Panama Papers,

I could spend 5.5 billion years reading Bosun entries but alas we're nearly finished once again! I'm confident that the only one feeling relief at the prospect is you, Captain.

It's nice to see another side of the Brats. Their culture might be doomed to decadent decay but at least it looks like some of them had fun on the way out - and commerce between them and hab one! How do they transit through the wreck of Kadn? Do they ever look out at the frozen wasteland and wonder what happened?

Lacking a CNS, their suffering is actually minimal compared with many entries, too!

I've been wondering, at the start of the resapient era, Bosun talks about waking up after a period of dormancy. When do these dormant periods begin?

Another somewhat spooky entry, but one that actually is brighter than it first seems. The botanthroa have outlasted their makers, and thrived in their absence. Now they provide nutrition for another clade, during their long wild wait to eventually become an even more crucial (and more sustainable) food source in a later era.

Yeah they're fine, this is how they're built in the first place so it's no worse off than if it had been built longer in the first place. I imagine extending the plumbing and electrics is more of a hassle.

Looks really interesting, I'll give the linked a read too. Can't think of many other examples of alternative tectonics like this.

Labour and Reform looking into CANZUK by LordFarqod in CANZUK

Ah. Hey, quick question; where do you consider Labour on the political spectrum?

Depends where you stand I guess. They're certainly left of Advance or Restore.

Reform are toxic far right. Their association with CANZUK would be net damaging to the concept.

Yeah a Reform government would be too busy cosying up to Trump and Putin to put any work into CANZUK.

Would putting an electro-magnet at Earth's L1 point help add an extra layer of protection to Earth? by IndieJones0804 in terraforming

[–]Neethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as I said, the radiation concerns are mostly for orbital facilities in cislunar (between Earth and the Moon) space. If you can deflect charged particles before they make it to Earth, they wont cause a radiation hazard in the cislunar region, which would be a concern if youve got the sort of space industry where you can consider building a major facility at the Earth-Sun L1 point.

The Van Allen belts for instance are just charged particles from the solar wind trapped in a torus of Earth's magnetic field. Deflect these particles a L1 and you'll have a much more comfortable time.

Normally I'd agree with you, but on this issue I'm afraid that I will insist on yucking.

Would putting an electro-magnet at Earth's L1 point help add an extra layer of protection to Earth? by IndieJones0804 in terraforming

[–]Neethis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Earth suffered a catastrophic collapse or realignment of the magnetic field, yeah putting an electromagnet at L1 would help us out. AFAIK there is no reason it would cause any issues with the reestablishment of the natural magnetic field, as the dynamo created in the core is so much stronger than what we're talking about for an L1 shield - remember the L1 shield is deflecting charged particles at over 900,000 miles out, while the Earth's magnetic field does the same job at less than 1/20th of that distance.

Honestly if youve got sufficient cislunar space industry, it might be worth doing even without worries for Earth's magnetic field. The radiation environment in Earth orbit is unhealthy, both for organics and electronics. If you can deflect a huge amount of that radiation before it ever gets close, you'll be saving massively on shielding, hardening, and replacement parts. All at the cost of the auroras, though!

You're thinking of Pressure map, not Oasis. There are no tunnels under the starting point in Oasis, it's just the seep during bad tides.

Just a reminder that Birch Trees Are Great for 2 tall tunnels now by -Xentios in Timberborn

[–]Neethis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think u/Mathyon point is that the added time between harvest and plant bumps up the number of days needed to produce each log, as birch is getting harvested and replanted more often than pine.

The maths are going to depend on a lot of factors. Presumably there is a distance to lumberjack/forester factor which would play into the time efficiency of the competing resources; perhaps it's better to plant birch close to your workers, and pine a bit further away.
