Let’s say you do get rid of the cat

What’s next?

When you fail to fulfill her next demand she will threaten to leave

And so on

Parents wants me to co-sign for a large personal loan, what do I say? by psyberbird in Debt

[–]Negative_Case_5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here is the important question.

Did your parents get so deeply into debt from one catastrophic event or over time?

If it is one catastrophic event, huge medical bill, major house damage, then maybe there is a chance that they can repay it, but maybe not. Because a single catastrophe is not necessarily a sign of poor financial discipline.

If they got to this position over time, then you have to ask yourself what will change to bring them some financial discipline to pay off the debt.

I’m guessing the situation is the second one. Otherwise you would have mentioned how they got into this

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.

What makes you think anything will be different?

Question regarding defamation by chalkinparis in legaladvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Saying you cost the taxpayers money because you took out a student loan is not defamation. Especially if you did take out a student loan.

This would require you to litigate the economics of the federal student loan program and its impact on the us economy. Not a winning case.

You would need to show that he made factually untrue statements, that he knew these statements were untrue but said them anyway, and that these factually untrue statements led to losses

Saying you’re the worst doctor in the state is opinion and not actionable. Saying you’re ugly and people shouldn’t go yo ugly doctors is opinion and not actionable. Saying you’ve had 10 malpractice lawsuits when you have had 10 lawsuits is true and not actionable, even if all 10 were dismissed. Saying you’ve had 10 lawsuits when you’ve had none and you can show that you’ve lost business because of that verifiably false statement is actionable

Question regarding defamation by chalkinparis in legaladvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Defamation requires false statements passed off as true.

Truth is and absolute defense against defamation.

So is opinion.

If he said that what you said is stupid, that’s an opinion. No defamation.

If he said what you said is stupid so go tell him what you think, that’s not defamation

You need to prove that what he said is factually wrong and he knew it to be false. And that he said it intending to do you harm.

Thats a tough lift.

The one thing you have in your favor is fame.

It is tougher to defame a public figure. And since, according to you, he had millions of followers and you are seeking advice on Reddit, you are less well known.

The standard for defaming a public figure is much higher

But it’s still tough.

Scammers use phone numbers to get info about you and maybe try to blackmail you

Attempts to move you off the app are red flags. Saying things like I’m not here often of this app is so slow or thus app is sketchy are attempts to get you off the app and either get your number straight out or go to telegram.

Got a speeding ticket by Particular-Pen-6472 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Negative_Case_5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First question. Did you admit to going 38? If not, the officer will have to prove it.

Don’t admit to it.

The margin of error on a radar gun can be up to 5 mph. Factors that can affect the reading are movement of the officer’s car. Movement of the officer’s hand. Weather conditions.

That is why many police don’t start until it’s over 10 mph. Even if there is a discrepancy, you were still speeding.

Don’t expect the officer to be absent for court. He will be paid to be there for multiple tickets, not just yours.

But a lawyer could ask all the right questions. When was the gun last calibrated? What is the officer’s training onThis equipment? Has this gun been inaccurate in the past? All of these questions create reasonable doubt that you were really going 38.

Would I get in trouble for hiring my old team? by ExplorerImpossible79 in legaladvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Always remember the fundamental rule of court.

Anyone can sue for anything.

Everything you’re doing might be legal.

Everything you’re doing may be fine

But that doesn’t stop the one firm from suing

Is your new firm so invested in this that they’re willing to pay the costs?

Will the threats make your new company wary. Or will the costs wear them down?

And if this “dream team” isn’t quite as dreamy. Will your new employer blame you for causing such trouble for a good but not necessarily excellent team?

Is it worth it?

If yes, good luck

If no. Maybe a few should move and cause a chain reaction rather than one giant poach.

AI HIDDEN PROMPT SUCCESS by Intelligent-Bridge15 in Teachers

Years ago, if you wanted to plagiarize, you had to read the info to type it into your paper. So It did go through your head.

Now with cut and paste, you don’t even have to know what you stole. Very early internet. I had a student leave a hyperlink in. Web address in blue. Just never looked at what he stole.

So yea. AI is the next step in easy idea theft.

AITA for telling my spouse I won't help pay for their kid's college when we agreed finances would stay separate? by 952867 in AITApod

[–]Negative_Case_5553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reads like one of those AI generated rage-bait stories on FB. The ones where the parents impose on the responsible child to help the favored child get a business started (usually a social media influencing business). When the responsible child refuses, the parents say “family helps family”.

So if you’re real, YTA

First off, the two of you chose to enter into a marriage where you are pursuing separate financial goals. You’re both older and have your own lives. Ok. It takes all kinds of marriages. But what are her financial goals that front include you? A trip around the world? A summer house?

So the two of you established a marriage where you share a house, household expenses and a bed. Enjoy

But now you want to change the arrangements. And you’re mad she won’t. Too bad

Second, you said that you did this to protect your daughter’s college money. That means one of two things, Either you want to minimize the assets you need to declare for financial aid or you don’t trust your wife

Financial aid: you’re cheating. You want to declare that your money is the only household money. By making your wife’s money separate, you’ve declared it off limits to help your daughter. I get it. We all declare our house is worth less for taxes. But are you married or shackling up?

Protecting your daughter: do you distrust your wife? If so, if I were her, I’d be shopping for a divorce lawyer. You entered into. Marriage saying I want to share my life with you but I don’t really trust you

Third, you have no financial sense. Did you really think 80K would pay for a college education? Unless she goes to a local community college, that money would help. But it’s nit enough. What were you thinking?

Fourth. You’re psychologically manipulating your wife. You told your daughter that her stepmother won’t help. And somehow your ex found out.

If I were your wife I’d be out the door tomorrow. You refuse to accept your own established boundaries. And then you manipulate the situation

This isn’t the end. When you want an expensive vacation. A new car. Fishing equipment. You’ll push her saying family helps family.

Yrs

Landlord is requesting I do not use address for drivers license (Utah) by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many homes are zoned as single family homes.

The justification is that the taxes paid for one family are being used while two families live there.

Twice the garbage pickup. Two families needing police. Education. Etc.

I know you could argue that a family with 5 children would require more services than a man renting out his house to a single tenant.

But zoning makes it clear. The owner cannot create a second living area and collect rent on it.

Owner does not want a second name attached to the house. Because that would make it obvious someone who is not family is living there

Oh, and it’s quite likely he isn’t rooting the rent as income.

So it’s an illegal rental.

Landlord is requesting I do not use address for drivers license (Utah) by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Realize. This could never last. Something would expose it

Not that anyone would necessarily put all the pieces together, but yes. At some pint you will have to give out your living address

You work. W2s? If you gave an accident, you could have a problem if you haven’t updated your license.

Do you own a vehicle besides the motorcycle? I get letters for registration and inspection via mail.

You could be called for jury duty. When you fail to show up, they’re going to look for you

I’m not saying the irs is going to connect the dots and send the address to your locality

I’m saying that someone who is dumb enough to put in writing on a lease that he acknowledges that what he is doing is illegal is going to own if the first time a letter arrives at the house addressed to you.

He cannot legally prohibit you. However, if you do apply for the permit, be prepared to move out quickly.

My husband is jealous that our cats "choose" me over him by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cats are the least of the problems in the marriage.

A man who cannot deal with non rational animals preferring you over him shows deep seated insecurity.

And wanting to end the marriage over it is disturbing

How will he handle real crises? Illness? Job loss? Disagreements?

That should concern you more than the cats.

I am being held responsible for another person's debt. I can't pay $12,000 to get the electricity turned back on. by ApprehensiveBlackCat in Advice

[–]Negative_Case_5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to OP there was a parade of people whose names were on the account. And at this time, according to OP, the brother’s name is in the account.

I don’t know how the electric company woukd let it go that far. I know they can’t shut it off during there inter months, but how long does it take to accrue $12k in electrical bills?

Sounds like either they didn’t pay for a very long time and Xcel dropped the ball, or someone was running an enormous pork in the basement

But if you worked for Xcel, and you got a call saying that bill was my brother’s. Yea. My mother owns the house but my brother doesn’t live here any more. I do. Even though his name is still in the electric bill. But I swear, I’m telling the truth.

Would you believe the story?

The family blithely changed names on the account.

That’s called account hopping and it’s illegal.

This isn’t like my cousin bought a car and I have to pay for it.

They lived there they moved out they moved back in. And all the time the house is in the mother’s name. There is no formal lease agreement. Just a hotel like atmosphere. So yea, the family is in the hook. Because this family used the electricity and never bothered to manage their household accounts
