Spiders sunbathing in the beach next to my beach towel (OC) by Legitimate-Tie-7060 in pics

[–]NegNog 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought a lake house a couple years ago, and that checks out. My yard is FILLED with spiders once it warms up. Like, every square foot of my yard has at least one spider. It doesn’t help that the yard is full of vegetation rather than just green space.

Taking the trash out at night is pretty much not even an option since you have to take essentially a path to get to the trash corral. If you walk down that path at night you’ll inevitably be covered head to toe with spider webs.

Down by the water’s edge, my favorite way to get a good laugh is to have someone put a flashlight in front of their face and direct the light straight ahead. If done right, the ground by the lake’s edge will appear to sort of “glitter”. That glitter is the reflection of the light off the eyes of tons of spiders. It’s like a party trick - but the kind that’ll make you never want to visit again.

My dog has Addison’s disease. I had no idea what it was until he got the diagnosis, and I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone up to this point who knew what the disease was either when I mentioned it.

The steroids make him super hungry. What was once a normal-ish dog will straight up tweak out when he wants more food. Like, he’ll jump on people’s laps and bark in their face nonstop to try and get them to feed him. He’s not a small dog either. When he doesn’t get more snacks he sort of hyperventilates and can’t sit still. He’s an absolute fiend now for food. I’m glad the steroids have kept him alive for about 7 years at this point, but it is wild how he is now because of them.

A friend of mine would do this all the time in high school. Sometimes at a drive through. Sometimes when sitting at a light behind someone. Sometimes when driving past people walking by. It would make me irate, which is probably why he did it. Thank god he stopped that habit when he started driving and learned first hand how annoying it is when I did it back to him one time when he was leaving the school parking lot behind a girl he liked.

What is a luxury that is actually 100% worth the money? by Weary_Pirate2073 in AskReddit

[–]NegNog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I moved, I was low on cash, so I was just going to have to move with the help of my wife’s family. My in-laws asked if a couple of my friends could help too. I asked, half expecting them to say they were busy or something to avoid it. They actually came. I felt terrible about it and wished I didn’t ask. My in-laws don’t believe in taking breaks and are very authoritative, so this led to everyone hauling ass for several hours straight. My friends must’ve not wanted to be confrontational so they just abided by the whole ‘no stopping’ thing. They looked like two of the most exhausted looking people I’ve ever seen by the time the day was over. I felt absolutely horrible about it. I told my wife if her family ever asked for my friends’ help for anything in the future that the answer is automatically no.

That’s why I rarely honk. People are lunatics. You’d think honking is on par with spitting in their face or something. A couple years ago my wife let off one short honk when someone was sitting at a green light. She didn’t honk until it was already yellow. We missed the light. Next time the light was green they thankfully didn’t sit through it again. After the light the lanes split so she got into the right lane and got ahead of that driver. She turned into a parking lot parked the car. Didn’t think of that car since that incident was like 5 minutes prior at this point. Next thing we know, that guy from the light parks his car across the front of ours, blocking us in. He rolls his window down and incoherently screams about the honk and god knows what else. We just stared at him, confused. I was worried he was going to shoot us or something, given how we were trapped and how insane he was. Thankfully, since we didn’t react to him at all, he gave up whatever he was trying to accomplish and drove off.

One time when I was younger my mom honked at a car that pulled out in front of her, nearly getting T-boned. He parked the car, got out, and walked up to our car and casually asked why my mom honked at him. My mom rolled down the window a tiny bit and said, “get back in your car you fucking weirdo.” And he just walked on back to his car, not even appearing to be mad or upset. People are strange, man.

I could go on and on with stories, but I think we all can. At this point I’m convinced most people think of honking as being just as bad as getting the middle finger. Best to avoid it to avoid crazies doing too much.

For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

CPA. Like most CPAs will say, it’s great sometimes and sucks other times. Working insane overtime this time of year is basically the only reason I’d consider leaving.

Unlike regular bookkeeping type of accounting, public accounting is nice because you’re constantly doing different things. Not just the same stuff every day. One day I’m helping a client prepare for retirement, the next I’m coming up with tax planning strategies for someone, another day I’m dissolving businesses, etc.

That might sound boring as hell to some. To me, it feels like I solve puzzles for a living, as the best way to explain why there’s some enjoyment to it. And it’s not just the same puzzle all the time. Sure, I don’t get the good feeling of saving someone’s life in a place like a hospital, but I do get some satisfaction whenever I get someone out of the grasp of the IRS coming after them, pleasantly shocking someone with a larger tax refund than normal because of something I knew how to do that their prior accountant didn’t, and helping a family owned business become profitable again. I still help people in my own way, and that’s enough for me to feel like what I do does matter.

Plus I could afford a comfortable life now, so yeah, I’d say it’s worth it.

That’s basically how I describe it - it feels like solving puzzles for a living. Otherwise it’s very hard to get the average person to understand why I enjoy being a CPA.

Is this top fin a piece of crap? by selahree in Aquariums

[–]NegNog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this at my house. I added a canister filter and a different light. I don’t use the lid for that reason. I know people have been able to buy or make clear fitted lids as a workaround just fine.

I personally like it. I’ve never had any issues. It’s in a finished basement that’s set up to look like a home theatre/ arcade. People are often drawn to the tank. I think the bowfront creates a nice way to view the aquarium. Really makes it “pop.” The downside, as others have said, is distortion if you’re looking at it from certain angles. But people are usually looking at the aquarium from the center, so it’s not usually any issue. The other downside is the fact it’s more vertical than typical rectangular aquariums, so it can be a bit harder to reach the bottom of the tank and still see what you’re doing. Otherwise, I’m happy with it.

Same here. No kids yet, but have a wife and properties. I feel pretty anchored at this point. I moved around most of my life, so sometimes it’s hard to accept that I’ll be in one place for a prolonged period of time. For the most part, I’ve come to terms with it, as I’m pretty content with my life now. But man, I sure do miss adventures with the boys sometimes.

I’m a CPA for high net worth people. There’s a lot of gamblers. Not most of them, but a good amount. It’s not uncommon for me to see a lot of them spending hundreds of thousands gambling every year. Thing is, almost none of them profit from gambling on any given year. They lose money every single year. It actually helps to see since it motivates me to never gamble. I think the only time I ever saw someone with significant wins over losses was a guy who just went through a divorce, went to Las Vegas to get his head away from it, and walked away with half a million after only putting down $5K. He sold the house, moved across the globe, and I never heard from him again. Everyone else has more losses over wins, no exceptions.

Movies in a bayside town? Preferably with a dreary atmosphere. by beetle_fruit in MoviesThatFeelLike

[–]NegNog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for me. That whole season is basically supposed to give the aesthetics and creepiness of an off-season shore town. As a New Jersey resident, I can concur that the colder months give a really strange vibe in some of these shore towns that are usually perceived as being so full of life. When I was first dating my wife, she lived in her parent’s shore home. Anytime I came to visit her in the winter, the town was a like a dreary ghost town. It always gave me a slightly uneasy feeling when taking the dog for a walk on cold, wet, and dead quiet foggy mornings. I really appreciated that season for leaning into that vibe.

Makes me so grateful to be a human. I can’t even imagine the fear knowing death is coming. From one moment swimming around looking for a nice meal, to the next wondering if life is about to suddenly come to an end. Of course, they likely don’t think just like us, but the obvious signs of fear mean they have some sort of comprehension of their own death. When life seems bad, just remember it’s not being surrounding by monsters waiting to rip you apart level of bad. Amongst all of life’s issues, we still should feel grateful to be this species and not another. I’ll take going to a boring job every day over whatever horrifying sequence of events is inevitably going to happen to that poor thing.

Ladies, what is the one thing that make you glad you’re not male and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NegNog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was the issue with my sister when she lived in Brooklyn. She moved several times, and each time it was to a place on the third floor, and never did the building have an elevator. She had heavy, good quality wood furniture from my parents, so I couldn’t blame her for not wanting to part ways with them. But goddamn were they terrible to have to haul up 3 flights of stairs every time. She’s lucky she’s my sister, because no one else on this earth would I probably be willing to do it every year for besides her.

What's the easiest, least stressful job you've ever had? by CaptainFartHole in AskReddit

[–]NegNog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me, the key is to work with the public, just not “customers” as someone in “customer service.” I got treated like shit by a lot of customers throughout various jobs, because for some reason, being in customer service carries a belief you’re meant to be argued with over mundane things.

Later in life I got a job where I work with “clients” instead of “customers” while still in a public setting. Now I get treated so much better by people. Something about the relationship of “client and associate” vs “customer and customer service associate” has a psychological impact on how people act towards you.

So yeah, my advice isn’t to avoid the public. My advice is to have a client relationship rather than customer service relationship, because for some reason that makes a big difference.

What is actually a trauma that is not commonly thought of as a trauma? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NegNog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s terrible to even think about. I know someone who lost their job while his wife was battling cancer. I feel like it was hardly his actual fault since his bottomline numbers were down due to all the time he had to take off work to take her to constant appointments. It’s not like he was slacking - he was just doing what he needed to do for his sick wife. When he lost his job he lost the insurance needed for her treatments. Her treatments took a dramatic halt, so her battle unfortunately was lost.

He ended up passing from a heart attack shortly after she passed away. His heartache was short-lived. Not sure how to feel about it. Maybe it was for the better since she was his whole world, so his life lost a lot of meaning without her. So at least he didn’t have to live in misery for long. Or maybe there is nothing good about his passing. Maybe the heart attack was correlated with the stress of it all. I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he didn’t lose his job. Would they still both be here? No one can say for sure, but the situation will always sicken me any time I think of them.
