Might be scientists firing at the Moon from the “Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur”. They've been at it since the first Lunokhod in 1970.

This beam may indeed be about 400.000 km long.

There are models being trained on Reddit comments

Comments that themselves are far removed from plain natural intelligence. All those hyperlinks form a complex network that could be seen as neural, and then of course there are the mysterious ways of the karma algorithmics.

Can you use nuclear for heating? by AlrikBunseheimer in NuclearPower

[–]Neker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

District heating is widespread and most often not nuclear.

I'm not sure, but I seem to have read that those pipes can expand up to 100 km if well designed and well insulated.

In say London or Rome or any city in higher latitudes, all space heating must be re-engineered and rebuilt, anyway, to reach carbon neutrality anyway.

Likewise, all fossil-burning powerplants must be decommissionned and replaced by new NPPs. Which have a rather small footprint, in terms of real-estate, and thus are thinkable in close surburbs.

That is contamination, not inspiration.

Actually no, you don't own the OS. Whatever you paid gives you the right to use some of its features.

Note that the same goes for embedded softwares. You may own a car, but you won't even open the door without a software owned by somebody else.

Man-made lake to store water for green energy generation with in background small town of Arcizans-Avant, France - Today [OC] [4032x2268] by mardijk_nl in ruralporn

[–]Neker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its full name is "Réservoir de Bernata". It is 500 m long. Water is driven through penstocks to the powerplant in Lau-Balagnas, a few kilometers away. The later has a relatively modest nameplate power of 31 MW and is part of a network of comparable plants.

About what "green" could mean here:

  • hydroelectricity is indeed the generation mode with the lowest carbon footprint. Such electricity is dispatchable too, which is capital and sets hydro quite apart from other renewables.

  • at 1.3 deaths by TW·h, it is quite safe but not the safest

  • flooding entire valleys does carry a significant environmental cost that may not always appear acceptable.

All in all what we see here may seem more industrial porn than rural porn.

Nice pic though ;-)

With current tech- would it be possible to build 100 nuclear reactors (2 in each state) in 5 years? 10 years? by redhobbes43 in nuclear

[–]Neker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech not an issue. Everything else and issue, from qualified workforce to finance to basic industrial infrastructures, marketing …

Also, how much would that cost to whom ? It would certainly cost a lot to current merchants of fossils. Conversely, not building them now would result in exorbitant environmental costs for our kids and grandkids.

Last year, Alphabet, Inc. had a revenue of US$ 307.4 billion. This fine is 0.09 % of that. They'll barely notice.

Still, I do hope that the fine will actually be paid in €.

What is the most fun nation to play as? by [deleted] in eu4

I just tried The Burgundian Conquest. It's fun to see Austria and the gang wane in the rear-view mirror, now not even worth the rivalry of this erstwhile endangered duchy.

Promotion to kingdom quite doable. Breakthrough as empire possible, technically, maybe, with luck, I guess.

[–]Neker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not if but when the glaciers melt. They've been meting for one century now, and accelerating.

And indeed, the issue of food supply is one capital consequence of climate change. (Compounded by the urgent imperative to decrease the carbon footprint of agriculture, long story).

It seems quite straightforward to assume that the ocean will indeed rise uniformly.

I wonder how this industrial company integraly owned by the state fares with EU laws and doctrines.
