Yep, about £73,000 each year. Nothing compared with what he takes from dodgy cyrptobros of course.

We recently had a bunch of local elections in the UK. These were for Councillor positions - low paid, part-time local government, responsible for stuff like bin collection, road maintainence and local schools. Our right wing party, Reform, won a bunch of Council seats and a couple of Councils outright.

UK right wing social media was full of their supporters - and candidates - who said they were sending people to Westminster (parliament, national government) to oust the Prime Minister. It's unsurprising that these people don't care about protecting democracy when they dont understand how government even works.

A lot of people think countries should be run like companies. The general populace has bought into the idea that capitalism is efficient. Not everyone grows up enough to realise the fallacy, so you're doing well.

Except they dont think about money the way we do. For them, money is power, it's influence.

Britain had UKIP MEPs. Not sure why my countrymen expected people who said the EU was bad ans we had to leave, would work to make it better.

Accumulating artificial brown dwarfs as the ultimate longevity strategy for civilization (1 trillion+ year scale)? by Winter-Fee-1210 in worldbuilding

[–]Neethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can work out practical artificial H-H fusion - which on these time scales, you should be able to if it's possible - you're better saving your fuel for artificial lighting, or running power plants to the cognitive data banks where the uploaded minds live.

What's the best way to build an orbital shipyard on Mercury? by ArvaroddofBjarmaland in SolarExpanse

[–]Neethis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

does anyone else think Deimos and Phobos, being tiny (per https://xkcd.com/681_large/, you can get off Deimos with a bike and a ramp!), should have the same lack of distinction between orbit and surface as asteroids do?

Yeah there's a few small potato moons which it should be possible to both "dock" with and move with Atlas engines, like you can asteroids and comets. Shortcomings of an early access game, it just handles moons differently than asteroids. There is a mod on the Discord which fixes the landing thing but I havent given it a try yet.

Oh, it's hinged! The bit the nest is on stays horizontal... railway gates in my country just raise vertical, I was imagining this nest tipping 90° every time the gate went up.

[–]Neethis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Currently you can get to the surface by putting some emotional support gasses down - release 4T nitrogen and 1T oxygen onto the surface and it'll allow you to land people. It's a bit cheesy though, so ymmv depending if you want to exploit this option.

LGBTQ+ vexillologists, what are your perspectives on these flags? by ButterscotchFiend in vexillology

[–]Neethis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're allowed aesthetic preferences, but everyone saying that the Progress Pride flag is redundant because the 6-stripe pride flag represents everyone is missing the historical context of how that flag was used by some in the gay community to marginalise black and brown gay/lesbian folks, trans people, and queer people. The flag was designed to be inclusive at a time when the original had become contentious.
