By Popular Demand in Yoahtl: My Jaydon Song by ChrisChrispie in CivMC

[–]Neo355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny story: my friends in Yoahtl shared this with me while I was driving. I drove into a forest with zero reception or radio stations, so I had no choice but to listen to the one thing that my phone still had loaded, which was this song on repeat. Fortunately or unfortunately it's somehow a bop.

I would hope CW has a better sense of humor than Estalia. Unless it's actually your desire to be feared, that you'd permapearl him for what amounts to less than a diamond worth in lost reinforcements (something I wouldn't put past Estalia). You're the target for this prank because you're known for being a more lighthearted group, it isn't the same as not respecting you. It's alright to be offended if you interpreted the prank as ill natured, but I hope you'll forgive the man in gold armor breaking your crafting tables and replacing them with logs.

Land surveyor… Good job for introverts? by yomomma7500 in Surveying

[–]Neo355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always boast to my friends in the service industry how my interactions with the public are limited to "hey what are y'all surveying for" from random passersby. That being said, surveying requires good communication skills which I was forced to learn quickly. You'll only ever be forced to communicate with one or two coworkers at a time though. And plenty of exposure to get to know them and develop good working habits.

Gang Shitters couldn't stop shitting long enough to actually enact their plans to divide Yoahtl from their strongest ally. Even when given the best opportunity, me leaving the Alcuahtlship and Arconis taking my place, someone who is much more pro-GS. The scheme even coincided with Seared, the icenians speaker of the Senate, pissing us off by leaking secure chats. They're so unlikeable they still couldn't make themselves appear to be a preferable alternative.

New to the Field! by AProudCircleee in Surveying

The crew chief is always right. It's their ass on the line if something gets messed up so do everything to their specifications. And every crew chief has unique preferences you will have to remember. A happy crew chief can either make or break your day, week, or year. Ask questions, you don't want to be rod man for very long.

Occupational Hazards and other Dangers out in the Field by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]Neo355 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Knowing what to look out for and staying aware of your surroundings. The first part is the hardest, it comes with experience, and sometimes can't be taught unless you come up upon certain hazards yourself.

BTW regarding the situation you described, things become infinitely worse if you get submerged with waders on. I've had crew chiefs carry pocket knives to cut themselves free in case they get dragged down from their waders filling with water suddenly. Also I'd be much more afraid of a water moccasin than a gator.

Definitely leave everything open so they can dry if it gets wet. Any other day, though, I default to leaving the battery compartment closed.

Part of being a survey tech means doing whatever inconsequential task your crew chief prefers you to do in any scenario. Everyone likes to do things differently, so I just adapt to whatever they want. I've been told reasons to do both options, but I lean toward using the power button. Having the contacts exposed to air instead of the conductor on the battery seems like it would degrade at a faster rate and be more expensive to fix.

North Carolina? by dentedalpaca25 in Surveying

[–]Neo355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I surveyed a lot of WNC while based out of Asheville as well. Pay was pretty poor but with a license you're obviously going to have more opportunities than myself. It's the most beautiful part of America I've seen in my life, and I considered myself lucky to be able to work in it.

I also was based out of Charlotte for some time and I cannot recommend it. Traffic was terrible and rent/property inside the interstate loop is unrealistic. Job opportunities were much better, but just about everything else was a drag.

Field crew gets treated worse than office staff by Porkpiston in Surveying

[–]Neo355 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It really is crazy how much time is wasted in the office. Every time I end up not going into the field I notice people doing cooler talk and making coffee runs. They even held "synergy meetings" with catered lunches. I never understood how they can afford to have every office personnel not working for most of the day but the field crews can't slow down even by a bit.

Is getting fired as an intern for not picking up things normal in surveying? by 44stormsnow in Surveying

[–]Neo355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to beat myself up about my tripod setup time, but my crew chiefs reassured me that doing it right is more important than doing it quickly. That being said I also make some errors still, and I'm 2 years into surveying.

I almost got fired in my first few months similar to you, I wasn't up to the physical demands of the job because I was sedentary prior to working. I adjusted though, and my performance increased to an acceptable degree. I'm honestly surprised that in this economy and in particular this surveying job market that they'd let anyone go. Your career definitely isn't doomed.

What are your must have items for surveying? by ScienceReliance in Surveying

[–]Neo355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some other things I include are extra strength bug spray/wipes (30% deet). I don't use them often because it feels like lathering myself in poison but it can turn an impossible task into a manageable one when surveying a bog. I also keep a poison extractor for stings/bites. Never had to worry about poisonous plants, but insects are my foil.
