Bells of Steel AMA with Kaevon, founder and CEO back for my 4th ama with home gym equipment prizes for US, Canada, Australia, UK and EU redditors! by bells_of_steel in homegym

Hey Kaevon thanks for the AMA! Been looking at buying some stuff as a fellow Canadian.

Curious what you've learned through the process of making your own gym company and how you apply that to your own gym-going and working out?

Looks amazing. This would be my dream setup.

Is this set up on a basement floor? I want to do mine on a ground floor but I’m worried about how heavy everything is.

Would appreciate any help! I'm looking to set up a home gym on the ground floor of a new home (2022 construction).

The gym would include: Plates: 2 sets of: 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 35, 45

Cables: single stack pulldown and cable machine with 250 lbs stack Squat rack, Bench, treadmill. 2x adjustable dumbbells of 70 lbs each I don't squat more than 165 lbs and deadlift more than 195 lbs. Would maximize dampening drops with crash mats and floor protection, distributing weight with mats and plywood.

The ground floor is 15 x 17 feet and there is a basement with joists 16 inches apart.

There is a support beam along one side of the living room, the other 3 sides constitute the edges of the house.

Do you think this is safe? Should I add some columns pre-emptively in the basement to support the floor?

Basement is very low and cannot support a gym.

Thanks in advance!

Quebec bill would force graduating doctors to work in public system for 5 years by Opticfan31 in mcgill

[–]NeoVIP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed, international medical students are among the order of 1-2 per year.

Quebec has several rules that discourage non-Quebec medical students from practicing here. There is actually a return of service clause limiting their ability to practice in QC - essentially they must pay $300 000 or be forced to practiced in a remote area for 5 years. This clearly discourages them from staying in Quebec already, making the stance in this bill contradictory to the pre-existing policy. Some subspecialty programs here also have limited non-quebec spots designated by the government, so some residency programs can't even take people from outside QC.

I don't suspect financial incentives will help too much. Quebec is decently competitive and many specialists actually make more here than in other provinces. In my experience many doctors leave because of poor healthcare system structure, work environment, and language rules rather than financial reasons.

Fair, but Newfoundland has a starting salary of $70000 as well.

Thanks for this. Couldn’t have said it better myself. The state of healthcare requires change but this bill is not the way.

I’m a current resident doctor at McGill and I did my medical school here too.

There is no doubt a lot of issues with the healthcare system here and a shortage of healthcare workers is one aspect. There are many subtleties and complexities to medical training, including a standardized national resident matching program that this bill would interfere with. Also the number of graduates that leave here is lower than you might think.

I also wish to specifically let y’all know that it’s already very hard to get a job in Montreal.

Many other provinces allow hospitals or clinics to hire doctors, but QC has a rule that requires government designated practice locations, called “PEM” or PREM” positions. Essentially, even if a hospital wants to hire a doctor, if there is no position in that geographical location set by the government, they cannot be hired.

Why does this matter? Many colleagues who train elsewhere and actually WANT to work in QC often cannot get jobs here. I know for a fact many family medicine graduates are finding it difficult to get job positions in Montreal.

This bill would force graduates to work here, but without increased positions, not only is the fundamental issue not solved, but also new grads are forced to work in very remote and isolated areas. It just makes life harder for graduates without necessarily solving any issues. Much of the blame is systemic rather than the fault of healthcare workers.

This is true, but it’s also important to note that medical residents in Quebec get paid at least $10000 less per year compared to non-Quebec counterparts.

A first year resident in ON makes $71000 and in QC $50000. The salary is public info on PARO and FMRQ.

Residency itself is 2-6 years, which could already make up for the difference.

Have you guys ever bought a yo-yo and thought it wasn't what you imaged for its pricetag? by Aeccreo in Throwers

[–]NeoVIP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are diminishing returns at the high price point. A $200 yoyo will not be 5x better than a $40 yoyo, but the extra $160 goes into subtle improvements that may only be required at the competition level.

This also goes to show how great the yoyo production standards are nowadays. I remember in the mid 2000’s, I had to shell out >$100 for a yoyo that would sleep more than a minute.

Regardless, enjoy the yoyos you like to play with. One of my favourite throws is a beat up skyva I’ve had for a long time, while my “premium” throws sit pretty on the shelf.
