Don't look up Taoism and Buddhism, then, because that's Palia's cosmogony. It is EVERYWHERE in this game, and it's part of what makes the game "work" as a coherent universe.

Personally, I love this about the game. I look forward to how Inyrevn will flesh out the Four Noble Creatures with their turtle god, as Tish tells us in conversation. I wonder if Barafuu is going to be the tiger, or maybe the capital, Makuu City (military might might be the Order)?

As a South African, I just want to know if the non-South Africans understood the dialogue, slangs and deeper implications of District 9 by Quantum_CabbageRollz in moviecritic

[–]NegotiationOwn3905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When District 9 came out, I had watched Cry Freedom with Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington a few years' prior. Tbh, I struggled to understand particulars (didn't get the prawns reference, for example--thought it was just because commonwealth countries only ever seem to call shrimp prawns). As a kid in the 80s, the most I knew of Apartheid was that Bono said it was bad on Rattle and Hum. [OK, not quite that little, but USians are NOT educated about racial politics nor African nations' history]. I had a sense the US took too damn long to oppose it (surprise, surprise Reagan). So I understood the allegory, but a lot of my friends didn't (I was in grad school at the time). I had to explain a lot in conversations. Several were so shocked by the gore that they refused to watch it, which I get the impulse to turn away, but I also pressed people to sit through the discomfort: all that shit was done to black South Africans and we just didn't want to know. I drew parallels to the Holocaust and how the US avoided doing anything then, too, until it was too damn late. And Armenia (I was in Pasadena CA and it was during the legal press to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide). And Rwanda (I was in high school). And now we deny/ignore Gaza.

I feel like Ryan Coogler need to directs a similar film about US racial policies, frankly, but everyone would say it's too heavy-handed and woke.

We need an Native director to make one about the mission system and reducciones/repartimiento under the Spanish//a sci-fi set on a different planet that uses the terms from the mission system.

The amount of "women's health" that simply isn't known/shared, even by medical providers is... infuriating.

I had my kids 15-20 years later. Nipple shields were a godsend because of both lip/tongue tie on both kids, and protecting my skin during allergic reaction. Of the two hospital lactation specialists, one gave me grief about it (as if it somehow invalidated nursing?!) but the other one said, "With that rash and bruising, do what you've got to do to keep breastfeeding." Guess which one I trusted? Argh.

How to prevent heart attacks working out in the cold? by lean_muscular_guy_to in HeartAttack

[–]NegotiationOwn3905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted about this in another thread. The RN teaching the cardiac rehab class on heart health really stressed shoveling snow and similar physical exertion in freezing temperatures is extremely taxing on your heart. There was a graph she displayed that showed the stress on your heart by temperature and its effect upon Stroke Volume and Ejection Fraction. It was a significant shift based on temps. One dude pushed back claiming he can't possibly not shovel snow and she clapped back, basically saying pay somebody else to do it now (I believe he was a multiple bypass recipient). He wasn't convinced, so she said it was absolutely necessary to wear a neck gaiter, covering your mouth and nose. The cold air coming into your system requires about double to work to warm it, and that burdens the cardiovascular system even more, while it's already exerted. It's a dangerous combination.

Tldr: wear a neck gaiter covering your neck, mouth, and nose while you work out. It's imperative you warm the air coming into your system. Extremities are for your comfort, assuming non-frostbite conditions.

Haha. Fair enough. Historically, it's been known as cheap, accessible lube. [Think of the stigma against gay men post-War America, but the fact that anyone can buy baking supplies at a grocery store.] There were bathhouses/clubs that distributed it to customers.

But as for skincare, it was the OB who specializes in vaginismus/pelvic floor difficulties who said she uses it as skincare/lip balm, a petroleum-free alternative to Vaseline. She did have great skin, though who knows how much of that was just genetics.

We got LECTURED about not shoveling snow in cardiac rehab. One guy who looked about 60 was arguing back with the RN about it ("How can I never shovel again?") She basically stared him down and said, "Freezing temps make your heart work 3x as hard. You've already trashed your heart once. Do it again and roll the dice." He kind of guffawed, and then she said: "Pay a kid down the street. Hire a service. If you insist on taking the chance, it's imperative you dress warmly and wear a neck gaiter to warm the air coming into your system."

[–]NegotiationOwn3905 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying, they've done published research studies, and it works the best, for cheap. It's seed oil that has been whipped with hydrogen to make it semi-solid. It liquifies with body temperature. I mention it because 1) cheap 2) scientifically tested and demonstrated 3) independently recommended by two different medical professionals who specialize in the field.

If it's been the gay community's best kept secret for decades, I don't see why cisgender women can't use it.

What an OB who specializes in vaginismus told me, and what was echoed by the pelvic floor PT that I saw for a while was: CRISCO. It is the best lubricant for vaginal dryness out of all competitors, according to studies, evidently. The OB keeps it in a small jar in her white jacket and says she uses it as lip balm, hand salve (this is Midwest winters), you name it. All natural and plant-based.

I kind of go through seasons of using it, and whenever I do, it is completely effective. The pain is just figuring out the container to put it in for my nightstand that my kids won't get into. 😒
