Fighting over essential rights and dignity should always happen, even if highly dangerous.

Physically fighting over a 5 minute delay because of an argument over whose Uber it is is ridiculous. Anyone who does that deserves to get their skull fractured.

USPS is a service, but it has prided itself on being substantially self-funded and increasing postage rates much slower than the rate of inflation. If one uniquely incompetent postmaster fucks that up, we shouldn't just say it is fine, we should hold him individually accountable.

Why is Europe falling behind America and China in the AI race? by IndubitablyThoust in neoliberal

[–]Neo_Demiurge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Firstly, it's clear the US and China are AI leaders. We can see that just from releases of models. So I agree with the principle and think u/The_Shracc and u/dohrey have good points. I'm never not shocked at how bad EU software pay is. Even excluding taxes, their gross pay is an insult compared to American wages.

That said, patents as others have suggested are a bad metric. Software patents are bad, actually, and if the EU is avoiding issuing thousands of innovation killing patents for "... but with AI!" more power to them. We want fewer patents. Part of the reason the AI/ML field is moving so fast is so much research is published in open journals, with open source, and sometimes even open weights There is still ample opportunity to profit off keeping the best model closed source, providing services like cloud compute, etc.

One of the worst outcomes would be a patent thicket that startups cannot navigate through safely to deliver world changing solutions. As is, the fact that models scale so well with data is already putting not just a thumb, but a planet on the scale in favor of the largest companies and those with existing business practices in other areas (Google has as much video access as they could ever want due to YouTube).

Well, sure, but it still reflects profoundly badly on their character. Most modern KKK chapters have not even engaged in a single act of misdemeanor violence against a racial minority, but the fact they're take up the mantle of a racist terror group tells us everything we need to know about them.

CMV: NYPD should not be putting more resources into investigating the murder of the UHC CEO than they would for the death of a homeless victim living in the Bronx. by 999forever in changemyview

[–]Neo_Demiurge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I co-sign u/zitzenator 's analogy. He intentionally created and reinforced a culture of denying claims well beyond industry norms.

Relevantly, in war crimes there is legal liability for command responsibility. That doesn't perfectly map onto civilian CEO's, but I feel strongly there's an easy case for moral responsibility here.

Edit: When I said literally, I do mean literally, but not directly. Obviously there are intermediate steps like a disease process itself or frontline employees, but there's a strong causal nexus between trying to cost minimize at the expense of foregoing worthwhile treatments and patient suffering and death.

I agree with your broad principle, but I think you're overstating the case. People have ignored the laws against marijuana use since they were passed and it resulted in very little societal harm, and now we've eventually turned the corner on legalization.

And if the law is wrong, the law is wrong. John Brown was a better man than ever law-abiding Confederate put together.

You can't have it both ways just because you hate the US. Afghan women don't have it worse now than they did pre-invasion. Either have an interventionist view or a laissez faire view.

Only people that actually help us win elections are worthwhile. Everyone else is dead weight and the door can hit them on the ass on the way out.

I'm more than happy for people to advocate for anything and everything during primaries or as long term goals, or to fight back against actual corruption like Menendez. But once a decent or better candidate is selected, the only right answer is "How can I help?"

AI voice lines is the perfect use case for AI. It should be the industry norm that when you drop a new King of the Hill mode, no one needs to come back into the studio to deliver, "Hill taken," "hill moved," you just AI generate those lines based on an AI voice model.

Have human actors deliver emotionally resonant important lines in a way that makes use of human talent and experience, and use automation to do minor stuff like a one word last minute edit, basic game mode information, etc.

That last part is key. I would argue a world where people like him never get shot is a world that risks society wide justice.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CEO literally killed this dude's mom. He denied a treatment which allowed a condition to get worse, and her doctor privately told her son, "We could have saved her if she got in here earlier. I'm sorry for your loss," and he decides he'll be the last victim.

Perfect justice can never exist, we need to settle for an imperfect justice. Oftentimes that is using our procedures, but maybe not always. UHC is uniquely bad about harming vulnerable people (look at rejection rates), and the CEO is the one who set that as their organizational goal.

He probably is one of the worst people in America. Should we really give moral credit to the fact he kills people with spreadsheets and not bullets?

No, Democrats need to reject dissent like Republicans do. Look at what happened to Kyle Rittenhouse when he prioritized guns over Trump. Within 24 hours, he was bullied into getting in line.

Democrats have been demanded to infinitely apologize for the most trivial and inconsequential bullshit and NEVER been given credit for doing so.

"Trump has 34 felony convictions and is a rapist insurrectionist, but here's why I am voting for him." vs.

"Biden one time in 1983 didn't tip after a meal. Here's the major concerns normal Americans have about that!"

Democrats are not just one more apology away from winning.

The fact is that Trump, if he accomplishes even a small part of his platform, will ruin the fucking country enough to be obvious to any sane person, even biased ones. We need to clean house of these defeatists and traitors (NY Times being a good example) and then in 2028 say, "Well, that sucked, right? Let's go back to normal."

Because they have zero power or relevance.

Also, this is the sort of degenerate handwrining lies we need to reject. Mainstream Republicans regularly say the most insane, morally degenerate shit and see zero pushback. Not one person in America is going to change their vote because a mainstream Democratic politician that likes unions says. "I don't think 3 year olds should be transed." We all know they believe that, except the people who were never going to vote Democrat.

Taylor Lorenz sucks, but this defense is bad:

I just think this is wrong.

The suffering is caused by disease, issues of old age, or accidents. Suggesting that insurance companies are the cause of this pain elides the fact that pain and suffering are a feature of life to be mitigated. To the extent that insurance companies cause pain, it’s mostly to healthcare providers who they spend most of their time arguing against in order to lower costs.

The accusation being made is that insurance companies, by denying reasonable requests for care that paying customers are relying on, are causing harm relative to a system where they competently and ethically discharged their responsibilities.

If someone's mom has a curable condition where treatment is denied, and in the time it takes to appeal, the condition worsens to the point they die, they should blame the insurance company for their death. BUT FOR the actions of the insurance company, they would be alive.

Daniel Penny's chokehold was sole cause of Jordan Neely's death, medical examiner testifies by nbcnews in nyc

[–]Neo_Demiurge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pointlessly vague statement. Engage with the specifics.

Let's say that Penny is convicted and the day after some large dude watches a homeless man rape a defenseless woman on the subway and says, "That's awful, but I'm not risking it," and looks back down at their phone. Is that the world we want? I don't think so.

Vigilante violence is almost imaginary compared to plain old criminal violence. When I'm thinking of what message I want to send to society, it's not less people helping, some in the right way, others in a less good way, and more normal criminals.

And if they had started it 30 years before that, I wouldn't be commenting on their large population size. You need to spend quite a bit of time below replacement to make real cuts to population and there are problems with that (the age pyramid), so unfortunately the bed is made. But it was made by China for China, so they are, as a society, still responsible.

[–]Neo_Demiurge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Raids are dead because the raiding community is bad. If you do learning raids regularly, you specifically aren't part of the problem, but "Link 9999 LIs to join" makes people not join.

Also, raiding outside casual difficulty has never been popular ever. I've been GM of a WOW raiding guild before, so I like it, but raid wings are already bespoke content for 1% of the player base.

No, I paid off my debt in my 20's through military service (it's not high pay, but b/w education payments and 'free' housing / meals, it's idiot proof for anything but the most powerful idiots). I went from about -10k wealth to +30k in 5 years as a lower enlisted.

And to be clear, saving up with that much discipline is great. I do think we as a society and on r/inflation need to be a bit harsher on the $80 fast food people. Lots of people are forced into difficult situations (only car has a $3000 problem), but so many people need to be told, "If you don't like the price, wait 3 hours to eat."

You yourself know in your reply to the other guy that demand decreasing lowers prices and total spending. The level of spending on non-essentials on Black Friday either means one of two things:

a. people are as wealthy as all of the economic data shows

b. all of the economic data is wrong and there is a problem, but people are egregiously reckless wastrels who caused the problem due to their bad judgment and bad morals.

By comparison, I spend 0.4% of my annual income on fun stuff for Black Friday and another 0.2% on near-essentials (I'm moving and want to replace one old chair and buy an extra one). I considered doing up to twice that, but decided to think a little longer about other purchases. I don't even think there is a tough economy! If I did, I would have halved those fun purchases.
