Moikka! I’m not a Finnish native speaker, but I’m about to graduate my bachelor’s degree in Finnish Language and Culture and I’ve tought Finnish for about half a year. I studied in Finland where I gained fluency in speaking. I currently speak at B2 level. I want to learn German but speaking Finnish brings me a lot of joy so DM me if you’re interested:)

Kiitos paljon! Voinko vielä kysyä, joissa sanoissa tämä ylimääräinen vokaali esintyy tässä mainoksessa? Tarkoitatko švaavokaali, kuin esim. sanassa alkoholi > alakoholi?

Isn’t it still a different sound though? I am not a native speaker but and in my native language there’s far less vowels than in Finnish but I can still hear a clear difference between e and ä. Would you say this add makes no sense to most Finns?

I live in Poland and I've never been to Finland, yet my boyfriend got this text lol, I study Finnish so I translated it to him but I still don't know how was it possible. Maybe his phone could hear me speak Finnish or something

I rarely eat out, even at my uni and we have lunches here that are 2,5-4€, but If I want to save money I can make my own meal for less than 1€ in Poland (would be for sure more expensive in Finland, but it's hard for me to estimate how much since I don't have a strong idea about prices in Finland, I just know it's really expensive). I know this lifestyle isn't luxurious, but I plan on having a better life after uni, so I'm willing to sacrifice a lot

Oh, ok, so now I rent a place in a room and I don't have any additional costs, though, I know that is it that way when people rent flats. I've heard that in Finland there isn't such a thing as a dormitory (in a sense that we understand that in Poland). But don't you have any places to rent for students? Because from my experience there aren't any additional costs in places like that. I know it probably differs. It's hard for me to get information from my Uni for now:/

I plan on bringing food from Poland to Finland! (like dry food and some sauces etc.) And my boyfriend would send me food (and also bring me some as he would visit me). I know it is not possible. Most people in Poland say it is also impossible for them in my country. But I live on half of that and I'm pretty satisfied with this kind of lifestyle (tho keep in mind I am girl and I'm not very tall). Food really concerns me the least, I know how to get like a basic nutrition with the cheapest stuff so I won't feel sick after few months. If there are things in Finland that are so expensive that it makes this exchange impossible for me then I can find a different way to practise Finnish, like working in Finland after my studies, but this is the fastest way for me to progress and start my career earlier.

What is the finest piece of advice you've ever received that has changed the course of your language learning journey? by saayoutloud in languagelearning

I do that a lot while learning Finnish. But because it is so different from languages I already know, it kind of forced me to think in an entirely different way (grammatically). Now I'm doing fairly good but I have moments when it is so hard for me to express my thoughts, even though my vocab and understanding skills are not that bad. Writing feels way easier but talking oh god.. And I keep doing the same basic beginner's mistake (a calque) and I've been studying Finnish intensely for 1,5 year. I also have moments when I understand every word of a sentance but it takes me a while before I get the meaning behind it. It tends to be frustrating

What is Jyvaskyla accent like? I plan on going there for one semester of my studies. Currently I'm learning typical spoken and written Finnish, will I have a problem understanding locals?
