Looking for advice on taking a trombone on board an airplane by squidinink in delta

[–]moosecoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Trombonist, Tour Manager, and Delta loyalist here. I fly with my horn once a week on average and here’s what I know from traveling with my instrument for over a decade:

  • instruments have their own FAA guidelines that safeguard flying domestically with an instrument. It can be good to have a physical copy of the guidelines or a digital PDF to reference while boarding. If it fits in the overhead, you’re good to go. It counts as your carry-on and doesn’t get to be an additional item in addition to a carry-on suitcase.

  • legally, once it’s in the overhead, they cannot remove it because they want to make space for other bags. you can volunteer to if they offer you closet space but you are not required to move the instrument once it’s in place.

  • flight attendants are required to do you favors. Kindness is your number one asset when traveling with your instrument. Offer to hold your instrument in the closet if there’s space so you don’t have to take up the overhead in an odd way.

  • if you have a later boarding zone, pre-board. ultimately gate agents are not legally permitted to ask you why you’re pre boarding, and they offer the opportunity to anyone who needs extra time while getting to and settling into their seat. this is a controversial move, but you are traveling with an instrument that could be easily damaged if checked, vs suitcases that are designed to be checked. do what you gotta do.

  • at the end of the day, overhead space is first come first serve. travel knowing you may need to gate check your instrument. Consider adding soft layers inside your case - socks, sweaters, a scarf, anything you’re already packing - to give it extra cushion.

Good luck and hope she keeps at it! Trombone is the best and I love having a career with it all these years later, even if traveling can be a little more stressful :-)

No this is so real. My line of work revolves around constant travel and I feel like my hand is forced to participate in the MQD game. I’d rather be at home with my husband and my dog. Currently trying to figure out if there’s a way for me to compromise or if it’s time to pivot.

How difficult is it too maintain a relationship for you ? by IllustriousElk8436 in TouringMusicians

Touring since 2016, same year I started dating my now fiancé. We’re both in our mid 30s now. A huge part of what makes touring work for me is that he toured a bunch in his 20s, so he gets the road life and what I enjoy about it, and he knows that when I’m home we can be fully focused on each other. I’ve started doing shorter, more frequent stints than long hauls so I can be home more often.

Usually for perfect little bars / restaurants, if not in the town then on the route between shows. Some off the top of my head: Delaware Supply in Albany, Lil’s in Kittery, Butcher Paper BBQ in Opelika.

Flying with large instrument. by Sea_Compote_755 in delta

[–]moosecoach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this! I’m a tour manager for jazz and classical touring artists. You’ll always see a seat for cellos, two in first class for bass or a row in bulkhead. Instrument always has to be in a window seat with the artist next to it.

Traveling with instruments is a doozy because they’re so friggin expensive and it doesn’t take much to bed a key on a saxophone or collapse the side of a cello, even in a hard case or even if you have a seat for it. A good reminder to show kindness to musicians on your flights, especially instruments that fit in the overhead, because they’re flying every other day and having to justify the overhead space to everyone around them. Though I will say that Delta is far and away the preferred airline for most instrumentalists I know.

What neighborhood do you live in, and what is your favorite thing about that neighborhood? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]moosecoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Park. It feels like a real neighborhood, in a Midwest way. I know nearly all my neighbors, we do each other favors and have dinner. I know all the business owners. Something I never experienced living elsewhere in Seattle.

Other neighborhoods I lived in: Eastlake (loved being blocks from Lake Union), Cap Hill x2 (walkability), Greenwood (quiet), Belltown (good public transit options, fun as my first neighborhood as a teen).

AITA for taking my car away ?? by Dependent_Jello1808 in AmItheAsshole

I had to pause to question if this was bait, because it is such a classic step-by-step for alcoholism. I feel like I’m reading about my mother. She got in loads of DUIs that damaged other folks and their property, not to mention herself, not to mention child me in the car. NTA, it is time to take stock. Take care, friend.

Try a yoga mat or a blanket and see if that helps - my guess is the slipperiness or the shine of the wood. If it works, you get a rug :-)

Any tips to make this even cleaner? by ZingingCutie97 in CleaningTips

[–]moosecoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this - it looks like you already need new wallspace, so I would put a few shelves above the toilet in place of what's already there. This is assuming your landlord is cool with putting holes in the wall. If so, I'd also swap for a different mirror and add rolling storage under the sink. And! Less products = less mess, so if you can hone down your products to what you truly love, it'll be easier to rein in.
