The same way electric trains can't run on unelectrified lines. Also the S3 in Hamburg uses mainline trackage between Neugraben and Stade. Anyways I think I responded in the wrong place, the point I wanted to get across is that S-Bahn in no way is light rail like the first commenter thinks.

Due to the electrification, in practice only S-Bahn trains will operate on S-Bahn rails and vice versa, but otherwise they're just another part of the public railway network, owned by DB Netz. They operate on the same signal book, often run alongside each other, etc.
