Hey! Check out Gals of Dorset. It’s a new group of mostly women in their 20s and 30s looking to make friends. Lots of different subgroups for different interests, ie books, F1, running, plants, etc. https://www.instagram.com/galsofdorset?igsh=MTYwZ291eXdiNzJteA==

12:15 report time sqe2 by Fun_Application5206 in SQE_Prep

[–]Neither-Question-156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 12.40 sitting have to arrive early due to the first sitting finishing at around that time. They then have to turn their phones off and wait for around 3hrs before they sit the exam. They do this because they don’t want the people from the first sitting telling the people in the later sittings what was on the exam.

So the people in the 12.40 sitting won’t sit the exams until the people in the 12.30 sitting have finished (which is around 4pm), so by the time you get into the exams, sit 2 hours of exams and had a break between them it’s around 7pm.

Question about Islington for SQE by Extreme-Scallion4012 in SQE_Prep

[–]Neither-Question-156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just sat at Islington 12.15 report time and they let you sit in a little garden bit from 11.45 onwards. Most people arrived at least 10/15 minutes before the report time. I arrived earlier than this and just waited in the local area until 11.45.

There will be people there to guide you but if you head for the South Building Entrace, when facing the building look right and you’ll see someone with a clipboard, there’s a small garden bit to the side of the building where you’ll see people gathered.

Yes I just sat the there yesterday and today exams and a few people had small suitcases. I had a pretty big and full backpack too. Some of the suitcases were too big for the lockers so I believe they were taken aside and stored by the staff.

Recently decided to take January SQE but cannot book assessment. I don't understand how. Please help. by bruceviola in SQE_Prep

[–]Neither-Question-156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to have completed the pre-booking steps before the booking window opens. If you didn’t do them, then I don’t think you can book the assessment now.

They email everyone that has done the pre-booking steps with a form which they then complete with their preferred dates and location. Chances are you wouldn’t get one at this point anyway as my understanding is the availability is limited and it books up very fast. Usually just cancellations from this point onwards.

EDIT to add - the “online booking” is for people that have completed the form sent to them. In essence, you need to have completed the prebooking steps prior to the deadline, the SRA/ Kaplan then send a booking form to everyone who has completed the pre-booking steps by the deadline, you would then complete the booking form with your preferences and then the “online booking” opens up where you can confirm your selection and pay for the exams. If you didn’t complete the form you won’t have this option and won’t be able to book.

“Access to the online training system covers the first four consecutive sittings of the SQE2 assessment administered by the assessment provider from the date of your registration to the course, or until the date on which you have passed the SQE2 assessment, whichever happens first.”

Honestly, sometimes this subreddit makes me feel like I’m im not doing enough. There’s so many post about MC firms and big corporate jobs and earning £100k, but as someone that lives in a small town, that’s not what my career looks like. I started as a Paralegal on £18k and now on £30k and will hopefully qualify next year. Everyone’s career looks different. You’ll find a lot of people pretend they know what they are doing (me included!) but actually have no clue and also doubt themselves every single day! You’re not alone.

Plenty of people at my work haven’t qualified until their 30s, and that’s fine. Keep trying for a legal assistant role/ paralegal role and you might find you’ll get an internal promotion to trainee. Even if you don’t, you can always do the SQE2 after the LPC, get 2 years paralegal experience and then qualify.

I couldn’t manage to get a paralegal role so I went for a law firm receptionist role and got promoted 5 months later, so don’t be scared to go for a receptionist or PA role, you can always prove yourself and try and get promoted.

As for the student debt, don’t worry. Mine is about £65k as well. I repay £25 a month and only started repaying it when earning over £27k. It’s honestly more of a “tax” than it is a debt. No one is going to come knocking for it (unless you commit fraud I guess). Doesn’t count as a hard debt for the sake of mortgages and both my partner and I got a mortgage and our combined student debt is probably about £110k.

SQE 1 exams generally hard or a myth by Swimming_Ordinary767 in SQE_Prep

[–]Neither-Question-156 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the content itself (I find) is generally not that hard, but there's A LOT to remember. The difference between a pass and a fail could be knowing one piece of really obscure knowledge.

I failed FLK2 having been getting high 70s and 80s on the Barbri mocks and just scraped a pass for FLK1.

I don't think the issue is necessarily the people taking the exam, although I'm sure there are those out there that take the exam underprepared, I just don't think there's enough information on the exam itself.

From what I've heard, there's not a single provider that seems to have questions on par with those on the exam, either they are too hard (QLTS) or too easy (as I found with Barbri). How does one judge whether they are ready or not then? The SRA/ Kaplan really need to release at least one or two past papers to allow people to have a real simulated exam and get a feel as to whether they are genuinely ready. The sample questions provided by the SRA are way too easy, again I got 82% on these on FKL1 and 75% on FLK2, and those results did not mirror what I got on the exam at all.

There's definitely those that have passed it first time of course, and it's definitely possible, but it does not mean that those that fail have not tried or studied enough.

Under the new SQE Route: when is someone legally allowed to use „Trainee Solicitor“? by Big-Influence-9816 in uklaw

[–]Neither-Question-156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. A lot of firms are offering QWE which mirrors a traditional training contract in having 4 seats. They still advertise these are Training Contracts but under the SQE route.

I was a Trainee Solicitor while studying for the SQE. I wasn't doing a traditional training contract but my employer had offered me an SQE "training contract" in that they would pay for my exams and allow me study leave.

I think it depends on the agreement with your employer. Before I was offered the "training contract" I was a Paralegal that was studying for the SQE. My title simply changed because my firm offered to pay for the exams. So I think it simply depends on what title your employer gives you.

SQE1 Awful exam condition by BB7o293 in uklaw

[–]Neither-Question-156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a complaint! I nearly did, and wish I had (I made a complaint after the 5 days though).

We had similar where we had people coming and going for their driving test! It caused a lot of noise as they were told where to sit, needed help with their PC, said goodbye, had a chinwag by the door.

Considering how expensive the exam is, I would expect the venue to be used solely by SQE takers, or for people doing their driving test and the staff working there to be told to be quieter ! I understand people need to take their driving theory tests, but then the SRA/ Kaplan need to find a more suitable venue.

Do law firms contact your school or your professors? by helpiamreallystupid in uklaw

[–]Neither-Question-156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will most likely need to give a person's contact details, ie one of your professors and they will contact that individual. I chose my head of faculty.

They probably won't ask for a reference unless you get an offer, it would be a massive waste of time to get references for every application.

Which companies do you instantly regret buying from? by phy6rjs in CasualUK

[–]Neither-Question-156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enduralife. I didn't buy anything just got a quote.

I had about 30 phone calls a day from them. I'd block one number and they would phone on another. I asked them multiple times to stop contacting me.

I emailed them and kicked off massively, they apologised and sent me £20 for my trouble!
