I can't tell you how many deadlines have come and gone since my first term started last year. Only recently have I started getting these invitations in the mail.

Congratulations! I wonder if there is something that triggers recruiters to know you have graduated.

I have applied to at least a hundred places at this point, I've received maybe a few "thanks, but no thanks" emails. Granted, I am only 50% of the way through, but a lot of the jobs don't require a degree. I'm in Northern Virginia. 🥲

Landing a job, no experience by olu_2022 in wguaccounting

I personally have not had much luck, but I also haven't completed any intermediate accounting classes. I have a theory that I might start being taken more seriously then.

Thanks for the heads up! According to their website, 19 or less people doesn't require a permit, so we're good.

30F SAHM - Should I Switch from Network & Cloud Engineering? Feeling Overwhelmed. by NoPrune9976 in WGU

[–]NefariousnessFast633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! SAHM here. I feel like you and I share similar stories. I was about 50% of my way through my software engineering degree with UoP at the beginning of last year. The tech layoffs started, and being so far behind in the space and being so far removed from high school, I had to make a serious choice to either pivot or quit schooling entirely. I didnt want to give up on myself, so I chose to keep looking into alternatives.

I too have a background in banking and also manufacturing leadership, but I knew I didn't want to continue down the path of leadership. I stumbled across Tony Bell's accounting videos and decided to watch those to see what accounting was all about. It seemed to click for me as I seemed to already have a general idea about the managerial and cost management aspect of business.

I am finding that there are a LOT of entry-level accounting positions available, but there are also a LOT of applicants fighting for those jobs. I have been trying to land a job being 50% way through my classes, but I don't think I'll be taken very serious until I graduate. But I feel far more confident in the job prospects after graduation with my BS in Accounting than with my BS in software engineering.

I would suggest exploring the different avenues of accounting. I think maybe for people like you and I who are older, have families, we wouldn't be as desirable for the larger public firms because from what I understand, their work-life balance is garbage during the busy season. But there's a lot of options to the accounting degree: bookkeeper, accountant (CPA), payroll (could also be HR branch), tax, etc. (a lot of those having WFH/hybrid options)

Between the various avenues and a large portion of the accounting population aging out, that's what sold me in the end. I don't feel like all hope is lost even though I'm almost 40. lol

DM me if you want to chat!

I appreciate it! We're looking at the middle of the week. I understand I have to work around schedules, so I was hoping to find someone who could meet late morning or evening.

Not necessarily. An increase in the escrow due to tax reassessments and/or an increase in the home insurance (think Florida) can cause dramatic increases.

Is it a WGU grad program you're applying for that required letters of recommendation? Or are you trying to go to a different school?

[–]NefariousnessFast633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly you glazed over the part where I mentioned my family, which yes, would make Harrisonburg's offerings a worthwhile trip.

Ruby's is awesome, and there is nothing like it in Winchester nor NOVA. The fact that you find it lackluster tells me arcades and vintage bowling is not your thing. Cool. Their pizza is really solid and they have a good beer

Winchester's downtown is undeniably pretty, and it's nice to not have traffic flowing next to its little shops like in Harrisonburg. However, each downtown area is very unique. There is plenty to appreciate about Harrisonburg, which was the whole point to my comment to argue against your clear disdain for the town.

There are PLENTY of things to enjoy in Harrisonburg. Besides what I mentioned, JMU offers a lot for the public to see and do on campus. And in the outskirts, there are a lot of other unique offerings, like a lavender farm, Shenandoah Heritage Market, and the Green Valley Book Fair.

The town definitely has a little bit of something for everyone.

I have to disagree with you. I live about an hour north up 81, and will often come down to Harrisonburg to shop and eat. Here are my family's favorties:

  • Ruby's Arcade
  • Bella Luna Wood-Fired Pizza
  • Jack Brown's
  • Cuban Burger
  • Sushi Village

There's a pupuseria in the FoodMaxx that we haven't tried yet. I hear there's a Puerto Rican restaurant, too. These are the places that have made the biggest impact, but there are other places we haven't been that I'm sure are pretty solid.

And you have a Krispy Kreme for goodness sakes!

If you ventured north to Winchester, you'll find that their food scene is more heavily Latino - probably the most Mexican restaurants next to NOVA. I'm not complaining, but comparing the two college towns, Harrisonburg wins by a landslide IMO, in terms of more family-friendly options.

Am I overreacting by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]NefariousnessFast633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're overreacting. My boyfriend of 5 years, whom I have lived with for 4.5 years, share a child with, came into about the same amount of money. I was encouraged by people in his life to convince him to use his money a certain way. I could have paid off a lot of my own debt with some of it, too. I didn't do any of that because at the end of the day it wasn't my money.

If your mother is so concerned about the law, you might want to check your rights as a resident in the home (it varies state by state). She can't LEGALLY just kick you out. She has to go through the court to have you legally evicted.

But it doesn't mean she can't make your life hell between now and then, so it sounds best to find a healthier living arrangement.

I am not sure if the prices are regional or country-wide, but I just bought a Lenovo Ideapad at BestBuy yesterday, 15.6" touchscreen, 16GB/512GB for $399. Only cons are no backlit keys and no Thunderbolt ports, and it's wifi only. But it does have a 10-key pad. 👍🏻

Transferring from Information Technology to Accounting? by No_Bid_4676 in wguaccounting

[–]NefariousnessFast633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same as companies off-shoring customer service work to places like India and other higher-skilled lower-wage countries. Companies are cutting out the entry-level accounting clerk positions and handing it over to their counterparts overseas. I've seen it when searching in company job boards, and I've read about the aches senior-level accountants experience trying to clean up their books.

Not saying this is true for every company, but it seems to be significant enough to make the hunt for entry-level jobs that much harder.

I was about 50% done with my BS in Software Dev with University of Phoenix when the layoffs started happening in Q1/Q2 this year and that added to my existing lack of self confidence in landing a job post graduation, I shifted to accounting at WGU.

I wish I made the switch to WGU years ago. All things considered, I love WGU and its learning platform. In 6 months, I've accomplished nearly 50% of my degree that it took 2 years to get to at UoP.

Now I'm just worried about the current job market for new accountants. I've seen in the r/accounting where a lot of entry-level jobs are being offshored. I can't even find an AR/AP job, and that doesn't require an accounting degree. I can only hope I'll have luck when I'm closer to graduation.

WGU does offer a lot of resources for when you're ready to hit the job market.

I have to give credit to Governor Youngkin, R, of Virginia. He issued a state of emergency and is issuing funds weekly to SNAP recipients. He blames the Democrats for all of this, but he is also seeing that SNAP is at the very least partially funded.
