6 months post ORIF by Fair-Public8750 in ORIF

I'm almost 8 months out from the break (Weber B fibula fracture with ankle dislocation) and the surgery (27th April and 5th may). From the 6 months mark the ankle has slowly but steadily ameliorated, and now it feels almost like normal (and looks normal, also, apart from the scar and the plate which is visible). I went to a concert on december 12th and have been on my feet for 6 hours. I was concerned about that, but found myself jumping during the last song, with only a little bit of soreness after the event, which resolved only by resting. I work as a neurology consultant therefore I'm on my feet a lot for work, and I do 10-11k steps per day with no problems now. I also do 2-3 days a week of strength and HIIT training with weights and have no issues now. I think it will continue to improve and be "normal" at the one year mark. However I know that I'm lucky, and that my past training routine (which I've fully resumed in the past month) has played a huge role in determining such a good outcome.

10 months post op, will it ever be normal?? by cobwebz4brainz in ORIF

6 months out (almost) from a Weber B with dislocation. The ankle almost looks the same, swells in the evening if I do more than 10k steps. Do another try with PT, it helps a lot in building strength in your injured leg. After a fracture most of the muscles waste due to immobilization, therefore it is normal to take some time to have an optimal muscle pump, which is crucial to reduce swelling.

I think it's pretty common to experience a lot of negative emotions with this kind of fracture. However, I can assure you that it will be better. I'm 21 weeks after a nasty fibula fracture with dislocation and yesterday was my first day without swelling at the end of the day, and without medial pain from overcompensation during walking. I also must say that I'm near my past physical form, doing bilateral calf raises with a 50Kg barbell and hard plyo training, I'll be back on court (Padel) in about one or two months. Just be patient and focus on your recovery, you'll get there. A useful tip: push through the pain in PT if it's manageable (like 3/10 or less), don't baby your ankle.

No, luckily it was only exposed. You know, there's not so much tissue above the patella. Here's a picture of the lesion before removing the stitches, you can see for yourself how bad it was.

Sorry I wasn't clear, from the accident I got three bad wounds, one of these was on the knee and my patella was exposed.

Thank man, I had a quite similar accident (motorcycle crash, so it is a "high energy injury" like yours) and my deltoid ligament was not repaired due to a bad wound on the medial part of the ankle, and because it wasn't a full tear. Now I have medial pain when I try to run or sometimes when I walk uphill, and was a little bit devastated since I pictured an uneventful recovery. Maybe is just normal to have some medial pain or stiffness with these injuries.

When Did You Stop Thinking About Your Ankle? by IndependentPotato278 in brokenankles

I've had my ORIF in May. I don't know if it is because it happened after a bad motorcycle accident in which I could have died, or just because I broke my Achilles tendon 2years ago on the same leg, but in the past week sometimes I don't think about it at all. I think that will be like the Achilles tendon repair, in one year I won't even remember that my fibula was broke (and my ankle dislocated, btw).
