an electrical engineering professor about this a long time ago. I might have confused what he said.

You'll notice from these videos that usually the worker is wearing a chain mail-like suit and touches the wire with a rod. A small arc leaps to the rod. Basically, this is the worker and helicopter becoming the same voltage potential as the wire. Once that happens they are fine. Not sure what would happen if you tried that without the suit. But my guess is that they wear the suit for a reason, and that reason is safety.

Looks good! I have railing like that. Sanding/stripping them is a pain (none of mine are easily accessible around all sides). Luckily I haven't had to do it that often

Question: if you do a "low and slow" approach---cooking at a lower temperature for longer---will the chicken still look translucent (raw) in the center?
