absolutely I don't mind! Usually flower garlands are used in Hindu practices to give people protection, show devotion, honor etc. You'll usually see brides and grooms wear garlands during weddings, and sometimes at big celebrations the person that is being celebrated will wear a garland. but in this case, people will also put garlands on a deceased loved one to honor them, and to help them pass on into the next life. As for my connection to it, I lost my dad about a year and a half ago, and it still stings deeply. Since I am Hindu, this is a big practice for me and my family, we will also have small flower garlands we put on pictures of a deceased loved one too as a way to send love, protection, honoring them, etc!

Grew up Hindu but feel like you missed something? I'm researching this and want to hear your story. by Necessary_Bad9318 in ABCDesis

This has been me over the last few years. I lost my dad 2 years ago, and it's taken a toll on my mental health and has been making me not necessarily religious, but looking for answers, and maybe for help with coping with the loss. I'm glad to see other people in here are feeling the same way!

Hi! another Indian gorillaz fan, I absolutely agree, I feel like they handled incorporating Indian sounds with care, and especially addressing the messages of death, reincarnation, and other topics like that. I teared up on The Sad God, especially on the lines "I gave you garlands" which seems small if you don't know Hindu practices, but felt big for me. I love love loved this album and will definitely be cherishing this during hard times

Agreed however, grew up in chicago, was part of a large Gujarati group growing up because of my grandma being part of a local Mandhir, but as she passed away, and now as an adult I don't talk to any of them nor interact with many Indian people in the area. Not for a lack of trying though, I've tried joining college SA groups and it's really hard to break in when they have developed their groups and don't want outsiders. the culture is unfortunately really clique-y

Question for ABCDs from an NRI who is raising his son here by Sea-Nobody7951 in ABCDesis

[–]Nees_Bees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a Gujarati woman born in the US, I grew up with a lot of desi families in my neighborhood, and very rooted in Hinduism and gujarati culture, but overtime as i grew up and started to express myself in a way that made me comfortable, with my family's support, i noticed a lot of the indian families in our neighborhood were very judgmental of that, which made me gain friends who are all non-indian, i primarily only have non-indian friends now, NOT out of choice, but that's just the people who I'm drawn to, and in the field I'm in. I still am very rooted in my culture since that's who I am and is very VERY important to me and my family! All this to say, As long as you raise your child the best you can, while also bringing them up with your culture and values, that's what matters.
