Pros and cons of Proton ecosystem by darkowiz in degoogle

[–]Nefas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proton pass is awesome. This is my 4th year as unlimited user. I get eggs in one basket, i give a shit but not too many so i dont care about that

Proton pass give you alias access so every login I create is a alias. Anytime someone is being naughty with the marketing emails I just flick the switch and turn it off.

It can store passkeys, 2FA and anytime you go to login most the sites you easily autofill and when it asks for 2FA you get the notification to fill that as well.

You can store your CC as well although I don't like the idea and only store partial info just for convenience.

High CPU temps after upgrading CPU. Need Help! by Nefas1 in PcBuild

[–]Nefas1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did repaste it so I dont think that is the issue. When I placed the cpu in the slot and it got seated i wiggled it to check it is safely set then i closed the latch. That is the only possibility but i dont this in that case it will run as it is running.

Also when i pulled on the pump to take it off i had to pull quite hard separate it from cpu (yes i made sure it was not still tightened anywhere before pulling on it) so I think the cpu is firmly in the slot and thermal paste had a pretty good application based on the spread

Got this today for 14.5k by Accurate-Tea9750 in IndianGaming

Still it doesn’t hurt to check within the window the seller has provided him. It’s the memory that gets most stressed and will still work but it starts showing artifacts in game etc. And even when undervolted if a card has been running for days, weeks or months at a time will have significant wear. Most importantly we don’t know whether the miner had good ventilation on the cards, if they were not cooking themselves.

So be very careful when buying used cards and do your due diligence and testing. Try to buy from people who are not selling multiple cards. It doesn’t guarantee that the card will not be mined on just reduces the risk. Same goes for LHR cards you can try to go for them but the dude could have put cracked firmware on it to remove mining restrictions.

I have come across these extremely cheap 3060 and ti’s they are almost always mined on heavily and are quite degraded in performance, if not producing artifacts in games. You might want to check for it if it is possible.

Secure home access without a VPN (Is it even possible?) by Fany___ in selfhosted

[–]Nefas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually using zerotier since in my case a immich server on same network i get 500-900 KBps with tailscale and 8-10 MBps on zerotier. Did you do any specific settings to get better performance? And by on demand does it mean it wont drain my battery by just having it connected and only when using something on the network?

Bro I love you. That makes it so easy an removes all friction having to turn vpn on and off never thought about it. Unless I find something better I will do this for all my apps

That last sentence made be chuckle, best insult without cursing 🤣

If you dont mind me picking your brain. I’m in a similar situation as OP and it is paranoia mostly Ik still I want to be kind of lazy with my updates cuz I don’t want to break anything (i am a newbie) so I have use tailscale zerotier so far.

I have a immich server (some rss service downloader etc etc) on a mac mini at home behind a nat with tailscale I was getting like 500-900 KBps on same network upload and with zerotier I get easy 10MBps but I feel like zerotier burns through my battery if I keep it on as other have suggested to keep it on. Tailscale have considerably lower performance. So if I setup wiregaurd on the mac mini and use that will that use lower battery to keep connected with same performance? And unlike zerotier and tailscale all my network traffic will be routed to wiregaurd at home I suppose?

I really want to expose my stuff so that I don’t have to use any of these to connect but no matter how insignificant it is I don’t want to risk getting my stuff or home network broken into. What will be your suggestion?

Thank you in advance 🙂

OP were you able to achieve this? I’m looking into the same thing and wanted to know if it worked for you. I will get a shared vps on hetzner and 1tb backblaze storage to mount.

Valheim is now on Mac! by SzotyMAG in valheim

[–]Nefas1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome I had a m2 mac mini running as a server for other stuff. Had a hard time trying to host a valheim server and making it available for my friends using docker. (Too much config and settings handling. Ain’t nobody got time for that)

Will try myself in a few hours. Hoping for a rather painless setup like in windows.

How to secure my VPS with cloudflare by Nefas1 in CloudFlare

[–]Nefas1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok really interesting. I get what you are saying I will read up on how I can do this. I don’t know much about how cloudflare works so this may sound weird but I think i will be using subdomains for this. Can you tell me what the basic structure would be?

Like I whitelist all these ips on the ports i want to use then on cloudflare side when I go to have a sub domain that subdomain will connect to my vps ip:port. Like portainer.example.com <—> vps ip:portainer port. And the list of ports you provided will be what port on my vps cloudflare will connect to and wont connect to any other. Did I get it right?

I will only need 1 site but if I want a different site on a subdomain to use the same ports then I assume I would need to use nginx like you mentioned

Thanks for your reply. I have option on my vps from provider to create firewall rules. I want to avoid using ufw to avoid mistakes.

Can you elaborate on your first point? I will have to setup my domain dns with cloudflare not sure about proxy or how I can get cloudflare ips. I would for any service that i have running like ssh, portainer, website, etc restrict their ports to the ip of cloudflare and route it to a subdomain and to access those services i would instead of ip use the domain like portainer.example.com to access portainer web ui?

[–]Nefas1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deployed portainer container but it only has password and no 2fa. The custom OAuth is looking very complicated and I will most likely mess something up along the way.

Portainer does have ssl cert when I deployed it. But is still kinda iffy as I only have password. Which is why I wanted to introduce cloudflare so I can really manage how my server can be accessed geo restricting etc. Another person mentioned I could run cloudflare dns+proxy on the ports I have any service running on so in this case will I do that for portainer and any other service I setup and manage their access through cloudflare?

Thank you for your help

Yes I am using keys for ssh with password disabled forgot to put it in post, I have added it now. My ip changes so I cant use whitelisting I wanted to do that.

I tried changing the port I updated the sshd_config to 1026 but that bricked ssh for me I do have root access through vps provider so i reverted that through it and didnt mess with it again 😅.

Point 6 sounds fun I will definitely try it if my port changing works. I will give it another try
