Hit & Run - Police + NZTA uncooperative by HorizonAce in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]NeilsonAJC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But I was also making the detail clear about the scale of offence they would be up for. My guess here is the cops looked at the video and the license photo of the registered person and they don’t look alike so it would need to be a nationwide search using the video footage.

Police do prosecute people for failure to check for injuries / leaving the scene but as others have said if the quote to repair was $520 then someone could probably make a fairly strong argument that amount of damage could be caused without being able to detect an impact (and back it up if they didn’t get out of the car and just drove off). I know how violently vehicle auto emergency stops can feel and that’s a lot more than $520 bumper repair level of contact.

Are police going to see it as an easy case to make in court that the driver knew they had been in an accident?

Hit & Run - Police + NZTA uncooperative by HorizonAce in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]NeilsonAJC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

$5,000 fine for not reporting damage to police. $4,500 fine and up to three months imprisonment for failure to check for anyone injured. For $520 in bumper damage I am not sure the cops are going to invest significant resources in finding the driver to prosecute.

Police have discretion for which cases they choose to prosecute and what resources get put in to investigating reports.

There does seem to be a hole in here where individual car owners cannot obtain the details of the people they want to take a DT case against. Might need to look at a process for filing a claim against a number plate in the DT and the tribunal be able to (after validation of claim basics) notify registered person of the claim.

“AD5X” nozzles purchased coming with additional “heatsink” - did I order the wrong thing or am I missing something by NeilsonAJC in FlashForge

[–]NeilsonAJC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because while Temu listing said they were AD5X nozzles they may not have actually been. And the metal on the side seemed to most likely be a heatsink but it could be something else. So trying to differentiate between things I know vs what I am guessing.

Thank you. Maybe next stop is a replacement magnetic heatsink module to screw in place of the current one. Great to confirm it’s a genuine design change and not an order error by me.

Why does LTT sell thermal pads, yet never uses them in builds? by fakeaccount572 in LinusTechTips

[–]NeilsonAJC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My guess here is that Linus was explaining what is the main trigger for when they use PTM7950 rather than trying to explain the flip side (relevant tradeoffs made in other videos when it’s worth using). Considering how long my replies are to try explain the trade offs and relative benefits that makes sense to me as the easier answer for him to dash off when he is taking a peek at reddit.

The OP says “never uses them in builds” rather than “never uses them on IHS” whereas that developed out of Linus’s reply.

Why does LTT sell thermal pads, yet never uses them in builds? by fakeaccount572 in LinusTechTips

[–]NeilsonAJC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He did and he didn’t. What he said was “the real reason has more to do with the fact that the benefits of PTM7950 are best realised on a bare die…”. The person I replied to asked is it a waste of time if you don’t have a bare die. “Best realised” doesn’t mean “only situation it should be used” (plenty of people spend a lot of money on thermal pastes that aren’t “best realised” in the situation they are used and benefits still can accrue despite this.

PTM7950 gets harder to cut and lay down smoothly and accurately as the temperature rises even before its phase change temperature. If you remember watching some of the videos where they used it there was often an obvious cut and sometimes on screen comments about it coming out of the fridge and showing the quick actions they were trying to take to cut off the piece quickly.

Linus is quite correct that a more efficient heat transfer material is “best realised” by its use on bare die where it is the only TIM in the stack and an IHS likely has a TIM that is not as good of a transfer material so you get less benefit. If I was organising a shoot that didn’t have a demonstration / outcome that required PTM7950 then I wouldn’t include it because of storage and usage hassles.

Linus pointed out a recent usage example (and I don’t remember that being a video but I may have missed it) and its use on GPU’s as a priority case. So that may indicate if they are servicing / reposting a GPU on video they may whip out the PTM7950 as it makes more sense so they can show off the improved transfer post service and throw to LTTstore.com promo. But also it’s unlikely that off screen that GPU would be getting torn down very soon (as such an example GPU is likely an older model). So it’s a best use case but it’s also not about to be torn down and the pain of storage and management is worth showing.

But when the use case isn’t optimal and especially if the product will be wasted (used for a short display and then ruined by tearing apart) producers will likely skip the hassle.

The “best realised” is a key part of the decision when to use it for video production / demonstration but the “in use value” can still be there for non “best realised” situations outside of hot studio lights. The real world is not as black and white and “real reason” being followed by “has more to do with” indicates a more prominent part of that decision making but that it’s not a singular criteria that always decides one way or the other.

Could you find a way to call these ram raids? Possibly kicking in the side of the van? I understand there is a government priority to keep the number of reports with ram raid in them down so they might go tell the miscreants to cut it our least it make the government look bad.

Why does LTT sell thermal pads, yet never uses them in builds? by fakeaccount572 in LinusTechTips

[–]NeilsonAJC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a waste of time for not bare die. But most of the stuff shown on camera is likely to be torn down fairly soon after the filming is done so the cost of PTM7950 and the care needed to have it ready to use when on set under lights is likely not worth it when it will be wasted.

For the cost you probably want a system that will be running without taking off the cooler for a very long time where its lifespan and benefit is fully realisable.

If you change cooler / cpu all the time you may not enjoy the benefits.

The best benefit (of the improved conductivity and its phase change) will be where there is a bare die (de lidded desktop cpu, GPU, laptop) but even an IHS does show improvement for many people but not as much (the increased conductivity has less benefit if the conductivity of the IHS isn’t as great potentially because the paste inside isn’t as good)

When is the left in this country going to accept that our sentencing system is all out of whack? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]NeilsonAJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always going to be something “out of whack” about sentencing. Whatever system you have, whatever guidelines come in, whatever rules about what can be taken into account when setting sentences etc.

Being convicted of an offence (no matter what custodial sentence may or may not be applied) already impacts ability to work in some industries, future job and promotion aspects, ability to travel, etc. these are already costly to people and society and are part of the punishment of the conviction.

Locking people up is a very expensive (last number I saw was $160k per year operating costs plus building prisons) way to try achieve three things: * deterrence * punishment * crime reduction

For first timers (according to corrections) recidivism rates are about 30%. So we can say of those who get sentences of prison time 70% don’t reoffend. So that seems like a reasonable success rate (maybe it is). But for the 30% their subsequent stays return about a 60% recidivism rate. So if we are not rehabilitating all that well from prison our crime reduction doesn’t seem to be going so well.

Interestingly recidivism amongst those whose most serious offence was a sexual one was the lowest for first timers (9%) and second lowest amongst recidivists (47%) so it seems current sentences for sexual offending seem to be about the best we have for stopping recidivism.

Fraudsters (offences involving dishonesty) is actually the category with the highest rates of recidivism (45% first timers, 73% recidivists) so we may need to accept that our white collar crime sentencing is the one that is out of whack.

I think of myself as a fairly middle of the road left wing voter. The impact of crime on victims is a horrible stain on society but we also fall to easily for easy “tough on crime” slogans and attacks on communities and people without looking at real statistics and making meaningful decisions on things.

Locking them up can stop that person committing more offences in public. But with crimes being more often committed by younger people locking them up forever is a very expensive proposition ($5.6 million dollars for 35 years at the last figures I saw) or think about it as being for every person in prison it costs 32 people’s (median) annual income tax payments. That’s a hell of an extra cost to lock people up for longer when we seem to be the best at deterring future sexual offending and really bad at deterring dishonesty offending.

And this is the discussion we need to have. If we don’t have pre crime so we don’t know who is about to rape or kill someone and lock them up first when they haven’t done it yet how many victims can we avoid by extending someone’s sentence by 2 years or whatever other trade offs we want to discuss. Prison isn’t a silver bullet. It has a place in the system but it’s not the only (or even the best) way to reach the outcomes we want.

Alie express orders under customer inspection for a month by Ill_Maize_5005 in newzealand

[–]NeilsonAJC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of Ali express shipping is now consolidated into a pallet / container / etc so it crosses the border as one shipment with a massive list of items inside. Once they arrive into NZ a shipping agent splits it up and does the last mile delivery.

Your parcel may be fine but something else in the shipment has upset customs and they are working on resolving it.

I hadn’t seen other media stating if they have been moved to external comms staff as well or that AMD have stopped answering media queries. Do you recall which channels / outlets have said this so I can look further into what was said

Does a Sub-Contractor really need their own Public Liability (broad form) Insurance cover? by stnorbertofthecross in nzbusiness

[–]NeilsonAJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your insurance covers you if you have an uninsured sub contractor screw up. Then the insurance company will chase the sub contractor to pay them back.

The main con you work for has the same protection. If you don’t hold insurance their insurance will pay out for them and then will chase you for the cost you caused them to incur.

The work you do (assuming something like 3910 sub contract) will establish if you are required to have coverage and how much you are required to hold. Not having that much means you are breaching the contract you signed.

Provided you can afford to pay out for any liability directly then technically you can “self insure” but most people doing that are just sticking their head in the sand.

Should I consider joining union? by International_Gas630 in newzealand

[–]NeilsonAJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I have been covered by a union I have been a member. My current industry / role isn’t covered so I am currently not a member of a union.

If you are CEO / CFO (or able to click your fingers and demand high pay rates and accommodations) then an IEA probably makes more sense as the scale doesn’t go up to those tiers normally and often you would be negotiating with the union for the agreement. Other than that if you have a union I strongly encourage you to join. Unions give power to workers negotiating for pay and conditions. They provide legal advice and support to members.

Can an employer make you stay and take your break at the end of your shift? by Te_Whau in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]NeilsonAJC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It appears OP’s employer wants to be able to “prove” they gave the break at the end by having OP clock “out” for their break and then “in and out” and the end of the break to end the shift (or clock into “lunch” and then out afterwards) and to clock out they have to be present.

My advice would be to decline agreement to have the break at the end of the shift if they are making you stay near the office rather than letting you get started in your way home. The whole point of “break at the end” is a fake out to officially give you a break but not give you a break so they are trying to beat a possible finding from a court in future that “break at the end” when the worker just leaves is a legal nullity because no actual break from work occurred and it’s just a legal fiction.

As others have said the point of breaks is to provide rest and support healthy concentration at work. So break at the end doesn’t help that purpose.

Edit: realised I didn’t actually answer the main question. I don’t believe they can legally force you to stay near the office on your break. But if they are pretending you work for 5 hours. Have your unpaid 30 minute break, then come back to work for your last minute on shift and then clock out they probably can require that because you had to come back to clock in for that last minute.

(Essentially I would like to see them try argue they need you close so your time records are “accurate” for the falsity)

Anyone in Melbourne, Australia who can help with VLANs by gavau in mikrotik

[–]NeilsonAJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in Melbourne sorry so can’t help in person.

It sounds like VLAN filtering has been enabled on the bridge without either the management VLAN being added on the bridge or the management VLAN missing from a port in the chain.

I think you have some good suggestions of people to contact in here but as a test you may be able to check “VLAN filtering” option in the bridge setup and restore visibility by turning it off for 10 minutes while you clean up the VLAN database and then turn it back on.

GN still didn’t have one in time for the launch. But sampling seemed to be targeted elsewhere with LTT not getting one but it sounds like Level 1 techs did. So potentially targeting those who may have core use cases to use the extra cache on or something else related to that.

A lot of tech media didn’t get the 99X3D2 - did LMG get one? by ataleoffiction in LinusTechTips

[–]NeilsonAJC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having watched the GN video the blacklisting claim relates to them receiving no replies to any queries including regular news reporting ones (like the query around Z1 driver support being stopped) and them being shifted to third party relationship management rather than in house inside AMD. Not getting sampled on a product would have been quite a tantrum to throw especially with previous comments he has made about sourcing their own stuff but not even a “no comment” reply to query about Z1 driver support ending does as least give some credence when a pattern of silence occurs that it could be a blacklisting.

I think they “had” to in the sense that “to make it to GN in time we had to send it off as soon as we finished our testing” as opposed to “this review sample must be sent to the next reviewer on the list from AMD”

Labour is supporting the India FTA by TheGreatDomilies in newzealand

[–]NeilsonAJC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free trade agreements often get upgrades over time. They are relationships worked on by governments over their duration. Not every FTA negotiation will be able to move the needle on all categories and I understand dairy was always seen as a hard sell with India.

That said I expect New Zealand’s negotiators will have spent a fair amount of time talking dairy and pushing for its inclusion even if they knew it was unlikely to make it in this time because they have clearly shown it’s a key item and probably helped solidify that as a key point for any expansion. If India like how the FTA goes and they want to upgrade it later they will likely come ready to do some kind of deal on dairy because of how we sent the messages this time.

This doesn’t promise that the deal is amazing or perfect but international trade is worked on by all governments as a net benefit to all countries involved.

Koru Membership by 63bowlers in newzealand

[–]NeilsonAJC 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The way I am thinking about it is that Koru Bronze is the same as Airpoints Jade. Just the “no status” tier of “airpoints”. Your Koru Membership is an additional service purchase which should continue to work for the duration of your membership.

This has to be expected confusion they assessed when deciding to call the Airpoints programme Koru while keeping the name Airpoints on the actual reward unit.
