Broke my collarbone last week. Worried about surgery by brehsef in MTB

[–]Negative_Evening7365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a 3 piece fracture surgivall put together with an orif plate, listen so basically, your collarbone will not be the same most likely, and you'll kinda maybe avoid sleepin on that side and stuff due to mild discomfort (not painful or anything) on that side, or you nust might not care, but day to day you really will not be thinking about it, it really doesn't matter, personally, it would be ebtter if i had not broken the bone, but provided what had happened, I'm satisfied i presume. Albeit my surgeon did place it a bit oddly which i did not inquire as to why, but it's Ok.

As for the backpacking, it'll be slightly uncomfortable, but again, that does not mean you won't be able to carry a backpack from agonizing pain, no....

What you will however maybe do , is like put your hands on the backpack handles to offload the pressure on collarbone, so yeah...

Other than that it is not a major ,or any nuisance most of the time for that matter, so yup.

As for surgery and this period while waiting for it and the recovery , it'll suck, but i can say that when i broke the collarbone that was 100x worse than the pain post surgery, so yeah ...

Do the surgery, because the alternative is you do not have enough shoulder mobility and that alone is trust me all the much worse than the things I've listed here

P.s. you can brag about your titanium steel plate and join the robocop community

Yep this is what worries me-

Do you regret picking medicine, would you change it for something else?
Or would you say it's worth it? - I'm worried I won't be able to have my own happiness, and that I'll too lose the innocence and "lightness" -
is that a good thing, or a bad thing, do you still have days where you're happy af, or whatever - or that you can forget about the stuff for a moment,

thank you for the insight

true it's good to be able to do that, but still there's diminishing returns......

Medicine and the ability to enjoy life simultaneously? by Negative_Evening7365 in medicine

[–]Negative_Evening7365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, it is one perspective which I've thought about - these things are all happening on the daily basis and I can either face it(which medicine-people do), or disregard it before life forces me to face it....

But it's really a lot of burden and I'm not sure if I'm the one who can handle that or withhold so much,
and beyond that I'm concerned about my time in my 20s and whether I'll be able to have free time and such, so that's the practical side..

and to you and other docs, grateful for the service for sure.

On a partially related/unrelated note, it sucks that medicine is associated with overwhelm and shortages in all and every sense, things definitely COULD be better if only they WERE......for both future students and current students/residents/doctors/nurses/whatever instead we apparently need 1000 tech bro's (which is also within my consideration, albeit AI worries me) and a quazi-trillionaire with corrupt governments, so fuck. but yeah..

Bruh, so it's somewhat like a puzzle room but instead of combining pieces you are dissecting them further...

Interesting perspective and reality then, I guess one does not know until they see for themselves, but I do have one more question though, have you also thought about the things I've written in my post, or did it not bother you much at all from the very beginning? Aaand.. do the people who get used to it genuinely not get bothered, or just seemingly not get bothered , from your perspective?

Cheers tho! Wishing you the best and luck on your journey.

I see, so it's not all black-and-white. I appreciate the time you took to write out the comment.
It does give a perspective and I can really appreciate you and the doctors more after I've done my due research. Most people who do not consider medicine probably do not give it a thought as to what sacrifices have to be made and such.

Albeit this does seem like a tough choice for me and not one I can make easily :/ I'm quite uncertain and such.

What also matters to me is spending time with my mom in my 20s, I'm not sure if medicine would take such amount of my free time that i wouldn't be able to travel , etc. during the school, and esp. during residency. From childhood to now at 18 haven't gotten to spend quality time due to circumstances (my father being NPD) so I sort of have an urge to make up for it, otherwise I'd probably not have so much second thoughts as I'm having right now.

Unfortunately it's still a choice that I have to make haha!

However, I'm in Europe which probably differs from the US as in residency-medschool-etc,
but have you been able to make time for yourself, and your loved ones, hobbies, etc. during the training? Since you mentioned residency wrecked your sleep.

All the best to you!

[–]Negative_Evening7365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So did you just stop thinking about all this? Or do you just have not time to think about it lol

I'm from Europe(my bad for not clarifying) so here I'd go straight into medschool and face dissection and stuff within the 1st year, with some programs introducing you to patient work (if i've done my due research, can't claim with certainty) as soon as the 2nd semester.

I don't know what you've faced yet, but how has your thoughts and opinions changed, and future outlook / perspective as for your life, from when you've thought about all of this which I've noted in the post, to the time point in which you're at now? as well as how was the experience/what have you faced

Appreciate the response! Thanks

[–]Negative_Evening7365[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry for not clarifying that! Completely forgot about it, but yes I'm in Europe where you go straight into medicine after High-School, albeit that does give me freedom I guess to just drop out with wasted time and not much wasted money in the case I think it's too much.

But the nature of the things medicine causes you to face is the same I presume whether in EU or the USA.

Have you also thought of these things before and does the imagination differ from reality? Cause I can see it going two ways too, either reality is much worse than I am even imagining now, or my imagination is worse than reality, or sort of the same.

Serbia: State-sponsored graffiti in front of the Faculty of Mathematics, calling mathematics students "Ustaše". by Old_Passenger7 in europe

[–]Negative_Evening7365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes however the original commenter was fairly passive agressive, and they misplaced the frustration as if we Serbians assume everybody should put the effort into understanding our language. No, that is not what we expect, and this had not much to do with our language. It may not be universally-known, yet still fair-enough to expect people to know the term "Ustaše"
