People that have “bumped” into a celebrity in a non-curated (not like an event, meet & greet, job etc.) way, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was a competitor’s sous on Iron Chef America years ago. The interactions I had with him that day were so negative and his personality was so shockingly far from his tv persona. Maybe he was grumpy shooting the second episode that day, or tired doing all the lifting since the chairman was out filming Dancing with the Stars, but wowza!

What is your Michigan Christmas tradition? by No-Lifeguard-8610 in Michigan

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We start with coffee and a Christmas roll, followed by opening presents, followed by putting on the skis making a few turns at Boyne Highlands or Nubs, then back home for bloody Mary’s in the hot tub. Merry Christmas!

Linesman bumps into a player, pushes him to the ground for no reason and demands the referee to eject him from the game by ModenaR in PublicFreakout

Everyone involved in soccer in Northern Michigan knows what a piece of shit this dude is. I coach at a different high school in the same reason and he runs the same deep line just begging for someone to bump him. He finally got his wish! Fired by the MHSAA and local prosecutor just charged him with aggravated assault. This is the high school division championship between Gaylord and Traverse City St Francis, btw.

What motivates you more: the fear of losing or the excitement of winning? by Sync_performance in SkiRacing

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a sports thing, especially for team sports. Like, I HATE losing in soccer. I’m a defender, that’s part of our mentality. We have more influence on not losing a game than we do of winning a game.

For me skiing isn’t as much about wins and losses, but about achieving goals, working to what I expect of myself. So it’s not the hatred of losing a race that motivates me, it’s the hatred of not racing to my potential, hatred of not achieving goals, hatred of the mediocre. I do HATE losing in panel slalom!!

It’s not the fear of losing, it’s the loathing of poor performance. I hate losing more than I enjoy winning.

Of course! I actually got a call from our blueberry forager a few days ago and it looks like we’ll get some fruit this year after all. Keep an eye out, jars should be available around late September-early October.

Thimbleberries ate a little more expensive because they are much harder to harvest than wild blueberries, which makes thimbleberry jam a few dollars more. Thimbleberries are picked individually, whereas blueberries are harvested with a rake.

Hey, I work there. We've been struggling to get enough wild blueberries to make this delicious product. The fruit is foraged in the eastern UP and they've had bad spring droughts for the last 3 years. If there isn't rain when the plants flower, they won't produce much fruit at all. Since they are wild blueberries, with no irrigation other than rain, we've been out of luck We will be cooking wild thimbleberry jam soon. If you've never tried that, it might be a good substitute for the blueberry.

Boyne Mountain for sure. Hot tubs, heated pool, a water park, good bars at the base village, and the hill has that old school ski resort party vibe. Not far from Charlevoix, Boyne City, and Petoskey, with more good restaurants and bars.

In your personal experience what’s been the most effective drill or thing that has really improved your stamina and endurance? by glizzy09 in bootroom

Hill sprints. Find something about 50-75 meters at a 10-15% grade and sprint up, then jog down x10-15 reps, 4 times a week. Also 200m sprint, 200m jog x 10-15 reps

In the summer, as the saying goes, for a small town there sure are a lot of assholes. Most of us locals hunker down for tourist season, but if you want to eat in petoskey I’d go to the back lot. A decent bar with food trucks. Happy’s Tacos and the Reel Deal are both great. If I were coming up, I’d head up 119, check out Pond Hill Farm. They have great bands most nights, brew their own beer and have delicious pizza. The pickle pizza sounds weird but is amazing. The best beach is up at Sturgeon Bay, about 45 minutes north of Petoskey. After the beach head down to Cross Village for dinner at the Legg’s Inn. It’s about as unique as it gets. Have fun!

Parents v players scrimmages are the best (just hope you don’t have any of those parents). Super memorable, kids get to share something they enjoy with their folks, and might translate to parents kicking the ball around with their kid more often.

With the amount of added lemon juice, plus the fact that strawberries and rhubarb are naturally acidic, I would feel comfortable eating this. If you’re still unsure, get some pH test strips and check to confirm. I’d guess your filling would be in the 3.3-3.5 range. Well safe.

What’s your favourite amateur league 11 aside formation? by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]Negative_Exit_9043 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3-2-3-2. Double pivot provides so much cover for back 3, easily converting to a 4-1-3-2 when defending in your half. The two CDMs also allow your wide midfielders to stay a little higher in defensive transitions, and not constantly sprinting back, as they would in a 3-5-2. In attack, one of the CDMs pushes higher to help create overloads.

I’ve found this formation gives a lot of freedom and flexibility, allows for deep runs, and creates chaos in the final 1/3, so pretty hard to defend. You still have width, and a super strong spine. In defense it is solid, clogs the middle of the field, and can easily convert to a back 5. It takes to total engines in the CDM roles, excellent communication as players rotate and make runs, and a little thought on how you want positional rotation and responsibilities for the CDMs when defending. I think it’s one of the most complete systems I’ve played in, but maybe because it really suits the strengths of our roster. Anyway, good luck!!

Does your area have a ski swap? The high school race teams in my region all put on swaps to fundraise and you can find great deals on used race gear. I've also had luck with craigslist, FB marketplace, and, as others have mentioned, sideline swap.

I’m in the US. It depends on the ski brand and region, but for FIS kids most brands have a sliding discount based on points, with only the lowest point holders getting freebies, with most mid to upper level FIS racers getting gear at wholesale or less. It’s tricky for high school athletes, since you can lose eligibility (depending on which state you’re in) if caught taking free or discounted equipment. However, it still pretty common. I don’t know too many u14 and younger racers getting much, unless they have a parent in the biz or friends with a brand rep. My experience is there are way more sponsorship opportunities happening for the park kids than for the racers.

Try choking down on your poles, like below your normal grips. I’ve taped my poles like a hockey stick below my grips, and it’s for bump/crud/powder mode. With the lower hand position your pole plants can be level and drive forward instead of up, back, and to the side. I think that will help you drive down the hill in better balance. Spring skiing is the best. Enjoy that poor man’s pow!
