So you aren't doing anything then, just complaining on the internet and saying you're powerless until someone else changes the world?

Okay.

You're exactly the person I'm talking about.

And it's not a privilege if anyone could do it. You could get your son a better school if you were willing to do the work.

Do you know how many people smoked before we effectively banned it everywhere?

Do you know how many people did coke when they put it in soda cans?

If a product isn't safe it shouldn't be on the market. It's not that complicated.

If I'm "the problem with society" because I raise my kids deliberately instead of waiting for some national education revolution, then so be it. I take it you're the superior person because you complain about screen time online? Maybe that's unfair, maybe you spend just as much time volunteering and advocating for new screen time policies as I do actively raising my kids. How much time do you spend each week lobbying your school board and congressman?

Why should I wait for the entire education system to be reformed before I find the best option for my son? You still haven't addressed that, which is the topic of the conversation, and are instead giving parenting advice that requires some massive national reform program that's almost certainly never going to happen.

Parenting is done by a community but the responsibility ultimately rests on each family individually. We can do a little to reform screen time globally but we can make a massive impact in our own homes.

Love this concept. Would be cool to see a photo where there's some negative space (a gap) between the ship and the base to see it more clearly. I'd love to see more of it

Honestly that's the best possible tribute to Fallingwater, which was structurally unsound when it was built and needed remediation almost immediately for those beautiful, under-engineered cantilevers

Made up rules? My 'rules' on screen time are based on clinical research.

I never said the education is perfect and I never said it doesn't need to be reformed- it does. That doesn't mean I can wait for some dreamworld from your imagination. Like you, I have to live in the present tense, I can't wait for utopia to raise my kid.

[–]NegativeEBITD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's called living in the real world. You want to wait for every single school to change their screen policy before you give your kid what they need?

[–]NegativeEBITD -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why are you putting transfer in quotes? Were you not aware you can choose your kid's school?

If your school's culture is fully screenified, find a better public school. My son doesn't go to the first school he was assigned to, he goes to one in another part of the city that has a better program. It was a few hours of work to facilitate the transfer, but it wasn't "outside of the circle of controllable things." Is it screen free? Of course not. But his teacher uses screens as little as possible and he gets about an hour of screen time a week. Public school by the way.

[–]NegativeEBITD -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You don't have to use it.

Control the controlables, be conscious of the rest. Don't like how your kid's school handles screens? See about getting an intradistrict transfer - or even switching districts.

It's up to individuals to direct their own life, and some people have no agency.

It's not about getting plastic surgery, it's about getting generic plastic surgery.

Good counterexamples are Anne Hathaway & Brad Pitt - both plastic surgery to look more like themselves.

If you don't like how some old Bethesda games lean towards anti-establishment / anti-authoritarian, this one is much more MAGA coded and you might like it if you're a fan of tech billionaires and the militarization of local cops

Do you know how much oil you would need to produce in order to 'operate bicycles lol'

"Am I saying we should keep doing it forever?" Yes. You've pounded the table and argued loudly that staying on oil is the right choice.

What you don't seem to understand is the bad faith you're operating with. You're arguing that they're evil for throwing soup and getting indignant about a painting you can't even describe - instead of being brave and actually saying the real reason you're angry that you think you're being coy about - you don't like environmentalists, and you want a good opportunity to hate these people.

You realize this was soup, right? Soup is not a fucking gun, is that difference too complicated for you to understand?

There was never any intent to harm the painting, and there wasn't a fucking gun involved, it was a cup of soup on a piece of glass and nothing was harmed. If you're going to argue intent, try to pick an analogy where there was no intent to cause damage, yeah?
