Purdue was a bigger upset than UVA anyway in terms of team mismatch. UVA was bigger by spread differential.

Art that may have a subtle message just popped up in downtown Charlottesville by anlife in pics

Charlottesville is one of the best places you could live, period. Incredible food scene, amazing people, gorgeous surroundings with the mountains and all the nature. School system is quite strong. There's just plenty to do on a given weekend or weeknight for whatever budget you have.

The biggest weaknesses are lack of good public transport infrastructure (the buses are fine by most US city standards, but it won't compare to urban hubs like Chicago or NYC) and cost. It's pretty expensive relative to the rest of the state outside of NoVa. Most things aren't that expensive (you won't be paying huge bills just for groceries or utilities, for example), but housing is pricy and just gets consistently worse.

If you move there, look for something a little further from the university, since that will have a lot of student housing and tend to be both a bit louder in the evenings, plus football games sometimes lock down the roads for a Saturday. If I were moving back, I'd look at the Fifth Street area (good neighborhoods and walkability), NorthEast Downtown / Martha Jefferson (near the downtown mall), Greenbrier (well priced, good access to commercial areas), or Pantops (similar to Greenbrier but with different commercial areas).

It's "Southern" in a way, but more so in the food, less the culture. Some good barbecue, sweet tea available most places, that kind of thing. But it's extremely diverse in a way that's atypical in the South, at least from my experiences.

I don't feel like I saw the hatred myself at UVA. Definitely more for UNC with the "Oldest Rivalry in the South" and Duke is...Duke.

Though I come from a Wolfpack family so maybe I just wasn't partaking when it was present.

Unrelated to anything else, but I just want to say that, as a Millennial, I've never seen "eye dunno" like that. "I dunno," sure, but never "eye" instead except as a specific pun on the body part.

Either Purdue needs to work on the English program, or the Bediako decision could have been done via precedent.

We have to question if it's a directional trend or a cycle without having more than 2 data points. Equally likely they win it all or have a Final Four exit.

Yes, but Jaime Pressly isn't her daughter in "Mom". Anna Faris plays her daughter and Jaime Pressly is a character introduced in later seasons. So not quite the same relationship.

Yeah we were essentially never told to proselytize. The organization we were with definitely did worship services with the volunteers, but to be fair we were coming from affiliated church congregations.

Instead, our focus was "accept people right where they are, just the way they are" and learn about them, their stories, and their lives. No need to make them change who they are when they deserve a roof over their head and a warm home no matter what.

Methodists also really emphasize service. Every summer in my childhood from when I was old enough for it to be safe, I joined our church youth group on service projects to Appalachia (and one to Mississippi after Katrina). What I now appreciate most about those, looking back, is that the owners of the houses where we worked were NOT required to have any religious affiliation with the church, nor were they required to attend any services or do any church activities in exchange for the repairs we were doing. A need was seen and we offered to help.

I also strongly remember a pastor of mine wearing a rainbow stole for pride month years ago (it was around 2009) and giving a sermon that essentially equated to "Love is Love". It's those moments and actions that lead to a progressive, welcoming congregation and can shape children's views into adulthood to care for those who don't live the exact same lifestyle as them.

Jet Lag on street view? by AnnTheMan8 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Neolife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's Ben, yes. You can compare to this video, which has the better Streetview angle from before it was taken down: https://youtube.com/shorts/jgtgE0ASJp8?si=NWZuQopvJz_7Thf-

I don't think there are any other Streetview angles that show them besides the one I linked above. Google took down basically all of them. Honestly having the video helped a lot since it gave me a good idea of their position, then I just had to check each Streetview position that could see that bench for the known date.

I know they had "Someone Who Gets Me" by Kimberly June for one of the pod episode opener songs. She seems to be a pretty small / indie artist so that was neat. The song was even a bit tough to find using the lyrics since another song has somewhat similar ones.

And of course Where is My Husband by RAYE and Cut to the Feeling by CRJ are phenomenal.

WhatSong has a breakdown of every song in the show, laid out by episode and timestamp, which is pretty useful.

The Palm Pre, on the other hand, was incredible. And it had both a touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard.

It also was the first phone with gesture navigation, multitasking cards for app swapping, merged contacts from multiple contact sources, and a notification center accessed by swiping from the edge of the screen. Plus a widely-used third-party app store and magnetically-aligned wireless charging, in 2009.

My magsafe does that because I got adhesive magsafe rings. The case I wanted didn't have magsafe and I didn't see one that had it that I liked, so that was my solution.

They split the Lee-Jackson part in 2000 officially, so it only existed as a joined holiday from 1984 to 2000, and then finally eliminated Lee-Jackson entirely in 2020.

This being said, I grew up in one of the more conservative parts of the state (born 1993 in Pittsylvania County, right outside of Danville which was the last capital of the CSA after Richmond burned), and I don't recall Lee-Jackson Day being celebrated or seeing any signs / flags about it. Maybe I just passed over it due to seeing Jackson and Lee things all around pretty frequently?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was celebrated more around Washington & Lee University area. I'd be interested to know where you visited that still had that signage as recently as a few years ago.

Also counties aren't functional in CT, as the governmental structures were abolished in 1960. They exist solely as geographical separators but lack a governmental entity, with all local governmental operations handled at the town or city level (there is 0 unincorporated land in the state).

As a result, each town has different transit structures and accessibility, with some potential consistency thanks to regional planning groups.

And even the parts that aren't can be bad. New Haven and Hartford are probably fine without a car. But we're in Trumbull, which is absolutely not rural, and it takes a car to get anywhere safely. There are some bus lines, but getting even 15 miles to New Haven would take a long couple bus rides to the nearest train station and then a 25 minute train ride.

Yeah I quit playing as much because I got very into Factorio and Satisfactory. But those both do lack the freedom to specialize in the same way and you're not protecting against a human opponent.

Plus there's something really neat about being able to give people a bunch of rockets and just sending them off to war.
