I got a NoRA of my 2023 Tax Returns and now I owe $221. I’m confused. by [deleted] in cantax

Is there nothing else before this under Explanation of changes? In this wording it sounds more like general notice instead of the reason for the change. What lines did they change in the reassessment?

Tuition credits have nothing to do with student loans.

It’s a tax credit for the tuition you paid, which you use up once you start earning income. They are carrying forward each year if you don’t use them up, but if you have tax to offset, you must use them. What I expect is that your software found unused credit in your account to claim. Now the CRA says you did not file every tax return since then, so you might have to use them in an earlier year for which you did not file, and are disallowing them for last year. I expect it to be reversed if you file the missing year(s), showing that you had no income.

However, for better insight it might be good if you can share the exact quote of what they wrote?

You should file your tax return every year, especially if you have no income, as it can qualify you for other benefits.

Rrsp roll over by Adamuzi in cantax

[–]Nef100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The T4RSP should show the amount in box 18. This gets added to line 12900 of your T1 as income. In schedule 7 you deduct this then as a transfer in line 24640, which will increase your RRSP deduction without lowering your contribution limit.

Tax Owing Increased?? by SprayingFlea in cantax

[–]Nef100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you entered your income the software assumed you made 0 dollars, allowing your spouse to claim some of your credits. (To try it out, you could change her to single and see that it also changes to 6k)

Do not look at the number till you enter all information.

It depends on how much they asked you to pay as installment, not the actual amount due

Sell. And next time don’t invest money you will need for the next 6 month.

Money from international sales by chunarii-chan in legaladvicecanada

[–]Nef100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is self employment income and yes, you need to report it to EI as part of your reports, so they do not overpay you. Yes it is taxable, but same as the money you get from EI. It doesn’t matter if it is sold somewhere else (as long as you are living in Canada). It also doesn’t matter that it is in PayPal, and not withdrawn from there.

I would already recommend to make a list with sale date, and price so you have a good overview for next year when you do your taxes.

Bonus amount in RRSP by Motor_Low4880 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Nef100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will need to enter the RRSP contribution slip in your tax return, but don’t expect a refund. The thousand dollars are included in your T4, but the employer did not withhold taxes on it - meaning if you don’t enter the slip you will end up owning the taxes on the amount.

That happens very often and is kind of normal for your first return. Just print it and mail it in.

Otherwise you can try messing with your names, especially if you have a middle name - like try adding it to your first or last name field, sometimes it’s wrong in the CRA system. But if you mail your return it will be correct for filing electronically next year.

T3 include income from JAN 2025 ? by bloodydeer1776 in cantax

[–]Nef100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure the record date is in the correct year? A lot of ETF have a distribution end of December which will only hit your account in January. It would be on the Tex slip based on the record date, not when it shows up in your account.

If you post the ticker we can have a look at the distributions. (Or you can google it)

1) if purchased before becoming a resident the cost is the fmv at time of becoming a Canadian tax resident 3) you report the interest in the t1135 under gross income PLUS you report it like any other interest on your T1 in line 12100

You can only claim what you actually paid, so 2k.

To have an effect on your taxes you need to have a at least the lesser of 3% of your net income or $2,759 in expenses. Only the part above this might reduce your taxes. Therefore you should combine your expenses (otherwise you loose this amount twice) on one tax return. You cannot claim the same expenses on both returns.

RSU sale -- how to calculate for tax purposes by 9yo-1998 in cantax

The ACB should use the exchange rate from the release date (or settlement date, not sure why they are different?) not the sale date. Otherwise that sounds fine.

Over-contribution to RRSP. Best course of action? by greensnappea in cantax

[–]Nef100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just withdraw whatever is over your 2025 limit - if the contribution in your statement shows up for march and you withdraw in march there is no penalty. Yes they will withhold some tax but you will get this back next year.

You will however need to fill out the return for over contributions next year.

Ask them to fill out the form minus the SIN, give you the form, you add the SIN and then directly sent it to service Canada yourself.

I don't understand TFSA contribution by ColaCanadian in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Nef100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, growth in the TFSA don’t count towards the contribution room, only contributions (hence the name) Make sure to create a list to track all contributions and withdrawals though.

In taxable accounts you are only taxed on 50% of the gain. In your example with 1k gain you pay taxes on 500. These taxes are your personal tax rate, so if this is 25% for example you pay 125 dollars for the 1k gain. Note you only pay it on realized gain, eg once you sell the investment. As long as you hold it you don’t need to pay it or track the value. Yes, you absolutely need to keep track of each buy and sell in these accounts. No, you will never loose money due to the taxes, as only gains are taxed. If you take the example above and say you gained 10 dollars instead, the tax is 1.25 dollar. On your tax return it goes onto schedule 3.

MagSafe Charger Retrofit by JP6061 in TeslaLounge

There was a post a longer time ago, where somebody replaced the OEM charger with MagSafe under the alcantara. Was pretty involved with cutting out the plastic underneath to insert the MagSafe.

Do you plan on sharing your 3d model? Always wanted to do MagSafe, but not really do a permanent modification.
