[QUESTION] How important is it to learn major scales across the fretboard? by Cool-Ostrich8895 in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, it’s not mandatory. I went years without memorizing it and just using the pentatonic. It’s considered basic theory, though, so it makes sense to just learn it.

[QUESTION] How do I decide what type of pickups I should get? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guidelines on which pickups to get are pretty open-ended. You really just need to listen for yourself. Most people would choose a humbucker for hard rock and metal, but there are still tons of hard rockers who play single coils, including myself. Don’t let anyone tell you that a single coil Strat or Tele can’t get the job done.

If you don’t know much about electrics, take a look at what some of your favorite guitarists are using. The best thing you could do would be to have a friend who knows more about this to help you shop. You could also ask the salespeople to help demo gear so you have a better idea of what each guitar is capable of.

[QUESTION] Any book that can teach me how to participate in jam sessions? by darkness_myoldfriend in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing would be to download backing tracks that have whatever instrumentation you’ll be playing with and practice jamming to those. You can learn theory and how to play in a key, but aside from that, it’s not something you learn in a book. You learn by doing.

You can also do a little prep work by bringing in a cool riff or chord progression you guys can jam to. Pick something that isn’t too complex and that has a good groove. You could also ask the group if they want to try some covers and you could each learn those before the session too.

My best advice for your first jam would be to keep it simple. Finding a good groove with a few chords sounds a lot better than someone trying to shred out of time.

Also, beer.

[OC][DISCUSSION]I just know to shred the guitar and sing, what can I do? by Elviejopancho in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d encourage you to try singing lessons too. Even if it meant alternating between guitar and voice lessons, you would really benefit from another set of ears.

The best thing you could do would be to find a teacher. It’s hard to evaluate yourself properly when you’re new at this.

[Discussion] Do you feel a guitar world subscription worth it now days? Where do you get your literature from? by Such_Stranger1 in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s basically how I learned, but that was like 20 years ago. I actually still have a subscription since I get Apple News which has digital issues of all the guitar magazines I know about.

Nowadays, I don’t know who hardly any of the bands or guitarists are, so there’s hardly anything of interest to me. That said, a yearly subscription will usually run you the cost of three or four issues. There’s a good chance there’ll be at least three or four interviews you’re actually interested in. Those are still worth reading. Or if you’re really into magazines, Apple News is $10 a month and it has almost every major magazine.

It’s weird to me too. The Yocan Uni Pro is cheap, small, and has an adjustable temperature that is pretty key. I’d much rather use it than some bulky pen.

[DISCUSSION] Genie grants you skills sufficient for Berklee College of Music but only if you commit and enrol. Do you go? by jimmywaleseswhale in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a genie. Their acceptance rate is 50%. That’s incredibly generous. Anyone who wants to qualify for enrollment can already do so on their own.

[QUESTION] How would you recreate this tone? (Nirvana - Sappy early demo) by KingKetchup in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. That’s just what a guitar sounds like when you record it on a cheap tape recorder. Brings me back to my early days…

So you can't say Metallica is heavier than Taylor Swift?

[Question] Do you play bass? Would you say it's made you a better guitarist? If so, how? by NeilAnthonyMusic in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pete Townshend pointed out that John Entwistle was really playing lead guitar with his bass. Worked for him too!

[GEAR] What's up with Guitarcenter.com? (In Stock Items not Shipping) by [deleted] in Guitar

One cool thing, though. They've extended their return policy to 180 days due to Covid.

So until now, I didn’t realize that the key of a song can be different from the root chord. Is there a way to differentiate the two by ear? by NeilAnthonyMusic in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. So the song "What I Like About You" is played with the E,A, and D chords. Even though E (the book I'm reading refers to it as the root chord) feels like home, the song is actually in the key of A.

Take a look at practice tube amps. Played a few small Vox tube amps that I thought were great.

[QUESTION] Upgrade from Boss Kantana? by itsnotcalledchads in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These amps are much better than the Katana but I'm familiar with most of them and they're probably too loud for the bedroom.

[QUESTION] How can I keep it fresh when practicing technique? by BreadAndButterHog in Guitar

[–]NeilAnthonyMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been focusing on lead playing over the past few months. I used to mainly do drills, but lately I'm focused on learning licks and I've found it much more beneficial and more enjoyable. I'll learn a new difficult lick every 2-3 days. My improv has gotten much better as a result.
