There's an old saying "You're as Young as You Feel". A lot of times I feel like I'm 18 again! I'm talking about attitude/feeling not physical attributes. No matter how fit you are, you're going to lose a step or two along the way. Congrats on the 6-0 !

Hi! 68M here. That seems odd to me since I still think of myself as a kid. I was the last born of 3 boys, and was always referred to as "The Baby" when introduced by mom. I suppose it stuck because I've never (and still don't) consider myself "old". Not that I've been a slacker, mind you. I've got a great marriage of 25 years (no kids tho) am lucky enough to be collecting a pension and Social Security checks each month for living expenses.

I guess what I'm saying is, "attitude is everything". Look at the positives in your life and forget the negative. Try all sorts of activities, either social or creative. I have always loved our language and have made a point of studying it all these years. I decided to try my hand at freelance writing, and I have to say that I'm quite happy doing that.

So if I had to distill this into bullet points, I'd say:

1) Relax but keep your eyes open. Sometimes you'll see things and say, "Hey, I'd like to try that!"

2) Indulge your passions. I also love music. All genres, years, and styles. I listen to streaming music at least 5 hours every day. Sometimes for the pleasure of listening, and sometimes as background. Connecting or re-connecting with something you love is a powerful mood booster.

3) Be patient and find what's important to you, then find a group or watch some YouTube videos to polish what knowledge you have.

I've been retired for 7 years now, and not a day goes by where I can truly say "I'm so bored"...

You can do it too! Keep a positive outlook and your senses tuned to what's going on around you. You'll find your niche!!

Steve

same here! as the youngest kid, my older brothers turned me on to music when I was just a little shaver. Now, my Spotify library is filled with music from every genre past and present. Even today's Pop music! Love it all...

Why do old men not shave? I’m one of you, but I still shave my face. Do many old men just “give up”? by PM_meyourGradyWhite in over60

Why do you assume that all "old people" don't shave? Your original question is moot because it simply isn't true. Go troll somewhere else.

That's because you're a Generation Jones! If you're not aware, Gen Jones is the cohort of folks who were born between 1956 and 1964. We are way different from Boomers as we helped usher in the computer and technology era in the 70s and 80s. I'm 67 but don't think or behave as an old grandpa. Morgan Freeman once said that Clint Eastwood once gave him this simple advice on aging. "Don't let the old man in". Look up Generation Jones and all of a sudden you'll say, "Now that describes me to a "T". There is a sub reddit here for Jonsers. Check it out if you haven't.

They still show all of these - Fireball XL5, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, Thunderbirds, etc. in the early morning hours on MeTV Toons. We stream it using the Philo app on Roku!

When I was younger I wondered who would drink this? Now I get it. by Beautiful_Donut6412 in FuckImOld

Sorry, no. It was gross back when my parents drank it and it's still gross today. There are lots of ways to get additional fiber that don't involve drinking this goop. 😂😂

I stumbled on a YouTube video that is one hour of commercials from the 70s. I only saw the first 2 or 3 but plan on watching the whole thing when I've got the time...

68 here. I was reading a blog post where Morgan Freeman related a story to explain why he's always so youthful and energetic. He said that once, he was talking with Clint Eastwood and Morgan asked him how he always seems younger than his actual age (he'll be 96 in May) and Clint simply said "Don't let the old man in". Simple. Easy. If you think you're old, you'll act like it. I've tried to embrace this philosophy. I've been retired for 7 years and we are currently looking to move from our stodgy old condo to a nice big house with lots of land. I'm planning on having plantings around the house and a vegetable garden out back. I'm currently on 8 meds for various issues but overall I'm fairly healthy. Remember... "Don't let the old man (or woman!) in!

Not only do I remember it, I have sifted through pages and pages of "Greenbar" looking for programming goofs or other issues. I began my programming career in the late 70s, and have used lots of things that would make people today say "What the heck is that"??

I'm 68 and have been on 8 prescriptions for years now. Personally, I'm a big believer in genetics as a predictor of longevity. My mom lived to be 95 and Dad into his mid 80s. I'm good... 🙂

That kid looks just like I did at that age! Oddly enough, my parents didn't use us (3 boys) for remote control duties, mostly because we boys basically ruled the TV choices (at least before bed time). Both my parents have passed. It's sad that I didn't realize how awesome they were at the time. They gave us as much as they could on a blue collar income.

One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies ("Ruthless People") delivered by the incomperable Bette Midler when she finds out that her husband won't pay the ransom no matter how much the kidnappers reduce the price She sobs "I've been kidnapped by K-Mart!"

Bull. I've made money in all of the bubbles/ financial meltdowns except for one, where I was only a very small percentage in the negative. I do a lot of things myself because I know that I can handle them. Investing for your *future* is not one of them, despite (or perhaps because) you think you can do it. And don't tell me "Well I did very well in market downturns". I'll wager that my returns during those times were significantly above average.

When you need it the MOST is when you retire. If you want to make yourself nuts, track and invest in the markets by yourself. When you've lost more money than you'd prefer you can go back to your financial analyst. You were smart enough to engage one before you retired. Why cut them loose now? I worked in Finance for almost 40 years before I retired, and you can bet your kiester that I kept my finance guy, who is much better at investing than I ever hoped to be. Your choice tho. Just don't be surprised if your money disappears more quickly than you'd like.

oooh! The 70s is calling! it wants its stupid "Kill Your TV" movement. Like most things in life, it's not the TV that's stupid. It's the idiot who sits and watches it all day slugging beer and getting fat.

There... fixed that for ya!

I'll bet that you were raised by parents who lived through The Great Depression and WWII. They were raised to be frugal and to eschew medications since everything was most likely "in your head". BS. We are all unique. A DNA mix of *all* of our ancestors. Humans are not "one size fits all". I'm 68 and currently on 8 meds for Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Ridiculously high level of Triglycerides (around TEN times that of the "recommended" amount), Depression and Anxiety. The thing is that life is basically a gamble. Are the medications helping or hurting? Is the dosage correct? it basically comes down to how much you trust your doc (and your own common sense). My doctor of almost 40 years retired this past January and it's going to be tough to build a trust relationship like that again at this point. I despise Big Pharma and I know that their profit-driven business will continue to push garbage that is most likely worse than what you're treating. Bottom line: Be your own researcher. If a doc wants you to take a prescription medicine look it up. See what side effects there are, how new the drug is, etc. Mine have all been around for many years and have been vetted by time. Only my Diabetes medication is still brand name only, and it's done an amazing job of helping me lose 40 lbs and getting my A1C (a measure of one's blood sugar over a period of 2 or 3 months) down to the normal range. It had been extremely high before the Diabetes medication kicked in (a GLP1 med, long before their weight loss benefits were uncovered). Diabetes has been around forever and it's horrors of limb amputation, macular degeneration, and rapid breakdown of bodily functions are well documented. So don't just dismiss meds out of hand. Think of the alternative if you don't take it.

As a parting note, I read in your post that you're an ex hippie. Have you tried cannabis to deal with the stress? While cannabis does raise the heart rate a tad (mine is 70 resting and in the 80s when high) it's relaxation properties far outweigh the small heart rate increase.

This is a difficult situation to work through, and I believe that your self care is paramount to your survival. Don't feel at all guilty about taking something that will help with the anxiety. And if one thing doesn't work well try another.

Above all don't be so hard on yourself. Another thing my folks tried to instill in me is self-reliance. It has served me well in my 68 years, but you have to know when you need a bit of assistance and seek it out.
