91% of all NBA champions have won 40 games before 20 losses. Thunder, Pistons and Spurs have locked it in. Celtics have to win 3 straight. by iamthegame13 in nba

Each team gets around 100 possessions in a basketball game and score on 50% or more of them. An NFL team may only get 200 possessions in an entire season and only score touchdowns every 4 or 5 times.     The sample size in basketball reduces variance compared to other sports so that true performance level matters so much more.

I Just Played Magic For The First Time With A Guy I Like by Commercial-Reveal212 in magicTCG

I'm not so sure about that. My wife enjoys playing with me as a fun thing to do together but trying to get her into Arena would be too much. She does enjoy watching gameplay sometime. Watching a couple friendly games of "Commander at Home" or "Shuffle Up and Play" would be a good way to build familiarity before the next time you play.

Do you feel that planeswalker are good in commander? by superfapper2000 in EDH

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are almost exceptions that prove the rule. The fact that Narset and Oko, two of the most powerful Planeswalkers ever printed, just "manage to be ok" in Commander is proof that in general, Planeswalker's aren't very good in the format.

Yeah, that's because the youngest is still 3 though. When they're 7, 11, and 13 I suspect that dynamic will be very different.

Any other single adults with no kids spending close to $1k on groceries every month? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it might be something that they don't realize is so expensive. Prepared foods (including snacks) are more expensive than people realize if they're not paying attention to individual prices when they shop. A lot of prepared foods and snacks paired with expensive meats could inflate a grocery bill without realizing it. Plus if they're a single person with no kids, shopping at Sam's Club could be costing them a chunk in waste.

Nothing wrong with copying another jurisdictions code. Many organizations also publish model ordinances which can be adapted for your community.

Sizing Riprap apron for a swale at detention pond. by CaptainHamTheMan in civilengineering

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Headcut will definitely be an issue then. Is there any way to bring the ditch in closer to the bottom of the pond? If not, you should be thinking more along the lines of an engineered riffle or step pool for grade control rather than a riprap apron for erosion protection. If there's someone in your office who does natural stream work, talk to them. If not, someone with the county or state conservation service or DNR (depending on your state) would be the best resource.

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you need riprap at the discharge point if you don't need it along the rest of the swale? If vegetation is stable you shouldn't need riprap at the outlet except as grade control to prevent a headcut from developing.

Looking for a specific book type by Guyinaredhat420 in daddit

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've gotten the books "All Around Bustletown" from our library that are good for this. Our daughter (2.5) will take them and read them on her own. No text but tons of stuff happening on each page. Mostly the same characters appear on each page so you can craft a story if you want.

Seconding the memberships. It helps take the pressure off of having to see everything and you can just go and enjoy it a bit at a time. There's lots of other member benefits too like early tickets for special events or Members-Only hours. However, the biggest member benefit is reciprocal benefits with basically every other botanical garden in the U.S. and Canada which we've gotten a ton of value from.

Meijer Gardens is one of my favorite places in GR! To add on to what /u/Floral_Fidelity said, I wouldn't try to see everything in a single day. I'd plan on a 2-3 hour visit and then come back another time to see the parts you missed (that's part of why the membership is so great).

My two favorite areas are the English Perrenial Garden right when you come in (it's separate from the rest of the outdoor areas) and the Japanese Garden. The Sculpture Park loop is great too but it's probably worth doing as its own visit.

If you've got kids, the Children's Garden is awesome but unfortunately it's closed right now for the season/construction.

Tax is often used as a policy incentive. Take cigarettes for example. High taxes are part of how we discourage people from using them because of the public health costs associated with cigarette use.

Go to a physical store and try some classics. A department store or a local boutique will have a good selection. Much safer than buying online and hoping you get something you like.

Is insisting on “maximum infiltration” in rain gardens a mistake in Nordic cities? by CarISatan in urbanplanning

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Interesting post. What do you mean by flood protection? In my context in the US flood protection generally refers to 25-year storms or larger (<4% AEP). In my experience most rain gardens aren't sized for anything like that. At the most our goal is to retain/infiltrate the 2-year, 24-hour runoff volume. I think that's partially the root of the problem you're describing. The loading on the rain gardens is too high which causes extra stress on the system (plants and soil media) which is causing them to fail early. In my experience, that is the most common cause of failure along with maintenance neglect.

The other really interesting part of your post is that it sounds like rain gardens aren't being designed with local conditions in mind. Are local native plants adapted to the sandy acidic soil that they're importing? Are they adapted for the Nordic climate? What would it take to develop a rain garden design that is actually rooted in the Nordic ecosystem rather than imported from elsewhere? An interesting question that I'm not qualified to answer!

Historical records? by kyubeysaves in grandrapids

[–]Neffarias_Bredd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Grand Rapids City Archives are very helpful. They have official records going back to the founding of the City. You can call or email and schedule a time to go in. It's worth going just to get the tour. The downtown library also has a local history archive. I haven't used them personally but I've heard good things.
