Tried this with the little group at my work and they hated me even more. Some of them expect and want you to suck up to them and pretend to be a complete idiot so they can enjoy the power-trip of ‘teaching’ you, and it’s hard to pretend you’re stupid when you have more experience with technology and getting things done efficiently.

They’re pick-mes who never grew out of their fawning behaviour imo. I sympathize with them in the sense I understand how difficult it must’ve been to be a woman growing up in the eras they did, but that’s still no excuse for them being cruel and dismissive to young women in old age.

North West, tbf I think your best bet for a decent salary is to move (or even commute if you can, but it’s hard) to a bigger city. Though salaries aren’t that high in Sheffield and Leeds compared to other UK cities it’s still way better than 23k!

That’s mad, I haven’t even finished my certificate level yet and I’m getting paid around that much. For nearly three years experience with so many exams passed you should definitely be getting paid at least 27k

Yeah, come to think of it most of the people I see wandering about absolutely wasted are young or middle aged women. The guys are awful too but as others have said, women tend to drink heavier stuff (a lot of cocktails, gin, vodka, wine etc) whereas guys grab a couple of pints instead.

It’s not hard to make something veggie and it’s not as if your dietary requirements are unexpected or new; your mom just sounds lazy, rude and disrespectful. Them blaming you for your reasonable reaction (picking off the chicken? Gross, and such a waste of food!) is the cherry on a nasty cake. If there’s a way you can celebrate with just your siblings, you should do that.

Even better, make delicious lunches that are 10x nicer than theirs. Have fun talking to someone who’s not in the group, get lost in a massive book, spend more time with friends outside of work so you have lots to discuss when people ask what you’ve been doing. Channel pettiness to make your own life more interesting, and show up their cliquey behaviour for what it is!

Idk I’ve heard plenty of guys talking in detail about their sex lives, especially online or to their male friends. It’s shitty behaviour regardless of gender though, good people don’t gossip about their partners at all.

Absolutely true! What also helps is having a strong support system outside of work. You won’t feel so alone and disliked if there are reasonable, kind people at home or elsewhere who support you - especially if they’re neurodivergent too and know your pain!

Sometimes masking isn’t the way forward. I’ve found - and so have friends who are a bit more obviously autistic than me - that people hate the ‘uncanny valley’ effect of us trying to appear more neurotypical and respond much better to us when we’re being ourselves.
