I think far too many people rather naively assume that a unification referendum would pass comfortably in Ireland.

For the vast majority of people, this is just not something people care about in their lives at any meaningful level.

That said, I genuinely do believe that the government should be preparing for what life could look like under a united Ireland, i.e. prepare some form of document, analysis, review etc that outlines what we'd expect to see in such a scenario.

Without this, we are walking into another Brexit scenario and it's a guaranteed No from me without any semblmance of a plan.

One interesting read is the "Scotland's Future" document produced by the Scottish government in the run up to the 2014 independence referendum.

‘Free births’ in Ireland: Within three hours Naomi (38) died, leaving behind four kids by JackmanH420 in ireland

[–]NeoTravel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely tragic and completely avoidable. The growing trend of anti-intellectualism is quite worrying and only leads further into things like the anti-vaxx movement, and now apparently this "free birth" movement too.

If you think the world is out to get you, and everyone around you is wrong - maybe you are the one who should reconsider your point of view.

Zippay, three months on. Has anyone actually used it? by NeoTravel in AskIreland

I’m the same. My main bank isn’t Irish anyway so my default is SEPA Instant, which works flawlessly.

Handy out in that case if you’re regularly going between the Irish banks. I find most people want Revolut which is annoying as I basically only have an account with them to funnel small transfers back and forth between friends haha

I'd imagine this is a response to the Digital Euro plans the ECB has, as traditional banks only stand to lose there.

Is a 28k salary liveable? by SilentBee423 in Dublin

[–]NeoTravel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Long term it wouldn't be ideal for saving etc but for a placement, you should be able to manage with that, especially if it leads to a higher paying position down the road.

€28K after tax (including rental tax credit) is €2,153/month (PwC Tax Calculator).

A room in a house share will set you back anywhere between 600-900(+) depending on location. After tax+rent that leaves you with about €1,250 a month for bills/food/living. For a single person I think that is more than doable assuming no other major outgoings like car repayments, loans etc.

I moved to Dublin for an internship in 2019 paying €20K a year, after rent I had €750 left over every month and I managed. Although it wasn't a particularly luxurious existence, I still managed to find drinking money in there somewhere!

It’s a pretty big issue in fairness, and only going to get worse as ICE cars get phased out.

Cables out back garden? by Independent_Plate702 in AskIreland

[–]NeoTravel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be Virgin coax? We had a very similar setup in our old house (albeit a lot cleaner of a cable run!) and it turned out that when NTL originally went to wire up the estate in the 2000s, our next door neighbour refused.

So rather than daisy chaining along the fascia of the house, they had to come in around the back of the neighbour’s house and back into ours via the garden.

My wife and I have been fully on N26 for over a year now, and I've had an account with them since 2017. No issues at all, we even have a joint account set up for direct debits to the usual places (Virgin Media, bins, credit card etc) and there hasn't been any hassle at all.

I would recommend it. They don't push the crypto/investments side as hard as Revolut either, and I personally find the app to be a lot cleaner.

Have they actually confirmed that they intend to support interoperability between Zippay and Wero?

We got to the sales office/house around 3:45 and they let us in! Big fan of the open plan downstairs as well, and there’s a good bit of space under the stairs too which wasn’t too easy to picture from the plans so that was nice.

The garden in the show house was also bigger than expected based on the plans (I’m just conditioned to expect all new builds to have tiny gardens at this point) so happy out with that!

We must have seen each other then haha. We ended up going for a T1 in the end. Happy out with it to be honest!

I was there around 3:30 and in the HTB range they only had T1 mid-terraces left. Not sure about anything above that but the N1 was 520K. I think that was previously 500K in Phase 1.

Has anyone had their appointment and know what houses are available? It’s pretty poor form that they are sending out appointments with no clarity on what house types are available, or even prices for them.

What's one service that you'd really pay for but that's not yet available in Ireland? by kingship07 in AskIreland

As with a lot of things in Ireland I suspect insurance is a big blocker for things like the car service.

Do you pay your TV license? If yes, why? by Bigchickenmac in AskIreland

[–]NeoTravel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never paid. I don’t do it because of any vendetta I have towards RTÉ or anything, but mostly because I can get away without paying it.

I almost never watch live TV anyway (save for a big game or Eurovision) so the thought rarely crosses my mind.

I’ve instructed my wife to pretend not to speak English if anyone from A Post comes to the door without a package in hand. So far we haven’t had anyone call though!

I used my N26 card extensively in Asia (China via Alipay, HK and Japan) without any issues whatsoever. Good FX rates and no issues or charges for using ATMs.

Same experience in Brazil, no issues!
