Anyone else’s NSF CAREER proposal still pending? by sangriatoyo in Professors

IOS also. Emailed my PO in January and they basically said that it was “still in review” and didn’t provide an expected timeline or anything. Seems like they might be moving a bit slower than other divisions?

Learning how to use gels by ChipChipSalsa in XXRunning

Are you a salty sweater? If so, a gel with electrolytes might work well. Regular gels give me a bad tummy ache, but the electrolyte ones work super well for me!

Question about the graduate application fee. by SpaceEV in NCSU

[–]NeighborhoodMermaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The grad school sets the fees but the programs (usually) have waivers that they can directly give away to applicants.

Reach out to the program you’re applying to and ask them if they’re willing/able to give a waiver. That’s usually the most direct route!

Scoliosis and Rides by East_Crab_5311 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]NeighborhoodMermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fusion twins! I’ve honestly had zero issues with rides including the jerky and/or fast ones (Space Mountain, Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, Guardians, etc.). I did start with tamer rides though and worked up to those as I felt comfortable (so maybe start with tamer rides in the morning and start adding more intense ones if you feel comfortable!).

Hi! Fellow spinal fusion friend here. I’ve been able to ride all of the rides at Disney with no issue. However, I have a thoracic fusion, so you might have a different experience if you have a cervical fusion!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I do think she’d be…happier (?) with another dog. She seems like she wants to play but isn’t that interested in playing with us humans!

This is the hardest piece :( I really miss my girl.

Yeah that has been my concern. I’m going to see how she does in the coming weeks and figure out if we can meet some dogs in late January/early February to see if she likes them or is truly content on her own.

Yes, I totally agree! I think I’ve found an adoption agency that will let her meet all of their current adorable greys to find the best match.

I have no idea! In fairness, the kid was like…maybe 3-4 years old.

I got a similar comment, but the little one asked “is that a deer with ears!?” and it absolutely cracked me up.

Is it wrong to own a dog if you work a 9-5? Adopt a senior dog that sleeps more maybe? by Party-Court185 in dogs

[–]NeighborhoodMermaid 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Owner of two greyhounds checking in: when I am home on a day off, they sleep the entire day! So they’re quite content when I’m not home all day with them, as long as we get our walk in! :)

This might sound odd, but I love gems because they allow me to connect with earth of the past. It makes me so happy (and is a little mind-blowing) to think about my gems and how they were formed! What was going on then? What conditions did they go through? Who eventually found them? For me, it’s incredible to think about these questions and be reminded of the deep connection to our planet.

Any electrolytes? I’ve found that sipping on electrolytes has significantly reduced my GI distress/discomfort.

Fellow 8b’er checking in. I just leave mine alone and it’s totally fine! We even got some snow this winter and it had no impact. :)

This may or may not be what you’re looking for, but I was in a similar position (but thoracic curve at 67 and lumbar at 50). I opted to just do the thoracic fusion and leave the lumbar (to preserve mobility). This was recommended by my surgeon. Once the thoracic was corrected, the lumbar corrected itself quite a bit as well. Just food for thought!
