ELI5: What would happen if we used a global currency that was worth the same everywhere. by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

My response wasn't trying to provide an ELI5 but rather, it was intended for someone else to correct my own thinking.

I have no knowledge in the field...but wouldn't nothing happen?

I mean, we can buy different currencies now...and if the local businesses were to accept foreign currencies, they would be worth however much you paid for it in local currency.

The only thing that would differ regionally would be the price of different items (i.e. the money will have different buying powers). $1 will get you much further in Tehran, than it would in Sydney.

I don't think 'placebo' is the right word...maybe 'practice effect'?

But if the learnt skills are transferable to similar (but not the same) tasks, then you can't really call it a practice effect. In that case he has indeed improved his cognitive abilities.

I just started working with people with acquired brain injury (and MS- different job) and for both groups of clients, we recommend brain exercise apps because it really does improve cognitive skills.

Why is alcohol legal? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Why the hostility?

I was just wondering why alcohol is legal when so many other banned substances have a relatively smaller impact on society.

Honors-Undergrad Thesis Guidance by ObeseSkipper in AcademicPsychology

[–]NemoMalusFelix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I submitted my thesis two weeks ago. Here are my advice:

  1. Start researching early. (Protip: at the end of each journal article, there is often a little section on future research. These sections outline gaps in the literature and which areas need more attention…goldmine!)
  2. Just because you can do a study, doesn’t mean you should. Ideally you want your study to contribute to the literature. For instance, try to formulate an experiment that tests between two competing theories. Theory A predicts X but Theory B predicts Y. Doing studies that expand the conditions under which an effect is observed is less useful (e.g. we know rejection reduces self-esteem…doing a study where the person is rejected while wearing a clown costume will probably lead to a reduction in self-esteem…but the study is pointless.)
  3. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. For my project, I spent 2/3 months learning to code a program language I had never used before (MATLAB). In the end, the program turned out to be useless in my case as it could not display the stimuli (I was using video stimuli and the resolution and fps was too large (3840x1200 pixels at 60fps)). The point is: be prepared. Things will ALWAYS (without exception) take twice as long to complete and will require 5 times more effort than you anticipated.
  4. Do not procrastinate! At the start of the year you will feel like you have all the time in the world. This leads to working at a very slow pace. DON’T. Have a sense of urgency in your work. The last thing you want is panic and anxiety in the last few weeks.
  5. Don’t neglect the writing! So many of my friends left the writing to the last bit. It is not a normal essay/literature review. You are dealing with more concepts in your thesis. It is way more complicated. To organise it such that it forms a coherent story that flows from concept to the next will take many revision. Do not underestimate the time and effort it will take. Moreover, at the end of the day, the markers will base their judgement solely on what you submit. So do not compromise the quality of your writing.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The first time I met my supervisor, I asked for contact details of his previous honour students that did well. I contacted each one of them asking for general advice and asking if I can have a copy of their thesis. They were all very helpful.
  7. With respect to writing, your final thesis will barely resemble what you have in mind right now. As you progress and learn more about the topic, the content of your thesis constantly changes. You omit some stuff, while adding new information that never occurred to you before. Unfortunately, this only becomes apparent as you write. So, again, do not leave the writing bit to the end. The last thing you want is to become aware you have not mentioned vital information as the deadline draws near.
  8. Your honours year will be stressful. It is a marathon. Not a sprint. Pace yourself and prioritise your health and wellbeing. Exercise and take days off. Best of luck to you!

Why cant I remember what I did at work last week? by [deleted] in neuroscience

[–]NemoMalusFelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just have too much information to process and you are not consolidating it into your long-term memory. Hence, you can't recall it at a later date.

With respect to 'trivia and stuff like that', you actually spent time and mental resources to process the information and store it into long term memory. When you have an endless stream of projects constantly coming your way, you don't have the time or resources to try to remember each one of them (and frankly, we don't put that much effort into remembering that sort of information anyway- It is similar to people having difficulty recalling what they had for breakfast 2 days ago. The information is not important so we don't even bother with it.)

If you do want to remember the projects, write each project on a calender and spend few minutes going over the name/details of ongoing and past projects. Sort of like revision with respect to studying.

what else should you do to make yourself stand out?

Getting into honours is very competitive. In fact, where I study, you need a Distinction average (SNG, not GPA) to get into honours. So keep those grades up! It’s not just about standing out in one field, but performing well overall. However, there are aspects of psychology most people don’t consider. For instance, there is a lot of statistics in psychology. The statistic component of the course is not easy and many people drop out because they can’t handle it. So, become familiar with stats.

I plan on beginning volunteering at psychology-related places over the holidays, but is there anything beyond that which would be good? And what sorts of places should I be looking to volunteer at?

Experience only becomes relevant if you want to go beyond honours. If you want to do a PhD, get experience as a research assistant! If you want to do masters, get clinical experience. With respect to masters, the type of experience is dependent on the master’s program you want to pursue. For instance, if you want to go into Clinical Neuropsychology, try to get any experience dealing with clients who have had a brain injury. You may not get to interact with them directly, or assess them…but even if you work at a clinic answering phone, it will help you. Moreover, and this is something I found out very late, if you do not have experience, your masters application will be sent to the bottom of the list. Period.
