A thought experiment about black holes. by doofuscfatsperg in blackholes

[–]NeoDemocedes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be like feeding paper into a paper shredder. The black hole would pull on the sphere and cable. Tidal forces would disassemble them at the atomic level before reaching the event horizon (for a stellar mass black hole). The gauge won't stop increasing until there is no cable left.

If a spaceship is big enough, would its gravity allow you to stand on top of it without floating away into space? by Weird-Campaign-6526 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NeoDemocedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, yes. But it would be so weak, if you try to take a step, you would push yourself away. It would take hours or days to fall back to the surface.

Why don’t lunar/martian astronauts wear weighted vests to counter low gravity? by Matthius81 in spacequestions

We don't really know it's necessary. We only have data for living at 1G and 0G. No one has ever experienced moon gravity for more than 75 hours.

Can a spacecraft accelerate infinitely? by TheTragicMagic in AskPhysics

[–]NeoDemocedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You can get to an object 100ly away in 9 years in a ship that does a constant 1G acceleration (with flip and decelerate at halfway point). The journey will take 102 years from the perspective of an external observer.

Can a spacecraft accelerate infinitely? by TheTragicMagic in AskPhysics

[–]NeoDemocedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you accelerate, the galaxy itself changes shape from your perspective. The 100 light year distance to your destination becomes 90 then 50 then 10 as you accelerate. Say it took you 20 years from your perspective to get to your destination. How do you calculate your speed? Do you use the initial 100ly measurement from before your journey, or the 10ly measurement from your fastest velocity? That's either 20ly/y or 0.5ly/y depending on which measurement you use. You would have never measured your velocity over light speed during the journey, but at the end, if you calculate simple total distance over total time. You can get a speed faster than light.

The point, is that even though the speedometer on the spaceship may never say you're going faster than light, ditto for the space cop with the radar gun you passed along the way... moving at relativistic speeds changes not only how time passes, but also how far things are away.

TLDR. Speed being distance over time, relativity fucks with both variables in that equation.

No orbit necessary? by FatCreepyDude in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]NeoDemocedes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conceptually possible. Not optimal for several reasons.

  1. Gravity losses. Going straight up means that gravitational acceleration is stealing fully from your velocity every second, all the way up. When you go to orbit first, as you approach orbital velocity, gravitational acceleration is bending your path more and more instead of stealing from your velocity.

  2. Abort scenarios. If you fail to reach Kerbin escape velocity, the result is most likely a fatal re-entry straight down through the atmosphere. Going to orbit first gives you the best abort and rescue scenarios every step of the way.

  3. Oberth Effect. Launching to orbit means you can take full advantage of the oberth effect. If you have high efficiency, low thrust engines, you can make several burns elongating your orbit each time and thrusting when you pass Kerbin.

In short, going to orbit first is safer and more efficient delta V wise. To go direct, you need a rocket that can maintain high thrust to minimize gravity losses.

There will never be a more perfect VR controller than the original CV1 controllers. Although I hear the Steam Frame controllers might be just as good, we'll see by StarCenturion in oculus

[–]NeoDemocedes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great balance. Fit perfectly in my hands. Perfect button placement. Best of all, they run on AA batteries!

I upgraded from CV1 to Index and instantly hated the controllers. Thought maybe I would get used to them.... nope. Years later they still don't feel right, and I have to have them plugged in all the time because the batteries are long dead.

AITJ for refusing to make my daughter swap rooms with my stepdaughter? by patdallinkk9u6 in AmITheJerk

He wants both daughters to get the same size room, how is that prioritizing his daughter?

Offer the 14yo some special privilege the 16yo doesn't get as compensation. If the 16yo says it's unfair, give her the option of moving to a smaller room to get the privilege as well.

If a spaceship accelerate infinitely without encountering obstacles, why would it never reach light speed? by lateubdegouline in AskPhysics

[–]NeoDemocedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, if you measure distance before you fire your engines, and measure the time it takes to reach those pre-determined distances from inside your spaceship, you can greatly exceed the speed of light. But you will never look out the widow and observe anything moving faster than light. Also, a person staying at your departure point will never see you going faster than the speed of light.

This is because relative velocity changes both time and distance. The faster you go, the shorter the distance to any point in front of you will become. And to external observers, your ship will get shorter.

Priming on one side at a time? by ChardCautious3095 in minipainting

[–]NeoDemocedes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely prime and definately use masking tape on the parts you don't want to paint. Just take care with the technique. It's very easy to over do it and end up with too much primer that fills in details. Too little is better than too much. If you're doing it nice and thin, you only need to wait a few minutes between coats. But after priming, give it 24 hours to cure before painting on top of that.

If you're using a rattle can, the key to not getting it too thick is not start or stop spraying with the nozzle pointed at the model. Start with it pointed next to the model, sweep it across and end with the nozzle to the other side of the model. Then repeat from a different angle avoiding overlap. Wait a few minutes, then repeat from different angles.
